Pasir Puteh is a town in Kelantan, Malaysia. The location of Pasir Puteh is situated on the bank of Semerak River which is about 30 kilometres to the south of Kota Bharu. Pasir Puteh also located near to the borderline of Kelantan and Terengganu.

According to the history, Pasir Puteh was derived after the Sultan Muhammad IV had visited the place, which was known as Pangkalan Limbungan. He, then saw the shining white sand along the riverbanks and was impressed with it. In 1911, the Sultan had declared the place, as known in current name as Pasir Puteh.

Pasir Puteh is measured for 167.2 square stone. It has 8 districts which are Padang Pak Amat, Bukit Abal, Bukit Awang, Bukit Jawa, Gong Datuk, Jeram, Limbongan dan Semerak.

Most of the locals in Pasir Puteh speak their national language with their east coast dialect. Malaysians called it as Kelantan dialect. It is different from Terengganu dialect. Kelantanese dialect is influenced by Thai language as Kelantan’s neighbouring country is Southern Thailand. This dialect is vastly known in Malaysia and known for its uniqueness.

By Plane

There are flights to Kota Bharu provided by Firefly, Malindo Air and Air Asia. From the airport, guests could take a taxi to Pasir Puteh which would take around 56 minutes of journey.

By Car

Getting to Pasir Puteh from Kuala Lumpur could consider driving along the East Coast Highway 1 and 2 through Karak Highway. Soon reaching at Jabor Tol Plaza, take on the directions to Gemuruh in Kuala Terengganu and may straight ahead go on to Pasir Puteh with the direction to Kelantan. This route will take on estimation of 5 hours 57 minutes of journey.

There are also bus companies which take passengers to Pasir Puteh using the same land route which are; Queen Express, Perdana Express and Express Mutiara.

When in Pasir Puteh, there are also other mode of transportations to choose from which are; chartered buses and taxis.

As Pasir Puteh’s locals are mostly fisherman, there is a place where travellers can actually go fishing in Wakaf Bunut, Selising. It was started as a Royal Project by the Kelantan Royalty where they are trying to improvise the economy of the fisherman villagers of the area. Varieties of freshwater fishes that can be found are catfish, tilapia and many more.

There is a local night market that usually opens in every Thursday and Saturday nights. The location also depends on the day itself. Thursday night market is held at Tok Bali area while on Saturday nights, the market is open at Pasir Puteh’s central town. These places offers variety of delicacies ranging from the local known food and courses which will satisfy food cravers’ needs.

When in Kelantan, the must-try food ingredient is budu. It is widely known that Budu originated from Kelantan. It is a fermented fish sauce where it is best to eat with plain white rice as what the locals always do. Budu is used in many of Kelantan cuisine such as Nasi Kerabu. Nasi Kerabu is a combination of blue-coloured rice along with the side dishes such as fried fish or beef, budu, ‘ulam’ or fresh local vegetables, fried shredded coconut and salted egg. You can find this anywhere in Kelantan including Pasir Puteh and it is a must-try dish when in Kelantan.
