Thanks to the Internet, many aspects of our lives have been made for the better. Ask any of your friends what they’ve learned from being confined at home for the past few months and they’ll say it has something to do with picking up new skills. While movement restrictions are easing and some of us have gone back to our normal routines, learning shouldn’t stop. Here are some free online courses that you can participate in for days when you’re staying home.

For professional certificates

If you’re looking to improve your professional skills, look no further than this opportunity. The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has partnered with the global online learning platform, Coursera, to provide 3,800 online courses for free to unemployed Malaysians. Through this initiative, you can take part in various courses such as Google IT Automation with Python, SAS Programmer, and Intel Introduction to Deep Learning. All you need to do is to register at MDEC’s Let’s Learn Digital website by 5.00pm, 30 September 2020. The courses are available until 31 December 2020. Once registered, you have access to 3,800 courses until the end of the year for free!

Learn to code

Always wanted to learn software development but don’t know where to start? Codecademy is your best friend. The platform offers courses in areas such as computer science, web development, mobile development, game development, and data science. If you’re worried it might be too heavy, fret not, as it has a series of mini-lessons to complete courses in HTML, JavaScript and more. There are also free interactive lessons and daily practices that you can enjoy.

Find the artist in you

Want to develop art skills and knowledge? Partnering with Coursera, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is offering a wide range of free online courses dedicated to the arts. There are many different courses available, which include, “Fashion as design,” “Seeing through photography,” “In the studio: abstract post-war painting,” “Modern art and ideas,” and “What is contemporary art?”. These courses look to develop your photography skills as well as honing your knowledge in modern and contemporary art.

Explore space

Have you always been interested in space? Well, here’s your chance to learn more about NASA where you can explore the agency’s massive database of educational materials. You can also join virtual and augmented reality technology tours of the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station. If not you, your kids would certainly enjoy this!

Learn photography

Improve your photography skills beyond Instagram with Leica, Olympus and Nikon’s free online courses and talks. “Home with Olympus Sessions” connects you with technical experts in either a one-on-one or group session to talk about everything photography, while Leica offers online talks with photographers, actors and musicians. If you’re thinking to get serious, Nikon is offering free online photography classes with a total of 10 lessons.
