Jan 29, 2019 - Backpacking
We were originally booked at the Hong Kong Premium Guest House in the Mirador Mansion however, upon check-in, the receptionist told us that someone will accompany us to our room in the other building which is located in the Chungking Mansions. The Arab guy did not explain why, he just turned us over to a Pinay housekeeper. Good points are, the room was neat and clean, there's a TV and AC and 2 beds. There are Microwave oven and electric kettle outside the room and a water dispenser which was not regularly re-filled with water. Basically, the room is okay for the 2 of us since we didn't stay there the whole time. Bad points are: (1) the building itself is not okay. The elevator was so slow and it fits like 5-7persons only. There are lots of Pakistani, Nepali, Arabs, African in the area selling different things which I didn't expect. I was expecting for a "hotel" not a "tenement". Some of them look at us every time we pass by and/or waiting outside the elevator. During midnight, their trolleys make noises. They are shouting at 2am, not sure if they were up to fight or something. That was terrible and scary. (2) Front desk is far since, again, it is located in the Mirador Mansions. The phone outside our room is not working and we cannot call someone if we need something. Even the vault and telephone inside the room are not working. (3) The housekeeper is entering our room without our permission. We stayed there for 3 nights and I noticed that everyday as we come back from our tour, the garbage bin is already empty, blankets are fixed and there are new bath towels prepared. Well, it was actually a good point that they keep the room clean BUT I don't agree with that. We're not assured of the safety of our valuables and we are not assured of our safety as well. Having that kind of ambiance, I can't easily trust the people. They might put something inside the room or inside our bag that can place us in danger or something. We might not now if they put a hidden camera (or if there's a hidden camera) inside our room. Chungking Mansions for me is dodgy so I really can't trust people right away. Btw, outside this "mansion", there's a store that sells different porn DVDs and paraphernalia which adds up to my discomfort. For me, staying in this kind of guesthouse is a big no-no. I'm up to an adventure but I still want to feel safe.
