Your Travel Guide to Kota Kinabalu as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Kota Kinabalu from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

For most Malaysian travelers, flying is the most convenient way to reach Kota Kinabalu. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and other major hubs like Penang and Johor Bahru operate daily. Airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Malindo Air offer regular services. Flight durations are typically around 2 to 2.5 hours, with fares varying significantly based on booking time and season, often ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 400 for a round trip if you book flight tickets in advance.

Traveling by bus is a more economical option, though considerably longer. Buses depart from major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu. The journey can take upwards of 24 hours, making it suitable for those with ample time and a preference for overland travel. Ticket prices typically range from MYR 100 to MYR 150 one-way. This option allows you to see more of the Malaysian landscape.

Driving to Kota Kinabalu from Peninsular Malaysia is not a common choice due to the vast distance and the need to cross the South China Sea. However, if you are traveling from nearby regions in Sabah or Sarawak, driving is feasible. Major roads within Borneo are generally well-maintained, but it's essential to plan your route and be aware of potential road conditions, especially in more remote areas. Toll charges are applicable on certain highways.

Best Time to Visit Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and high humidity regardless of when you visit. The best time to plan your trip is generally during the dry season, which runs from March to October. During these months, you'll experience less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the natural beauty of Sabah.

The period from November to February often sees more rainfall, as it coincides with the monsoon season. While this doesn't mean constant downpours, you can expect occasional heavy showers, particularly in the afternoons. However, this period can also offer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind the possibility of rain.

Food and Dining Near Kota Kinabalu — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

No trip to Kota Kinabalu is complete without indulging in its diverse culinary offerings. A must-try is the Sabah Laksa, a distinct regional variation of the popular noodle soup, often characterized by its rich, creamy broth and unique blend of spices. You can find excellent versions at local eateries and coffee shops throughout the city.

Seafood lovers will be delighted by the fresh catches available daily. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often prepared with local herbs and spices, are a staple. Head to the waterfront or local markets for the freshest selections. Another local favorite is Hinava, a traditional Kadazan-Dusun dish of raw fish marinated in lime juice, ginger, and chili, offering a refreshing and zesty flavor profile.

For those seeking comfort food, Nasi Lemak remains a popular choice across Malaysia, and Kota Kinabalu offers its own delicious renditions, often served with spicy sambal and various accompaniments. Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread, is also widely available for breakfast or a light meal, best enjoyed with dhal or curry. These dishes are readily found in hawker centers and restaurants.

Don't forget to sample local fruits like the unique Tarap, known for its creamy texture and sweet, custard-like flavor, or the pungent but delicious Durian when in season. Exploring the local markets and food stalls is a fantastic way to experience the authentic tastes of Sabah and discover hidden culinary gems. Many of these establishments are halal-certified, catering to Muslim travelers.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Kota Kinabalu

Sabah's culture is a rich blend of indigenous traditions and influences from various ethnic groups. When visiting religious sites like mosques, it's important to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally known for their hospitality, and a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way in interactions with locals. Learning a few basic Malay phrases like "Terima Kasih" (Thank You) can be appreciated.

Kota Kinabalu is generally a safe city for tourists, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation around the city and beyond. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many establishments, including some retail outlets and toll booths. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be required for entry into certain venues or for travel, so it's good to have it installed.

Other helpful apps include Google Maps for navigation and translation apps if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English or Malay. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone will make your journey smoother and more enjoyable, allowing you to navigate Kota Kinabalu with confidence and ease.

The hotel has potential, but a few improvements would enhance the guest experience. During my stay, I noticed some dusty areas in the room, the curtain at the window was not properly secured, and a hair dryer was not provided in the room. There was also an unpleasant smell coming from the wardrobe. I hope these issues can be addressed for future guests... But the staff very friendly.

There is no air conditioning remote. Please give the wifi password at check-in time. You have to ask for it. The best area to go to Todak.

D'Borneo is a basic no frills accommodation which I mainly choose for its location.

It is a pleaseant stay. Just 2 minutes walk, I can reach Philipine Market. The room is spacious also with the bathroom. It is good place to stay for family and those who are backpackers.

1. The room size was good 2. The hotel should improve the air conditioner unit. I think they should change to new unit. My room does not have any remote control for AC. 3. Location was very good. Next to top tourist attraction for shopping 4. Parking space was very limited 5. No elevator, I need to walk up to 2nd floor with my heavy luggage.

The n housekeeping counter staff service is satisfactory. Just the room door button is less beautiful, the lost is the key. Most I like his male staff, customer-friendly fast when I need to add mineral water to coffee packs. The D Borneo Hotel ensures satisfaction.
