Location and How to Get to Friendship Motel

Address and Getting There

Friendship Motel is situated at 20, Penang Street, Georgetown, Georgetown, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, 10200. This address places you right in the midst of Georgetown, a district renowned for its historical architecture, street art, and culinary scene. The neighborhood is described as being around the entertainment center, suggesting easy access to evening activities and a lively atmosphere. Being in Georgetown means you are already immersed in the cultural heart of Pulau Pinang, making exploration convenient and enjoyable.

Navigating to Friendship Motel is straightforward for most Malaysian travelers. If you are arriving by air, Penang International Airport (PEN) is about a 45-minute Grab ride away, with fares typically ranging from MYR 25 to MYR 40 depending on traffic and the specific e-hailing service.

For those coming from the mainland, driving via the Penang Bridge or the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge involves toll charges, which vary but are generally around MYR 7 to MYR 20 for standard vehicles. Public transport options within Georgetown are limited, making e-hailing services like Grab the most practical way to reach the motel from further afield or to navigate the city.

While Georgetown itself is highly walkable, understanding the broader transport network can be helpful. The nearest major public transport hubs are a considerable distance from the motel, meaning direct travel via KTM, LRT, or MRT is not feasible within Georgetown itself. However, if you are planning to book flight tickets to Penang, you will likely land at Penang International Airport, from where you can easily arrange your onward journey to the motel. Consider booking your flights in advance to secure better fares for your trip to this captivating island.

When you arrive, you'll typically need to present a valid identification document, such as your MyKad or passport, and potentially the booking confirmation. Familiarizing yourself with the check-in time beforehand helps in planning your journey to the motel, ensuring you arrive within the designated hours for a seamless process.

Should you arrive earlier than the 14:00 check-in time, it's always a good idea to inquire at the 24-hour front desk if an early check-in is possible. While not guaranteed, sometimes rooms become available sooner than expected. If an early check-in isn't feasible, the reception staff can usually store your luggage securely, allowing you to begin exploring Georgetown without being burdened by your bags. This service is particularly useful for maximizing your time in the city.

The check-out time at Friendship Motel is before 12:00 noon. This allows ample time for the housekeeping staff to prepare the rooms for incoming guests. If you have a later flight or need a bit more time in the morning, you can inquire about the possibility of a late check-out. Similar to early check-in, this is subject to availability and may incur an additional fee. If a late check-out is not possible, the motel's reception can again assist with storing your luggage, giving you the freedom to enjoy your last few hours in Pulau Pinang.

Your Travel Guide to Pulau Pinang as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with several transport options available. For the quickest journey, consider flying. Numerous airlines operate frequent flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and other hubs to Penang International Airport (PEN). Flight durations are typically around one hour, and you can often find fares ranging from MYR 100 to MYR 300 for a round trip if you book flight tickets in advance, especially during promotional periods.

Alternatively, bus travel offers a more budget-friendly option for reaching Pulau Pinang. Comfortable express buses depart regularly from Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) and other major bus terminals to Penang's Sungai Nibong bus terminal. The journey usually takes between 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Ticket prices typically range from MYR 40 to MYR 70 for a one-way trip, making it an economical choice for wallet-conscious travelers.

For those who prefer to drive, the journey from Kuala Lumpur to Penang is approximately 4 to 5 hours via the North-South Expressway. The total toll charges for a standard car can range from MYR 40 to MYR 60 for a one-way trip, depending on the exact route and vehicle class. This option provides flexibility, allowing you to stop at various points of interest along the way and explore Penang at your own pace upon arrival.

Best Time to Visit Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with warm temperatures and high humidity. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers is generally during the drier months, which typically fall between December and February, and again from June to August. During these periods, you can expect less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor exploration of Georgetown's heritage sites and beaches.

However, it's important to be aware of the monsoon seasons. The northeast monsoon from November to January can bring heavier rainfall, particularly in the mornings and evenings, while the southwest monsoon from May to September can also see intermittent showers. Despite the rain, these periods often offer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, which can be appealing for some travelers. Regardless of when you visit, always be prepared for warm weather and occasional rain.

Food and Dining Near Pulau Pinang — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Penang is a food lover's destination, and no trip is complete without indulging in its iconic dishes. Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried flat rice noodle dish with prawns, cockles, and bean sprouts, is a local favorite, known for its smoky 'wok hei' flavor. You can find excellent versions at many hawker stalls and restaurants across the island. Another must-try is Penang Laksa, a spicy and sour fish-based noodle soup that offers a unique and refreshing taste.

For breakfast or a light meal, Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with curry, is a staple. Many Indian Muslim eateries serve delicious versions. Nasi Kandar, a fragrant rice dish served with a variety of curries and side dishes, is another Penang specialty that offers a hearty and flavorful experience. Satay, grilled marinated meat skewers served with peanut sauce, is also widely available and a popular choice for a quick bite.

When seeking out these culinary delights, look for busy hawker stalls and local eateries, as this is often a sign of quality and authenticity. Many of these establishments are halal-certified, making them suitable for Muslim travelers. Exploring the diverse food scene is an integral part of the Pulau Pinang experience, offering a delicious journey through the island's rich cultural heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang is a melting pot of cultures, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan influences shaping its unique identity. When visiting religious sites like mosques or temples, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying excessive wealth.

For safety, the emergency number in Malaysia is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services. It's also advisable to have the MySejahtera app installed on your phone, which was essential during recent health protocols and remains useful for checking health advisories. For transportation, the Grab app is indispensable for booking e-hailing rides across the island, offering convenience and transparent pricing.

Other useful apps for Malaysian travelers include Touch 'n Go eWallet for seamless payments at many merchants and parking facilities, and local navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps to help you find your way around Georgetown and beyond. Familiarizing yourself with these tools will enhance your travel experience, making it easier to navigate, pay for services, and stay informed during your visit to Pulau Pinang.

The hotel is clean, the water heater is good and the water is smooth and fast. Close to the beach and Fort Wallis and close to Little India and crossed by the free CAT bus. In front of the hotel there is a nasi kandar restaurant. The fried chicken is great 👍 affordable prices. The downside of this hotel is that there is no elevator so you have to climb the stairs if you want to go to the top floor. I will come here again if I go to Penang. If you want to go to Penang Hill, you can take bus 201 from the stop in front of the park by paying 2RM.

To go to Friendship Motel, we can ride the CAT Bas from Komtar down at the Fort Cornwallis stop or Penang City Hall, then walk 20 meters to the south. This bass is free from Komtar-Jetty PP. The receptionist is a peranakan, whether it's the owner or not, but very good. I ordered for 2 people, but given a wider room for 3 people because I was a foreign tourist. The beach is only about 100 meters away, passing a beautiful park in the north and a City Hall that looks like the White House. Friendship Motel is also very strategic, close to various tourist attractions without our need to ride Penang Rapid Bas again. To go to Little India also only passes 1 block. In addition there are Street Art, Fort Cornwallis, port of Jetty, monuments of peace, and much more.

Old hotel, simple and quite clean. Just be careful going up and down the stairs carrying your suitcase.

Basic accommodation, clean. But check in time is 4 PM! When I came at 2:20 PM, the receptionist said 4 PM then I needed to sit at the lobby for nearly 2 hours.

The bathroom has no hangers so you have to find your own way to place the clothes where.

The waiter is friendly, for cheap lodging prices, according to the facilities offered. Strategic location because it is close to other tourist attractions.
