On March 22, 1929, at his grandmother’s house, 40A Counter Hall Road, in Penang, Malaysia P Ramlee was born. Little did the budding island of Penang know that a world-renowned entertainer had been born. His name, Teuku Nyak Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh, was given by his parents Lho’ Seumawe of Acheh, Indonesia and his mother Che Mah bt Hussein of Butterworth, Malaysia. On August 30, 1983, Counter Hall Road was renamed Jalan P Ramlee in honour of its celebrated resident. P Ramlee’s grandmother house can still be visited today. Neighbouring the house, one can find the P Ramlee Gallery which opened its doors on December 13, 1991, and houses many of his childhood relics in their original condition, including his bicycle, instruments, clothes, and much more. Many photographs, posters, and movies are displayed. As on journey’s through the gallery, P Ramlee’s life with come alive as you see the innermost workings of his childhood and adult life including pictures of his family and friends. Furthermore. Souvenirs are available, and admission is free. The hours of operation are Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, then re-open at 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The P Ramlee Gallery will be closed on Monday except for public and school holidays.
