Rantau Panjang is a town and an area in Kelantan, Malaysia. It is one of the first border towns between Malaysia and Thailand in the West Coast of Malaysia. Rantau Panjang itself is situated around 40 kilometres from Kota Bharu which is the capital city of Kelantan. It is the major border crossing between Malaysia and Thailand for the East Coast of Malaysia. The town on the Thai side across the Golok River which forms the boundary between the two countries is Sungai Kolok. Rantau Panjang and Sungai Kolok are connected by the Rantau Panjang–Sungai Kolok Bridge, or more popularly known as the ‘Harmony Bridge’, which reaches across Sungai Golok. The town is known for having a duty-free shopping area where you can find electronic goods, cigarettes and clothes.

How to Get There

You can reach Rantau Panjang from Thailand. Rantau Panjang is a major road crossing between Malaysia and Thailand. There is a bridge links Rantau Panjang and Sungai Kolok. The Malaysian immigration is right in the middle of town just before the bridge. Most people without their own transport can walk across the border.

By Plane

There are flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Kota Bharu Airport which usually takes around an hour. From the airport, you can reach Rantau Panjang by driving or take a taxi and the duration takes another hour.

By Car

There is a road between Kota Bharu and Rantau Panjang which is via Pasir Mas where you can reach by driving or by taxi. It usually takes around 6 hours and 15 minutes depends on traffic. Bus No. 29 runs between Rantau Panjang and Kota Bharu every half hour and go via Pasir Mas. The journey takes about an hour.

Pantai Sri Tujoh

It is a magnificient beach situated in the district of Tumpat in Kelantan. It is situated near the Thailand-Kelantan border in Kampung Tujoh which is 7 kilometres away from Kota Bharu town. Visitors of the beach are able to take part in activities such as picnicking, water sports, and even through simply appreciating the beautiful natural landscapes. Visitors can also witness the scenes of fishermen’s boats making their way in and out of the sea with their catch of the day.

Siti Khadijah Market

Siti Khadijah Market or Pasar besar Siti Khadijah is the biggest local wet market in Kelantan and 20 minutes away from Rantau Panjang area. Its name is taken after Prophet Muhammad's wife, whom is known for her entrepreneurial skill which shows this market is mostly run by women. Many fresh produce available here such as seafood, vegetables and wide variety of fruits and you can also find ready-to eat food like 'ayam percik', nasi ulam and a variety of noodle soups, all unique in flavors and taste of Kelantan. There are also desserts like 'kuih muih' ,tempeh and hot milk tea, which is the staple drink for Kelantanese.

Kelantan is known for its monsoon weather at the end of the year specifically around November and December. Therefore, visitors are advised to be aware of the weather and avoid areas that are prone to flooding.
