Redang Airport (IATA code RDN, ICAO WMPR) is the small airstrip on Redang Island, off the coast of Terengganu on the east side of Peninsular Malaysia. The island falls under the Kuala Nerus district. Malaysia Airports runs the airport as a STOLport, a short take-off and landing strip with one small terminal.
There are no scheduled passenger flights at Redang Airport. Most visitors fly into Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu, travel by road to Merang jetty and cross to the island by boat.
No regular airline timetable serves Redang Airport. The flights that do use the strip are charters linked to the island's resorts rather than public scheduled services. For most trips, the practical route is a flight to Kuala Terengganu and a boat across.
The airstrip stays open. Malaysia Airports keeps small STOLports like Redang running on a corporate-responsibility basis, so island communities keep a connection by air.
Redang Airport is on Redang Island itself, in the Kuala Nerus district of Terengganu. The runway is short and lies between two ridges. Aircraft approaching from the south come in over the South China Sea.
People look the airport up under a few names: Redang Airport, Redang Island Airport, Pulau Redang Airport or RDN. Malaysia Airports lists it as Redang STOLport. Every one of these refers to the same airstrip on the island.
Sultan Mahmud Airport serves Kuala Terengganu and is the closest airport with scheduled flights, about 40 to 45 km from Redang Airport in a straight line across the sea. From the airport, a road transfer takes you to Merang jetty, north of Kuala Terengganu, where boats leave for Redang Island.
Boats to Redang leave from two jetties. Merang jetty is the one most visitors use after landing at Kuala Terengganu. Shahbandar jetty, in Kuala Terengganu itself, is the other departure point.
The boats are run by the island resorts, so your crossing is usually arranged together with your stay. Each resort keeps its own boat schedule, and times can shift with the tide, the sea and the weather. Confirm the boat time with your resort before you choose a flight into TGG, and allow for the road transfer to the jetty.
Season matters more than anything else on Redang. During the northeast monsoon, most resorts on the island close for a few months around the turn of the year and boat services are cut right back. Plan your trip for the drier months outside the monsoon, and check that your resort is open for your dates before you book anything else.
