So for my first time in Bangkok by myself solo trip this was a great way to enter the city. The pool was clean and the guest were very friendly and amazing to hang out with everyone was open and had excellent communication with people that I now hold dear 711 is directly across the street which is wonderful also across the street is fresh fruit smoothies for about a dollar USD, which is also incredible. Kaosan road was close enough to walk to and far enough to have a little bit of quiet. I was staying on the fourth floor, so I was buffered from the sound of the nightclub downstairs. It didn’t bother me at all.

This Mad Monkey Hostel is AMAZING! If you’re looking for a sociable vibe, make sure you go here. I also tried other hostels in the area, but they didn’t compare to Mad Monkey!! Every night there are free shots, and on the Wednesday I stayed I also did the bar crawl which was so much fun. Even when I went down for breakfast everyone was very sociable - if you’re a solo traveller this place is great for you especially. It was also super clean (the cleaners were also so lovely and gave me recommendations), well air conditioned and the staff were very helpful. I also enjoyed the walking tour where I met so many new friends. And chilling by the pool is a must!!! The restaurant also has affordable and really tasty food. It is located in the best area a few mins walk from Khao San rd. I will be back!!! My favourite hostel ever.

First and foremost Mad Monkey Bangkok is a great hostel to meet people. For this stay however it was a short one night stay, from midnight until 7am. I arrived at 23:44 and two women were checking into a dorm in front. The entire process took some 16 minutes and I couldn’t fathom what was so slow; the guy kept doing other things. He then proceeds to offer them welcome drinks (bar is shut) and queries leaving passports or 250THB for towels and 250THB each for keys as a deposit or a passport. Anyhow I’m eventually served - and again the entire process takes an age. No welcome drink offered (he knew not if my early departure) and it’s again 1000 THB or a passport for deposit. I’m solo, so surely 500 THB. Between this he keeps checking emails, card receipts from printers etc and not actually serving me. I get to the room, it’s clean and comfortable but the AC is very slow to work; cooking the room from 29 on arrival to only 25 by 3am. It’s on max. I won’t stay here again, or at least in that room, but I’ll visit Mad Monkey for sure again. Check out was comparatively a breeze.

Location is very good close to Khao San road and a small park, but it's far from the SkyTrain and Metro station. The beds are ok but have no curtains which means less privacy. Don't use their bar as it's overpriced. Their organized tours are also a rip off. They charge you 500 BHT for a silly pub crawl and only take you to two pubs where prices are double.

I booked Mad Monkey because it is supposed to be a social/party hostel and was extremely disappointed. The facilities are nice and the room is good for a hostel, with a private bathroom, but they do not offer the social experience that they sell. Unlike other social hostels, there are basically no activities and no people from the hostel helping with the social aspect. My first full day was a Saturday and I was -obviously- expecting there to be some kind of activity but, despite the sign saying that there were going to be games, there were no activities in the hostel bar and no one from the hostel at all. This discouraged people from staying there, making it completely dead. The same happened on Monday, where the supposed activity also did not happen. I joined their pub crawl on Sunday, which was super expensive, took us to the most obvious locations, and only gave the free shot at one of the locations. Once more, the people from the hostel were making no effort and even left early. At a certain point, we were lost because they didn’t wait for everyone and just left before the next bar. The reception also barely speaks English, and provided me with wrong information several times. In summary, while the hostel facilities are nice, there are cheaper hostels (or even hotels) in Bangkok that would be more worth your money. The only reason to book Mad Monkey would be the social aspect and they do NOT offer that. Everyone I spoke to during my trip shared this view as well.
