Has a library that boasts an impressive collection of new and old manga. Guests can borrow up to 10 books at a time. Almost all the manga are in Japanese. If you do not know Japanese or not learning Japanese, I feel this is a completely missed opportunity. Breakfast is a Japanese bento box with miso soup. The breakfast is very healthy containing a hodgepodge of rice and pickled vegetables. The breakfast is low on meat, usually it's a single meatball and a slice of cooked fish. The hotel room is tiny, so people who are taller than 6 ft or have a lot of luggage might find it difficult to navigate. The beds here are EXTREMELY firm. I like sleeping on firm beds so it was not a problem for me. Also did not like the position of the air condition which blows directly towards the bed. I had to turn if off to avoid freezing while asleep. To rooftop space is small and not very practical for reading. It gets very sunny up there and there is no shade. Hotel has definitely seen some better days, noticed the ceiling of my room had cracks and there is a noticeable stink when the staff are cleaning the rooms.

I stayed here a few nights in April 2025. I had a generally positive experience as the room was clean and orderly and everything functioned well. It was definitely value for money. Only caveat was it was particularly hot while I was staying there so had to keep the blinds down in my room during my stay and sometimes the wifi wouldn't work very well. The free breakfast was fine, but might need to let them know you are vegetarian beforehand as I only really had the miso soup at breakfast.

Got the corner window room which was a very lucky thing for me since it seems to be always sold out. While the room is quite small, as to be expected with a lot of hotels in Japan, it is in a very good location next to Nijo Castle and Sanjo Shotengai. Not sure why this hotel charged me more tourist tax than my other stays in Kansai but it wasn't too much. Was also a great location for local bike rental drop off but be noted that the bicycle parking is in back and has no camera. Would like to return here on future trips to Kyoto. Try Gomaya Crepe-Do at the nearby shotengai for made to order sesame crepes. Very delicious!

For our first time in Kyoto, we decided to stay at the Hedistar Hotel as a cheaper alternative for one of the legs of our Japan trip. Having an evening check-in, our luggage delivered through their transport service was present when we arrived. The hotel’s lobby includes bookshelves of Japanese manga which also included an English section free for guests to borrow during their stay. Although at a good price, the beds were not as comfortable and unfortunately, the rooms were a bit small for two people’s worth of luggage. I also wished there were more pillows, but I’m sure can be requested if necessary. The shower heads also are also angled out of place, so showering was difficult to manage in preventing water from spilling out of the tub. All hygiene amenities were offered for free in the lobby for guests to take for their convenience. Luckily, there was also a FamilyMart right next door where we were able to grab quick snacks to eat. Restaurants were also within walking distance. When it was time to travel to our next hotel, we experienced difficulty with language barrier when trying to transport our luggage through their service. CASH ONLY for luggage service! Luckily, we were able to find an ATM in the FamilyMart next door. Despite difficulty, they still tried their best to communicate their policies through Google translate which was extremely helpful in figuring out how much to pay. Overall, it was an okay stay for the price.
