Cocoa Mews is a homestay located at Little India which is right in the heart of Georgetown, Penang. It is just 5 minutes by bus from Komtar Bus Station. With its easy access to public transportation, you can save time and easily make day trips out of Penang to surrounding attractions such as Batu Ferringhi, Butterworth and other surrounding areas. The homestay is also within a 10-minute walking distance from the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and San Tong Khoo Kongsi. The homestay’s ideal location places it nearby all the amenities that a traveller could possibly need such as a convenience store, grocery store, bank, foreign exchange office, post office, bar, restaurant and visa renewal service. The rooms in Cocoa Mews are designed with a heritage feel yet equipped with modern amenities. Originally built 100 years ago, this heritage house is characterized by a combination of modern comfort and traditional element of Penang, making it a distinct accommodation.
The fastest way to reach Penang is by flight. The Penang Bayan Lepas International Airport is serviced by Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Dragonair, SilkAir AirAsia, Jetstar Airways, Tiger Airways, Firefly, China Airlines, China Southern and Qatar Airways. Direct domestic flights are available from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri, Kuantan, and Langkawi. Direct international flights are available from Hong Kong, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, Guangzhou, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Banda Aceh. If you’re travelling from Kuala Lumpur, the flight will only take less than an hour.
For those planning to drive to Penang can get on the North-South Expressway. Penang is connected to the mainland and the North-South Expressway by the Penang Bridge. As traffic is usually congested in the morning and evening, the Penang Second Bridge or Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge connecting Batu Kawan and Batu Maung has been opened in 2014. There is no toll at the Penang Bridge for vehicles heading to the mainland, but vehicles headed to the island via Penang First Bridge must pay a toll of RM7 for cars, RM12 for vans. If you’re driving to Penang from Kuala Lumpur, the journey will take approximately 4 hours.
Long distance buses in Georgetown arrive/depart at the new bus terminal at Sungai Nibong, 12km south of the city centre, and 7km from the Penang airport. Buses from Kuala Lumpur depart from the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS), takes 5 hours depending on traffic. Bus tickets from Kuala Lumpur will cost around RM 40 and can be booked online or bought at the bus terminal. Buses to/from Johor Bahru and Singapore will take around 10 hours and cost approximately RM 60 or SGD$45.
Cocoa Mews has recently renovated all their rooms and they are now equipped with air-conditioning. Guests will have the option to choose from a Deluxe room which comes with windows, queen size bed, television and DVD player, multi-purpose plug, clothes hanger and complimentary Wi-Fi or a standard room which comes with a queen size bed, television and DVD player, multi-purpose plug, air conditioner and complimentary Wi-Fi. Lastly, there is also the Superior room which comes with an attached bathroom, queen size bed, air conditioning, television and DVD player, multi-purpose plug, clothes hanger and complimentary Wi-Fi. Budget travellers also have the option of staying in a dorm room which come with 4 bunk beds, air conditioning, en-suite shower and balcony and complimentary Wi-Fi. It is important to note however that apart from the Superior room all rooms are with shared bathrooms and toilets.
The homestay has a café on site that specialises in local cuisine and serves breakfast and lunch. However, the café is mainly for guests and is not open for the public. Guests are also invited to use the pantry and help themselves to the snacks provided. Apart from that, guests can also dine at one of the many eateries that are situated nearby the homestay.
Facilities provided at the homestay include laundry service, luggage storage, tourist information counter, a free map of the city’s bus routes, a free map of the city, free Wi-Fi, transportation arrangements and toiletries. The pantry available for guests is also equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and an electric kettle.
As announced by Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Tourism Tax is imposed starting 1 January 2023 for all hotel guests that are non-Malaysian or non-permanent Residents of Malaysia. Please expect that hotel will collect the Tourism Tax from you during check-in at the hotel. The Tourism Tax rate is 10 RM per room per night.
