Your Travel Guide to Johor Bahru as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur is convenient, with several transport options available to suit different budgets and preferences. For the quickest journey, flights are available from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or klia2 to Senai International Airport (JHB) in Johor Bahru. Flight times are approximately 1 hour, and fares can range from MYR 100 to MYR 300 or more, depending on the airline and booking time. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive prices.

For a more economical option, express buses connect Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru. The bus journey takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, with ticket prices typically ranging from MYR 35 to MYR 60. This is a popular choice for many Malaysian travelers due to its affordability and the frequency of departures throughout the day.

Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru is also a viable option, covering a distance of approximately 320 kilometers. The journey is primarily via the North-South Expressway (PLUS Highway). The estimated driving time is around 3 to 4 hours, excluding stops. Toll charges can add up, with the total cost for tolls estimated to be around MYR 40 to MYR 50 one way.

Other major Malaysian cities like Penang and Ipoh also have direct bus services to Johor Bahru, offering a convenient way to reach the southern state without flying. These bus journeys will naturally be longer, often spanning 7 to 10 hours, but they provide an affordable way to travel across Peninsular Malaysia.

Best Time to Visit Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers seeking pleasant weather would be during the drier months, which generally fall between January and March, and again from June to August. During these periods, rainfall is typically lower, making it more conducive for outdoor activities and exploration.

However, it's important to note that Johor Bahru can experience rain at any time of the year due to its tropical location. The monsoon seasons, typically from November to January, can bring heavier rainfall, which might occasionally disrupt outdoor plans. Despite this, the city remains accessible, and indoor attractions are always an option.

For travelers looking to avoid crowds and potentially find better accommodation deals, visiting during the shoulder seasons or off-peak periods can be advantageous. While there isn't a drastic difference in weather, avoiding major Malaysian school holidays and public holidays can lead to a more relaxed experience and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels.

Ultimately, Johor Bahru is a year-round destination. The warm climate means you can visit anytime, and the city's attractions are always open. The key is to pack accordingly, with light clothing and an umbrella or rain jacket, regardless of the season.

Food and Dining Near Johor Bahru — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Johor Bahru is a culinary destination, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect Malaysia's multicultural heritage. A characteristic Malaysian breakfast or supper is Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with dhal (lentil curry) or other curries. You can find excellent Roti Canai at local mamak stalls, often available 24 hours a day.

No visit to Malaysia is complete without trying Nasi Lemak, the national dish. This fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf is typically served with sambal (chili paste), fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. Many restaurants and stalls offer variations, including fried chicken or rendang.

For a taste of wok-fried noodles, Char Kway Teow is a must-try. This popular dish features flat rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, cockles, bean sprouts, chives, and egg in a savory dark soy sauce. The smoky aroma and rich flavor are characteristic of a well-prepared Char Kway Teow.

Laksa, a spicy noodle soup, comes in various regional styles. Johor Bahru is known for its distinct version, often richer and thicker, sometimes incorporating ingredients like fish balls and prawns. The spicy broth is incredibly satisfying, especially on a cooler evening.

Finally, don't leave without sampling Satay. These marinated and grilled skewers of chicken, beef, or lamb are served with a peanut sauce, cucumber, and onions. The smoky, slightly sweet flavor of the meat combined with the rich peanut sauce is a delightful combination.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Johor Bahru

Understanding local customs will enhance your experience in Johor Bahru. Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, so dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques, is respectful. This means covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, and a simple "terima kasih" (thank you) goes a long way.

Safety in Johor Bahru is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

For seamless travel, having essential apps on your smartphone is highly recommended. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing services, making it easy to get around the city. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many retail outlets and for topping up toll cards. MySejahtera is the government's app for managing health and vaccination status, which may be required for entry into certain venues.

Other useful apps include local weather apps to plan your day and translation apps if you're not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia. Having these tools readily available will ensure your trip is smooth, convenient, and enjoyable, allowing you to focus on experiencing the best of Johor Bahru.

The hotel uses public parking which charges parking. Hotel staffs during checked in failed to adequately inform us on this. We were of the opinion that being a weekend there is no parking charge. Unfortunately it was not. We were slammed with a parking summon on Sat 15.9.2018 about 1015 am. When confronted why we were not alerted the hotel reception staff claimed that she had told us when we checked in. We do not even have a parking coupon since we are from outstation. And we were aslo unaware the Majlis Bandaraya charges parking on weekend. The hotel could easily purchase coupon in advance and place it on guests car and chrge back guest during check out. To us its simple matter which the hotel could have organised but miserably overlooked. Very unprofessional and guests unfriendly.

It's quite comfortable to stay at a cheap price, you can get free coffee and there's also a jug to cook hot water, if you go to Johor, you'll definitely come back again

Wrong room: booked twin bed room but given queen size bed, receptionist reply: not available. Cleanliness: dirty, floor sticky, bed sheets still can see hair, and blood stain? Toilet bowl with hair as well. Security: no secure when the door latch broken. Air conditioner too noisy. Room is not sound proof. The price with this condition, might as well stay in motel

The small room is like sitting in a dormitory, the bed doesn't itch, it's not very comfortable if you have to do it, where do you want to go? Just give up.

In my opinion it's not a hotel but a hostel. no elevator, very small rooms and no other services. I stayed 2 nights, Already asked to be cleaned it was not cleaned at all. Mineral water is only given 1 time when it comes, there is a deposit of 50 ringit. I will never want to stay at eg hotel again.
