I only want to focus to one thing, food is truly awesome!!! you have a great chef that you really need to take care. The taste of food is really like mom's cook. perfect! I tasted the roti jala and the curry, roti jala was very smooth and curry are just nice! The mee curry is the best in town! Other kinds of food are also very tasty. Great job master chef, you really make me change my perception on lower star rating hotel food. I'm a traveler and I could proudly say that the taste of your cooking is much too better than some 4-5 star hotels!

Pleasant stay
I had a quite good stay for 2 nights here at Sumai while on a business trip. I got a studio room which was quite big as I was staying alone. There were a separate living area and a room and each of them had their individual flat screen TV and aircond. I was quite surprised as I never got to stay in such room before. The living area has a comfortable sofa bed and facing the seaview. The bed was comfortable and I like the dark ambience that made me slept soundly each nights. Room service was good and satisfying which I ended up ordering them for my lunch and dinner. Buffet breakfast was quite OK which served local Malaysian breakfast and also some English breakfast. Lunch & dinner buffet however was very satisfying with lots of choices. I would definitely stay here again for my next leisure trips in Terengganu.

Bad experience
I booked this place purely because it was one of the highest rated on agoda.com but seriously I have no idea how can anyone give it more than a star. Traveled with family and booked standard apartments with 2 rooms. Few points: 1. On the first day we complained about the non functioning key room 3 times, had to go down to reception 3 times, lost my patience at the 3rd time then only staff called the maintainance to fix the room. The next day same thing happened! 2. Standard apartment was too basic for a supposed service apartment. They only provided a boiler and 4 cups. No cutleries, no plates, no oven, no dish soap. 3. Tired furnitures. The sofa are so worn out. Beds are average. 4. No wifi. I seriously regret did not book a homestay instead, with better value for money with better amenities. Really disappointed. Location near the beach is just a minimal value. I won't recommend to anyone to stay here, or least shouldn't be your first or second or third choice to stay.

You be the judge yourself.
The good part first, the people of the hotel were very polite and nice. The food was great but there's no buffet for breakfast as they did a la carte for the mains. Maybe there'll be buffet during peak season. Regardless, the food was good. Being a typical Malaysian myself, food outweighed almost everything. Here's where the complaints started. There were 4 of us and we paid for the two bedroom apartment. The apartment was spacious enough but quite rundown. Not enough power sockets in the whole apartment and there's only one in my room which was quite far from the bed. But the hotel's management was kind enough to lend us an extension. Also the bed's headboard was broken and made noises. Mind you, eventhough it's an apartment, you're not allowed to cook inside the apartment. Anyway, the internet connection was really unstable. There was no connection in my room and when I asked them regarding this matter, the technician explained to me that "It's just how it is." Basically you'll have to depend on your luck to get a good internet connection. But our room was right in front of the router! Not enough with the internet, we requested for 2 access cards and almost every time the cards were faulty and we had to go to the lobby again to get the cards fix. And every single time, the receptionists would asked if we had two cards. Not that the question was matter but every single time for 4 days? Seriously? And just to put this out there, the hotel wasn't exactly next to the beach but it only took about 5 minutes walk. So it wasn't that bad/far. Seriously, please invest some money to get better internet provider or at least put some effort to widen the internet coverage. Some maintenance on the hotel's rooms conditions would be amazing and the swimming pool smelled really bad which could used some cleaning.

No.
I stayed at Sumai Hotel Apartment over the Labour Day weekend. It was a quick getaway with my cousin and her family of four. We booked the two-bedroom apartment and thought what a great deal we got for the period. It wasn't great. We arrived at about 6 p.m. and although front desk was attentive and friendly, my husband suspected all the good apartments were already handed out earlier. Our unit was on the second floor. We were surprised to find that the apartment did not have ceiling fans and relied on air-conditioning. This would have been fine if they were working, which they weren't. The a/c units were all dusty, dirty and the one in the smaller room had seen better days, definitely. The lights were poor, only white fluorescent bulbs in the dining/living area and the bedroom lights were yellow bulbs. The smaller room had two single beds pushed together and a wall fitting for clothes was at a bad angle, making the room even smaller. The bigger room wasn't all jazz either with mismatching furniture and drab curtains. To top it all off, the hotel failed my pillow test. No one came up at all to give us extra pillows, not after we called, and certainly not until checking out either. It wasn't a nice stay for us, even if we were only going to be in the unit for sleep and washing up. The kitchen sink looked as if it was built by a teenager and the cleanliness of the entire unit was nothing to be proud of. The second bathroom had a missing shower head. The water pressure was non-existent. Admittedly the building is not brand new although the surrounding buildings are. (This then led to noisy motorcycles racing in the middle of the night outside our window!) Therefore the hotel management should at least try to have better maintenance and upkeep to ensure more rooms are booked. The indoor pool is better off heated; as the water is way too chilly to enjoy and kids would rather tear up the shower in their rooms anyway (and if the hot shower worked properly). Do away with the old a/c units and install fans instead. Maybe that would help out with costs. I won't be staying here again, I'm sorry, and I wouldn't be recommending Sumai to family and friends. If you are thinking of booking because of the indoor pool, stop. That's why we booked too, and we were greatly disappointed.

Average and tired looking hotel
I stayed at Sumai Hotel Apartment on 17 - 19 March. It was my second stay there: the previous visit was during the Hari Raya break. Overall, Sumai Hotel Apartment is an average and tired looking hotel/apartment that is in dire need of an upgrade. The apartments are spacious, but the fixtures in the apartment have past its replacement date. The sofa is smelly, and the tv is from 10 years ago. Even the TV connection to the few cables channels are not clear. The beds are sinking in the middle and showing sign of wear and tear, while the hot water in the shower come from standalone water heater with very low water pressure. The only positive thing about this hotel is its location. It is within walking distance to the beach and restaurants such as Manhattan Fish Market and Chicken Cottage.
