The United Kingdom is one of the most sought-after travel destinations for Malaysians — from the iconic landmarks of London like Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London, to the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds, the dramatic Scottish Highlands, the literary heritage of Stratford-upon-Avon, and the vibrant culture of Edinburgh and Manchester. The great news is that Malaysians have long been able to visit the UK without a traditional visa for short stays — and as of January 2025, a new streamlined system called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) has been introduced to make travel even more straightforward. Book your flights to the UK, find the best hotels in London and beyond, and plan your perfect British adventure with traveloka!

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel permission introduced by the UK government as part of its effort to modernise border security. It is similar in concept to the US ESTA or Australia's ETA system. From 8 January 2025, all Malaysian passport holders travelling to the UK for a short stay are required to obtain a UK ETA before boarding their flight, even though Malaysians do not need a traditional UK visa for tourist or short business visits. The ETA is not a visa — it is a digital authorisation linked electronically to your passport. Once granted, it allows multiple entries into the UK over a period of two years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first), with each stay permitted for up to six months at a time. There is no stamp in your passport; the authorisation is entirely digital and checked automatically when you travel.
The UK ETA permits short-term visits for tourism and leisure, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings and conferences (not working for a UK employer), short courses of study up to six months, and transit through the UK to another destination. What you cannot do on a UK ETA includes working for a UK company or as a self-employed person (even unpaid work is not permitted), studying for more than six months, or living in the UK through repeated successive visits designed to circumvent immigration rules. Every time you enter the UK your arrival and exit are recorded — if it appears you are using frequent short visits to effectively live in the UK, you can be refused entry.
The application process is straightforward and can be completed in a matter of minutes.
There is no physical ETA to print; it is automatically linked to your passport and verified by airlines when you check in and by UK Border Force upon arrival. If your ETA application is rejected, you may need to apply for a standard UK Standard Visitor Visa instead, which involves a more comprehensive application process including biometric submission at a Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in Kuala Lumpur.
For most Malaysian travellers visiting the UK for tourism, family visits, or short business trips, the UK ETA is all that is needed. It is faster, cheaper, and entirely online compared to the traditional Standard Visitor Visa which costs £115, requires biometric submission at a VFS centre, and takes approximately three weeks to process. The Standard Visitor Visa is only necessary if your ETA application is refused, if you are visiting for purposes beyond what the ETA permits (such as extended study or specific medical treatments), or if you have a complex immigration history that warrants additional documentation.
