The Mandurah Hotel is among the limited, and yet best choices, located along the stretch of the beautiful Pantai Balok, Kuantan, Pahang. Pantai Balok, more popular among the locals, is a scenic beach that is completed with white sandy beach, clear azure waters of the South China Sea. There are fewer tourists at Pantai Balok compared to the Pantai Teluk Cempedak, which also means there are a limited number of hotels available in the area. Mandurah Hotel is a rather new hotel in the area. This hotel has 60 rooms, offering such luxurious resort accommodation and yet still at the affordable price. The Mandurah Hotel is built in modern architecture while integrating the traditional concepts.

Your Travel Guide to Kuantan as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Kuantan from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Kuantan from Kuala Lumpur is a common route for many Malaysians. The quickest way is by air; flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport (KUA) are frequent, with fares often ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 300 depending on the airline and booking time. The flight duration is approximately 45 minutes. You can book flight tickets easily on Traveloka.

For those who prefer road travel, driving from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan takes about 3.5 to 4 hours via the Kuantan-Kuala Lumpur Highway. Toll fees are estimated to be around MYR 30-40 each way. Alternatively, numerous bus companies operate daily services from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan Sentral. Bus tickets typically cost between MYR 35 and MYR 50, with the journey taking around 4 to 5 hours.

From other major Malaysian cities like Johor Bahru or Penang, flying into Kuantan is often the most time-efficient option, though direct flights might be less frequent, potentially requiring a layover in Kuala Lumpur. Bus services are also available but involve longer travel times. Planning your journey in advance can help secure better prices for both flights and bus tickets.

Best Time to Visit Kuantan

Kuantan enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it's warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Malaysian travelers is generally between March and September. During these months, the weather is typically drier, with more sunshine, making it ideal for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities that Kuantan offers.

The monsoon season usually occurs from November to February, bringing heavier rainfall and rougher seas. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can limit beach activities and outdoor excursions. If you plan to visit during the monsoon, be prepared for intermittent rain showers and check weather forecasts regularly.

Shoulder seasons, like October, can offer a good balance, with fewer crowds than the peak summer months but still relatively pleasant weather. Regardless of when you visit, Kuantan’s natural beauty and cultural attractions are accessible, though planning your itinerary around the weather will enhance your experience.

Food and Dining Near Kuantan — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Kuantan is a culinary delight, offering a taste of authentic Pahang cuisine and Malaysian favorites. No visit is complete without trying Nasi Lemak, the national dish, often served with spicy sambal, fried anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg. You can find excellent versions at local eateries and even some hotel breakfast spreads.

Another must-try is Ikan Bakar (grilled fish), a specialty along the coast. Freshly caught fish are marinated in a blend of spices and grilled to perfection, often served with a side of sambal belacan. Many seafood restaurants along the beaches offer this delicious dish. For a quick and satisfying meal, Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread served with curry, is a breakfast and supper staple found everywhere.

Don't miss out on Laksa Pahang, a distinct regional variation of the popular noodle soup, characterized by its rich, savory broth. You can also indulge in Satay, marinated grilled skewers of chicken or beef, served with a peanut sauce. These dishes represent the diverse flavors of Malaysia and are readily available in Kuantan, often in halal-certified establishments.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Kuantan

Pahang, like much of Malaysia, has a culture that is a blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. When visiting religious sites such as mosques or temples, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, and learning a few basic Malay phrases like "Terima kasih" (thank you) can be appreciated.

Safety in Kuantan is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying excessive wealth. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999. It's always a good idea to have your hotel's contact information readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading essential Malaysian apps. Grab is indispensable for e-hailing services, making it easy to get around Kuantan. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for various payments, including tolls and at many retail outlets. MySejahtera, the government's health app, may still be relevant for checking entry requirements or health advisories.

This is a very potential hotel in a good location. However, they need to improve in hygiene especially during current endemic. Still can see the dusk on the bedside table, and the carpet at the walkway and the chairs at the lobby seems dusty too. Suggestion: Put more light around the hotel, you will miss the hotel sign board if not using GPS. Put more hanger or hook in the toilet and outside the wardrobe. Hope they can improve further to become a better hotel.

On 02.02.2022, I have requested for the staff to do room cleaning before I go out in the morning, but the bedsheets was still dirty. The ceiling was dirty, probably left over after an event. But the worse part after I check in, on 01.02.2022 around 5pm I was told that my room probably have no water, as the water tank was empty. Positively I thought it was only one hour or so, but shockingly it was up to 10PM. My families were so tired from our road trip and yet, there were no water at all. Instead of just feeling tired, we felt stress as well. Up till 10PM no solution were given to us, not even extra water was send to our room for toilet purposes. I did not pay this amount to be treated like a 1 star hotel. Even a 1 star hotel treats me better.

The hotel is not too busy hence is a good getaway far from the city. The beds are clean and comfy. There is a small gap in the bathroom door that needs to be fixed and maybe needs to put two air conditioner units for a family suite where we stayed- pretty hot and we had to turn the AC on for a while to cool down the whole room. Other than that it is a good place to unwind.

Keseluruhan keadaan bilik adalah baik dan selesa. Sarapan pagi berpatutan dan sesuai dengan selera tempatan. Kedudukan hotel sangat berhampiran dengan pantai.

It was a wonderful experience. I have always stayed in hotels like holiday villa, swiss garden, and others but this boutique hotel deserve much more credit than it gets. Love the view from our room. Amazing bar space outside the hotel. Near by all restaurants within 300mtrs. Breakfast was good enough for a boutique hotel. plenty of parking space. near by the city.

We booked family suite and it facing the beach. Superb view especially sunrise. The room and bathroom also huge. Lots of famous local eateries nearby like mee calong, roti bakar meleleh, keropok lekor etc. Nice place to relax.
