Just back from 2 weeks there. Overall pretty good, but some areas are tired. Some rooms have been refreshed but ours wasn’t one of them. Pool area needs more beds. Breakfast a little repetitive. Bar music needs more variety. Same cd every day for many days. Lounge music in evenings tooooo loud. Being a bit picky now.😄 Overall very good value.

Overview of The Magellan Sutera Resort

Set along the waterfront of Sutera Harbour in Kota Kinabalu,

The Magellan Sutera Resort

is a distinguished 5-star property that has long been regarded as one of Sabah's most prestigious seaside retreats. With 456 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, the resort occupies a prime position within the expansive Sutera Harbour development, offering guests direct access to a championship golf course, a full-service marina, and some of the most spectacular sunset views over the South China Sea. Whether you are visiting Borneo for the first time or returning for a well-deserved escape,

Magellan Sutera

delivers a refined blend of tropical luxury and warm Sabahan hospitality that is difficult to find elsewhere on the west coast.

The resort's architecture draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Sabah, and this theme extends into the interiors, where local motifs and elegant furnishings create an atmosphere that feels both grand and welcoming. Guests at

The Magellan Sutera Resort Kota Kinabalu

enjoy access to an impressive range of on-site facilities — from a dramatic free-form swimming pool with swim-up bar to the internationally renowned Mandara Spa. Families, couples, and business travellers alike will find the resort caters thoughtfully to their needs, with a dedicated kids' club, multiple dining venues, and versatile event spaces spread across the property.

What truly sets

The Magellan Sutera Resort

apart is its location within the self-contained Sutera Harbour township. Rather than simply being a hotel, the resort functions as a gateway to a broader lifestyle precinct that includes a 27-hole golf course, a 104-berth marina, and a range of recreational pursuits. It is a destination in its own right — one that allows guests to fill an entire holiday without ever needing to leave, yet remains just minutes from the vibrant heart of Kota Kinabalu city.

Room Types at The Magellan Sutera Resort

Deluxe Room

The Deluxe Room at

Magellan Sutera

offers a generous 44 square metres of living space, making it one of the more spacious standard room categories found in Kota Kinabalu's hotel scene. Each room is infused with rich cultural charm and elegant design, reflecting the spirit of Sabah's heritage through warm tones, local artwork, and refined furnishings. Guests may choose between a king-size bed or twin-sharing configuration, and the room comfortably accommodates up to four guests. Standard amenities include a flat-screen satellite television, a minibar, an electric kettle, complimentary WiFi, and a private balcony. The en-suite bathroom features a walk-in shower, a separate bathtub, plush bathrobes, and a hairdryer. Deluxe Rooms are available in both garden and sea view orientations, with the sea-facing option offering sweeping vistas across the South China Sea that are particularly stunning at sunset.

Superior Room

The Superior Room builds upon the Deluxe category with enhanced appointments and a preferred positioning within the resort. Furnished with either a king-size bed or twin beds, these rooms accommodate up to four guests and feature the same refined Sabahan-inspired décor found throughout the property. Guests enjoy a flat-screen television with satellite channels, a minibar stocked with a selection of beverages, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a private balcony. The en-suite bathroom includes both a bathtub and a separate shower, along with premium toiletries and bathrobes. Superior Rooms are well suited to couples and families who appreciate a touch of extra comfort without moving into the club or suite categories. The room provides a warm and graceful retreat that makes for an ideal base after a day exploring the islands or trekking in the hills of Sabah.

Club Room

Spanning an impressive 61 square metres, the Club Room at

The Magellan Sutera Resort

is designed for guests who seek personalised service, exclusive privileges, and thoughtful recognition. Available with a king-size bed or twin-sharing arrangement and accommodating up to four guests, the Club Room offers a noticeably more spacious layout with a comfortable seating area ideal for relaxing or catching up on work. In addition to all standard in-room amenities — including the flat-screen television, minibar, electric kettle, and private balcony — Club Room guests receive access to the exclusive Magellan Club Lounge. Club benefits typically include a dedicated check-in experience, daily evening cocktails and canapés, complimentary pressing of garments upon arrival, and an elevated level of personal attention from the resort's guest relations team. For travellers who value privacy and an enhanced hospitality experience, the Club Room represents outstanding value within the five-star tier.

Junior Suite

The Junior Suite, known as the Magellan Executive Suite, provides 96 square metres of sophisticated living space — more than double the footprint of the standard Deluxe Room. This spacious suite is designed with elegance and comfort at its core, featuring a stylish separate living area in addition to the bedroom, making it suitable for guests who need room to spread out or who wish to entertain in private. The suite accommodates up to four guests with a choice of king-size or twin-sharing bed configuration. Refined amenities and serene views complete the experience, while the en-suite bathroom is generously proportioned with premium fittings. The Junior Suite is an excellent choice for extended stays, honeymoon travellers, or business guests who require a working lounge area separate from the sleeping quarters.

Magellan Suite

At the pinnacle of the accommodation offering sits the Magellan Suite, an expansive 149-square-metre retreat designed for those who appreciate the finer things in life. This is the resort's most prestigious room category, combining a large bedroom with a separate, elegantly furnished living room and a dining area suitable for private meals or small gatherings. The suite accommodates up to four guests with a king-size or twin-sharing bed arrangement and includes all Magellan Club privileges — from exclusive lounge access to personalised concierge service. Every detail has been considered, from the premium bath amenities to the curated in-room welcome experience. Guests staying in the Magellan Suite enjoy panoramic views and the highest standard of hospitality that

The Magellan Sutera Resort Kota Kinabalu

has to offer, making it ideal for milestone celebrations, VIP visits, or simply an unforgettable indulgence.

Facilities and Amenities

The facilities at

The Magellan Sutera Resort

are among the most extensive of any hotel in Sabah. The centrepiece is a dramatic free-form swimming pool that stretches alongside the resort, framed by tropical palm trees and landscaped gardens with panoramic views of the South China Sea. A swim-up bar allows guests to enjoy refreshments without leaving the water, while a dedicated children's pool ensures younger swimmers have their own safe space to play. Beyond the resort's own pool, guests also have access to the Olympic-size swimming pool at the adjacent Sutera Harbour Marina and Country Club.

Wellness is well catered for at the resort through the

Mandara Spa

, an internationally acclaimed spa brand specialising in therapeutic Balinese massage techniques. Guests can choose from a range of treatments delivered in beautifully decorated indoor treatment rooms or under sea-facing outdoor pavilions — a truly unique experience. The resort's fitness centre is equipped with modern cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, open to all guests throughout their stay.

Sporting and recreational facilities are equally impressive. The 27-hole championship golf course, designed by renowned Australian golfer Graham Marsh, winds through landscaped tropical terrain with views of Mount Kinabalu and the sea. Tennis enthusiasts have access to two well-maintained courts, and there is also a volleyball court, table tennis facilities, and a bowling alley on site. For families, the resort operates a kids' club catering to children aged 3 to 12, with supervised activities running daily from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. A children's playground adjacent to the Little Magellan pool area provides additional entertainment for younger guests.

Complimentary WiFi is available throughout the resort, and free parking is provided for guests arriving by car. The 104-berth marina is a standout feature for boating enthusiasts and adds a distinctive character to the Sutera Harbour precinct that few other resorts in Malaysian Borneo can match.

Location and Getting There

The Magellan Sutera Resort

is located along Sutera Harbour Boulevard in the heart of the Sutera Harbour township, just south of Kota Kinabalu's city centre. The resort sits approximately 10 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, which translates to a drive of around 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Grab are readily available at the airport, with fares to the resort starting from approximately RM 30 to RM 40. Some guests also arrange airport transfers directly through the resort for a more seamless arrival experience.

Despite its tranquil, resort-like setting,

Magellan Sutera

is surprisingly well connected to the city. Kota Kinabalu's bustling centre is just a 10-minute drive away, providing easy access to shopping, street food, and cultural attractions. The IMAGO Shopping Mall, one of the city's most popular retail destinations, is approximately 3 kilometres from the resort. The Double Six Monument, a significant historical landmark, lies just 1.4 kilometres away, while the striking Sabah State Mosque is reachable within a 20-minute walk.

Nature lovers will find the resort perfectly positioned for excursions. Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park — a cluster of five stunning islands renowned for snorkelling, diving, and pristine beaches — is accessible via a short boat ride from Jesselton Point, which is around 10 minutes by car from the resort. The Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre and Sabah State Museum are both nearby, and the iconic Mount Kinabalu is reachable as a day trip or overnight excursion. The KK Central bus station, located a few minutes' drive from the resort, offers connections for travellers looking to explore the wider region by land.

Dining at The Magellan Sutera Resort

The Magellan Sutera Resort

houses five distinct dining venues, ensuring guests have ample variety without needing to leave the property. The resort's flagship restaurant,

Five Sails

, is located on Level 1 and serves a lavish international buffet breakfast daily from 6:00 am to 10:30 am. The spread is extensive, featuring a wide selection of Asian and Western dishes — from freshly baked pastries and made-to-order egg stations to beloved Malaysian favourites such as roti canai, nasi lemak with sambal, and local Sabahan specialities. Children aged five and under dine complimentarily at Five Sails when accompanied by their parents, with a maximum of two children per family.

For a more refined evening experience,

Ferdinand's

is the resort's acclaimed fine-dining Italian restaurant. Frequently praised for its exceptional food quality and romantic ambiance, Ferdinand's offers an authentic Italian menu featuring handmade pastas, premium imported ingredients, and an impressive wine selection. It is a popular choice for anniversary dinners, special celebrations, or any evening when guests wish to elevate their dining experience.

Al Fresco

provides a more relaxed atmosphere, situated beside the resort's beautifully landscaped pool with views of the sea. Specialising in seafood dishes, this open-air venue serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. The combination of fresh ocean breezes, spectacular scenery, and well-prepared seafood makes Al Fresco a favourite among guests who prefer casual outdoor dining. Rounding out the options are

Muffinz Deli Cafe

, a charming spot for freshly baked goods, artisan coffee, and light bites throughout the day, and

Tarik's Lobby Lounge

, where guests can unwind with tea, coffee, or cocktails in a relaxed setting accompanied by occasional live entertainment.

Why Stay at The Magellan Sutera Resort

A true resort experience in the heart of Kota Kinabalu.

Unlike many city hotels that offer limited grounds,

The Magellan Sutera Resort

delivers a full-scale resort experience — complete with sprawling pools, a championship golf course, a marina, and tropical gardens — all while remaining just minutes from Kota Kinabalu's urban attractions. It is the rare property that lets you feel worlds away from the city without actually being far from it.

World-class wellness at Mandara Spa.

The presence of Mandara Spa on the resort grounds is a significant draw for wellness-focused travellers. With its Balinese-inspired treatments, beachside pavilions, and serene atmosphere, the spa experience here rivals those found at top resorts across Southeast Asia. It is the ideal complement to a holiday spent exploring Sabah's natural wonders.

Exceptional facilities for families.

From the dedicated children's pool and kids' club to the playground, bowling alley, and complimentary dining for young children,

Magellan Sutera

is thoughtfully designed for family holidays. Parents can relax knowing their children are entertained and safe, while still enjoying the resort's adult-focused amenities.

Gateway to Borneo's natural treasures.

The resort's location makes it an ideal base for day trips to Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, Mount Kinabalu, and the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre. After a day of island-hopping, jungle trekking, or wildlife spotting, returning to the comfort of a five-star resort is a luxury that enhances the entire Sabah experience.

Unmatched variety of on-site activities.

With golf, tennis, bowling, a marina, multiple swimming pools, and five dining outlets, guests at

The Magellan Sutera Resort

can easily fill several days without venturing beyond the resort gates. This makes it particularly appealing for longer stays, multi-generational family holidays, or travellers who simply want everything at their fingertips.

Tips for Booking The Magellan Sutera Resort

Book during Sabah's dry season for the best experience.

The ideal time to visit Kota Kinabalu is between March and September, when rainfall is at its lowest and conditions are perfect for island excursions and outdoor activities. Booking during this window ensures you can make the most of the resort's pools, golf course, and al fresco dining venues. However, if you are flexible on weather, travelling during the shoulder months of October or February can yield more competitive room rates on Traveloka.

Request a sea-view room for sunset views.

The Magellan Sutera Resort faces the South China Sea, and the sunsets from sea-facing rooms are genuinely spectacular. When booking on Traveloka, look for room categories that specify a sea view orientation, particularly if you are celebrating a special occasion. The difference in experience is well worth any additional cost.

Consider the Club Room for added value.

While the Deluxe and Superior rooms are excellent in their own right, the Club Room at

Magellan Sutera

unlocks access to the exclusive Magellan Club Lounge with its complimentary evening cocktails, canapés, and personalised service. For couples or business travellers, the lounge access alone can offset the price difference and elevate the overall stay considerably.

Check in early and plan for a late checkout.

Standard check-in at the resort is from 3:00 pm, with checkout at 12:00 pm. If you are arriving on an early morning flight into Kota Kinabalu, consider contacting the resort in advance to request early check-in, subject to availability. Similarly, a late checkout request can give you a few extra hours to enjoy the pool or spa on your final day — a small detail that can make a meaningful difference to your holiday.

Take advantage of the full Sutera Harbour precinct.

When booking through Traveloka, remember that your stay at

The Magellan Sutera Resort Kota Kinabalu

grants access to facilities across the wider Sutera Harbour development, including the marina, the Graham Marsh-designed golf course, and the Olympic-size pool. Planning a few activities across the precinct ensures you experience the full breadth of what this exceptional resort community has to offer.

For the rate that this hotel charge (walk in rate was RM800) the hotel could do better in the following areas: 1. Wifi connection kept cutting off 2. Limited TV channel options. Poor TV resolution 3. Algae in the perimeter drain of the lap pool 4. Leaking plumbing fixtures in bathtub and at the valve to the toilet 5. Not up to 5 star hotel cleanliness 6. Air conditioner was out at their Strikers Bowl but luckily the first game (the only game we played was complimentary). Had to switch to different lanes several times because of malfunctions. Pros: 1. Staff was excellent and courteous 2. Breakfast options were excellent 3. Experience at Mandara Spa was excellent

Overall it was a good stay however I extended my stay for another night and the walk-in rate was RM800 or about USD200. For USD200, I expect the best from this hotel but the stay was not worth this rate. Wifi connection kept cutting off, the plumbing fixtures leak in the bath tub and to the toilet washlet. Lap pool could had algae on the drain along the perimeter of the pool. Staff however was really great. Breakfast food was great.

Some furniture a little aged. Bathtub stopper doesn’t work. WiFi is the absolute worst of any 5star hotel I’ve ever been in. Keeps kicking u out every time you closed the phone. Have to relog in EVERY time you turn on the phone. Cell signals sucks so u are reliant on the wifi. But overall great value for such a large oceanfront suite. Location cannot be beat. Very tired - if it’s a 3 star then that’s okay but it’s priced far more expensively. It is convenient for the airport - 15mins. Rooms are just worn out

Love the buffet breakfast, so much to choose from. Pools are great, close to other dining. This is our second visit and we will definitely be back again

This place is fine but I’d say very much surface style over substance.

Beautiful property with amazing views of the ocean. Lovely private beach within the resort which is ideal for children. The hotel staff were courteous, welcoming and ever ready to assist. True Sabahan hospitality!

Great hotel but 1 of the worse receptionist i've met. Most were great just 1 of them which I think is not experienced. Would not go back again.

Internet is highly unstable, you can barely complete a call before internet disconnected. It’s very tough for people work while travel

Very family oriented resort! Close to the Imago mall but it’s not walking distance. You can grab and go to everywhere very easily. There was no hair dryer in the room so I had to ask for one. Breakfast buffet was very superb with various options from Malaysian food to Korean.

Amenity is awesome and views are great.
