Being on a unesco world heritage site, I loved their use of Old colonial furniture and fixtures. Staff were great. Very friendly. Great breakfast. Right in the middle of old town Georgetown. Close to the free CAT shuttle bus. The Red Village market a perfect place for great reasonably priced dinner. Would stay there again

Your Travel Guide to Pulau Pinang as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Pulau Pinang from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with several transport options available. For the quickest journey, flying is recommended. Numerous daily flights operate between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Penang International Airport (PEN). Fares can range from MYR 150 to MYR 400 or more, depending on the airline and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately one hour.

Alternatively, bus travel offers a more budget-friendly option. Buses depart regularly from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to Penang's Sungai Nibong bus terminal. The journey typically takes about five to six hours, with ticket prices ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 70. This is a good choice for travelers who prefer to see the Malaysian landscape unfold.

Driving is also a popular choice for those who enjoy road trips. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Penang is around 400 kilometers and takes approximately four to five hours via the North-South Expressway. Toll charges can add up, typically ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 60 for a one-way trip, depending on your vehicle. This offers flexibility for exploring Penang at your own pace.

Best Time to Visit Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning it's warm and humid regardless of when you visit. However, the best time to plan your trip is generally between December and February. During these months, the weather tends to be drier with less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the heritage sites, beaches, and enjoying outdoor activities without frequent interruptions.

The period from March to October can be quite hot and humid, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, especially during the monsoon seasons. While these showers are usually brief, they can impact outdoor plans. The shoulder months, like November, can also be a good time to visit, potentially offering fewer crowds and slightly lower accommodation prices, though there's a higher chance of rain.

Food and Dining Near Pulau Pinang — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Penang is a food lover's destination, and no trip is complete without indulging in its iconic dishes. Nasi Lemak, Malaysia's national dish, is a fragrant coconut rice served with spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg. While available everywhere, Penang offers its unique take, often with richer sambal.

Char Kway Teow is another must-try. This stir-fried flat rice noodle dish is cooked over high heat with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, and chives, giving it a distinct smoky flavor. Look for stalls that use charcoal fire for the most authentic taste. Penang Laksa, particularly Assam Laksa, is a sour and spicy fish-based noodle soup that is a true Penang specialty, offering a complex and refreshing flavor profile.

For a lighter bite or breakfast, Roti Canai is a flaky flatbread served with curry. It's a staple in Malaysian cuisine, and Penang offers excellent versions. Finally, don't forget Satay – grilled skewers of marinated meat (chicken or beef) served with a peanut sauce. These dishes represent the diverse culinary heritage of Penang and are readily available at hawker centers and restaurants across the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Pulau Pinang

Penang is a melting pot of cultures, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan influences evident in its traditions, festivals, and daily life. When visiting religious sites like temples or mosques, it's respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, so engaging with locals can enrich your experience.

Safety in Penang is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. In case of emergencies, the national emergency number is 999.

To navigate and enhance your trip, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation. Touch 'n Go eWallet is useful for cashless payments at many establishments and for toll payments. MySejahtera, the government's contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking in at certain venues. Having these apps on your smartphone will make your journey smoother.

Rooms are beautifully and interestingly decorated and furnished, I think in the style of a well heeled Chinese family of a bygone era. Both rooms 8 and 9 are huge, especially 9. We were quickly offered a change to room 9 because the air conditioning unit in room 8 needed attention. Breakfast was à la carte, well cooked and sufficient.

To rate this hotel 4 stars is likely calling Donald Trump a Rhodes Scholar. Old, outdated, marginally clean, the bathroom of a hostel at best. The best I can say is that the attached cafe is pretty good. Very poor value for the money.

It's a beautiful old place and an amazing room - not sure I've ever had a three-piece suite in a room before - but then you notice that there are wooden shutters closed tight over all the main windows so it's pretty gloomy without the lights on. But then in the morning you realise that the transom windows let in the morning light, so you're waking up then whether you wanted to or not. I also didn't like that the door bolted from the outside, or that the cleaners sometimes only used that and not the key, so anyone could have come in when I was out. It's also noisy - a local bar or club till late and you can also hear other guests in nearby rooms.

The hotel is split between two (perhaps more) buildings - the main one and an additional one across the road. I’m not sure if this determines the overall experience. We were upstairs across the road and it felt like taking advantage of a heritage building without much other effort. The room itself was very spacious but the furniture certainly wasn’t period rather a mix of very tatty old items and current furniture. There were two beds jammed together. Neither was big enough for two but each was enormous for one person so we were miles apart. The beds were hard. The shower was good. Was it value for money - I personally don’t think so. Too many other places to stay so don’t think we will be back here.

It was very noisy all night. Our room was next to the cleaning room. Breakfast was limited and the service was very slow and our order was wrong. The room was lovely
