The United States of America is also known as, The United States, The U.S., USA or America. With a population of more than 325 million, it is among the most populated and largest countries in the world. America is composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various other possessions. Excluding Alaska and Hawaii, the other 48 states are located on the North American continent, boarded by Canada, Mexico, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. Famously discovered by Christopher Columbus, early settlements were by people from European nations. As the established dominant presence, the British founded the first colony, Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. As more and more settlers came, the surrounding areas were colonised into 13 colonies. By 1732, the Thirteen Colonies was established along the Atlantic coast and came to be known as the New England Colonies. Although the colonies were governed by the Parliament in England, they became very self-governing and soon started resisting Parliament’s orders. The 13 colonies declared independence on the 4th of July, 1776 and became the first states of the United States of America. The colonist felt that the Parliament had no right to impose Tax laws to pay for England’s war debt. This basis started a war that is known as the Revolutionary War which began in 1775 and ended in 1783.
During the period between 1803 till 1860, the country expanded to include the Northwest and Southwest states. Due to the difference in ideals, there was a period where a few Southern states seceded from the United States to form the Confederate States. This action caused the Civil War which lasted for four years beginning in 1861.
Under the Constitution, Congress has the authority to admit new states into America. The number of states expanded from 13 to 50 and the modern United States of America added its final two states with the joining of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959.
