Great support by hotel staff. I left my car key inside. Hotel staff helped me a lot by contacting a local locksmith and supervising the work until they successfully unlocked my car. My special thanks to Ms. Carrot. The hotel room is clean. It is a bit outdated but still okay and functioning perfectly. Breakfast was excellent, they had a variety for breakfast and the taste is awesome. They have a 25m length swimming pool and a beautiful garden. Everything is clean and well maintained. This hotel is a great choice for a weekend trip.

More about hotels in Udon Thani

Why Visit Udon Thani

Udon Thani offers Malaysian travellers a uniquely authentic Thai experience far removed from the tourist crowds of Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai. As one of Isan's principal cities, Udon Thani blends modern urban conveniences with deep-rooted Thai-Lao cultural traditions. The city is famous for the Red Lotus Sea (Talay Bua Daeng) at Nong Han Lake, where millions of pink water lilies bloom between December and February, creating one of Thailand's most breathtaking natural spectacles. Udon Thani also sits just 55 km from the Laos border, making it a popular base for travellers heading to Vientiane. The cost of living and travel expenses in Udon Thani are significantly lower than in southern Thailand or Bangkok, meaning your ringgit stretches much further. From vibrant night markets selling street food for as little as RM 3 (THB 30) to comfortable hotels under RM 100 per night, Udon Thani is an excellent value destination for budget-conscious Malaysian travellers.

Best Hotels in Udon Thani for Every Budget

Udon Thani's hotel scene offers remarkable value across all categories. Budget travellers can find clean, comfortable rooms at Top Hostel Udon Thani and Aek Udon Apartment, where nightly rates start from around RM 40 to RM 70. These properties provide air-conditioned rooms, free WiFi, and convenient locations within the city. Mid-range travellers will appreciate Home at Udon and B2 Udon Boutique & Budget Hotel, offering modern rooms, swimming pools, and breakfast options from approximately RM 80 to RM 180 per night. For those seeking more upscale comfort, Thanintorn Greenpark Hotel provides well-furnished rooms with full amenities including a restaurant and conference facilities, with rates from RM 150 to RM 350 per night. The overall affordability of accommodation in Udon Thani means even mid-range properties feel luxurious compared to similarly priced hotels in more touristy Thai destinations.

Getting to and Around Udon Thani

Udon Thani is easily accessible from Malaysia via Bangkok, with multiple daily flights connecting Bangkok's Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Udon Thani International Airport in approximately one hour. Low-cost carriers like AirAsia and Nok Air offer competitive fares, often available from RM 100 to RM 250 one way from Bangkok. From the airport, taxis and songthaews (shared pickup trucks) connect to the city centre in about 15 to 20 minutes for approximately RM 10 to RM 25 (THB 100 to THB 250). Within Udon Thani, tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are the most common forms of local transport, with short trips costing RM 2 to RM 5 (THB 20 to THB 50). Grab is also available in Udon Thani for ride-hailing. For exploring attractions outside the city like the Red Lotus Sea or Ban Chiang, renting a motorbike (from RM 15/THB 150 per day) or hiring a private car with driver (from RM 80 to RM 150/THB 800 to THB 1,500 per day) are the most practical options. Long-distance buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal take approximately 6 to 7 hours and cost around RM 25 to RM 50 (THB 250 to THB 500).

Top Attractions in Udon Thani

The Red Lotus Sea (Talay Bua Daeng) at Nong Han Lake is Udon Thani's most famous attraction, where vast fields of pink and red lotus flowers bloom across the lake's surface from December to February. Boat tours depart early morning when the flowers are fully open, costing approximately RM 10 to RM 30 (THB 100 to THB 300) per person. Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 km east of the city, showcases prehistoric pottery and artefacts dating back over 5,000 years. The Ban Chiang National Museum displays beautifully painted pottery that represents one of the earliest known Bronze Age civilisations in Southeast Asia. Within the city, Udon Thani Museum offers free admission and documents the region's history from prehistoric times through the American military presence during the Vietnam War era. Phu Phrabat Historical Park, located 60 km northwest of the city, features unusual mushroom-shaped rock formations and ancient rock paintings set within a forested hillside — a truly unique and uncrowded attraction.

Night Markets and Shopping in Udon Thani

Udon Thani is a paradise for night market lovers and bargain shoppers. UD Town Night Market, the city's most popular evening market, operates daily and features hundreds of stalls selling clothing, accessories, electronics, and street food. The atmosphere is lively and prices are incredibly low — expect to pay RM 3 to RM 15 (THB 30 to THB 150) for most items. Nong Prajak Park Night Market, located around the scenic park and lake, is another excellent option with a more relaxed atmosphere and plenty of food vendors. For daytime shopping, Central Plaza Udon Thani is a modern air-conditioned mall with international and Thai brands, a cinema, and a well-stocked food court. The Talad Thai-Isan market near the train station is a bustling morning market selling fresh produce, local snacks, and Isan specialities. Malaysian travellers will find prices in Udon Thani's markets to be a fraction of what they would pay in Bangkok or southern Thai resort towns.

Isan Food and Dining in Udon Thani

Udon Thani is the gateway to Isan cuisine, one of Thailand's most distinctive and flavourful regional food traditions. Som tam (spicy green papaya salad), larb (minced meat salad with herbs and lime), and sticky rice are the foundation of every Isan meal. Grilled chicken (gai yang) and grilled pork neck (kor moo yang) are served at street stalls throughout the city for just RM 3 to RM 8 (THB 30 to THB 80) per portion. Udon Thani's Vietnamese-influenced cuisine is another unique feature, with delicious spring rolls and pho available at the Vietnamese Quarter near the train station. The city is also famous for its version of ba mee (egg noodles) served with wontons and roasted pork. Night market food stalls offer an incredible variety of dishes from RM 2 to RM 10 (THB 20 to THB 100) — try moo ping (grilled pork skewers), kai tod (fried chicken), and khao niew mamuang (mango sticky rice) for dessert. For a sit-down meal with air conditioning, restaurants at hotels like Thanintorn Greenpark Hotel serve both Thai and international cuisine at reasonable prices.

Day Trips from Udon Thani

Udon Thani's strategic location in northeastern Thailand makes it an excellent base for day trips. The most popular excursion is to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, accessible via the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge about 55 km north of the city. Malaysian passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at the Lao border for approximately RM 130 to RM 175 (USD 30 to USD 42 depending on nationality). The crossing takes about 30 minutes, and you can explore Vientiane's Pha That Luang temple, Patuxai monument, and riverside restaurants before returning the same day. Erawan Cave (Tham Erawan), located about 50 km west of Udon Thani in Nong Bua Lamphu province, houses a dramatic reclining Buddha statue inside a massive cave. Phu Foi Lom, a hilltop garden park about 40 km southwest of the city, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and colourful flower gardens. For those willing to travel further, the scenic Loei province with its mountainous landscapes and cooler climate is approximately 150 km to the west.

Practical Tips for Malaysian Travellers in Udon Thani

Malaysian passport holders receive visa-free entry to Thailand for up to 30 days, making Udon Thani an easy destination to visit. ATMs are widely available throughout Udon Thani, though most charge a THB 220 (approximately RM 28) foreign card fee per withdrawal. Currency exchange booths at Central Plaza and the city centre generally offer better rates than the airport. English is less widely spoken in Udon Thani compared to tourist-heavy destinations in southern Thailand, so having a translation app on your phone is recommended. The best time to visit Udon Thani is during the cool season from November to February, when temperatures are pleasant at 15°C to 28°C and the Red Lotus Sea is in full bloom. The hot season from March to May can see temperatures exceed 40°C. Book your hotels through Traveloka to access exclusive deals and read verified reviews from fellow Malaysian travellers.
