This hotel is in a fantastic location right by the river. I had a wonderful stay here. The staff, Yui Hen, and Kevin, were incredibly helpful and fluent in English. They provided great suggestions on where to go, making my stay in Yangshuo truly memorable. I wish I could extend my stay at least 3 day 2 night here, as there is so much to explore in Yangshuo, with its magnificent views. The hotel itself is clean, offers great hospitality, and is an excellent place to stay.

Guilin: China's Karst destination for the Discerning Filipino Traveller

Guilin, a city cradled by dramatic karst mountains and bisected by the serene Li River, offers a visual spectacle unlike any other in China. For travellers from the Philippines, it presents an accessible yet exotic escape, a chance to witness landscapes that have inspired poets and painters for centuries. Beyond the iconic peaks, Guilin boasts a rich cultural tapestry, a reflection of its long history as a vital hub in southern China. It’s a destination that promises not just breathtaking scenery but also a deep dive into authentic Chinese traditions, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a journey that is both visually stunning and culturally enriching.

The region's allure lies in its diverse geography, offering distinct experiences depending on where you choose to base yourself. From the bustling heart of Xiangshan, with its proximity to key landmarks, to the more tranquil vibes of Chixing, known for its natural beauty and burgeoning tourism, Guilin caters to varied preferences. Further afield, Diecai offers a glimpse into local life, while Lingui provides a gateway to the region's modern developments. Even the renowned Yangshuo and Longsheng Gezu Zizhixian, though often considered separate destinations, are intrinsically linked to the Guilin experience, showcasing the vastness and variety that this part of China holds.

For travellers from the Philippines, Guilin represents exceptional value. With starting prices around ₱ 299.91 per night and an impressive overall review score of 9.0 from over 6,376 reviews, it offers a high-quality international travel experience without the prohibitive costs often associated with global destinations. This affordability extends to dining, activities, and local transport, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious explorers and those looking to stretch their travel funds further. The ease of finding book hotel options that fit various budgets further enhances its appeal.

The accommodation landscape in Guilin mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from luxurious retreats like the Lijiang Pushang Hotel, offering premium amenities, to charming and more budget-friendly options such as the YangShuo Percent Hotel, which consistently garners high praise from guests. This spectrum ensures that whether you're seeking five-star service or a comfortable, well-located base, Guilin has a lodging option to suit your needs and expectations, providing a solid foundation for exploring the region's wonders.

Guilin is a destination that speaks to a wide array of international travellers. For those from the US and Europe, it offers a profound cultural immersion, a chance to explore ancient traditions and witness natural beauty that rivals any in the world. Indian travellers will find familiar warmth in the hospitality and a surprisingly diverse culinary scene, all at a very reasonable price point. While direct connections might be less common for African travellers, Guilin's unique landscape and rich history provide a compelling reason to consider a journey to this captivating corner of China.

Best Areas to Stay in Guilin

Guilin's charm is not monolithic; it unfolds across distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of experiences for international visitors. Choosing where to stay is a crucial decision that can significantly shape your entire trip, from the ease of accessing iconic sights to the flavour of your daily explorations. Understanding these different areas will help you find the perfect base that aligns with your travel style and interests, ensuring a more fulfilling and memorable journey through this picturesque region.

Xiangshan

Xiangshan district serves as Guilin's vibrant core, a bustling hub where the city's pulse is most strongly felt. For international travellers, it offers an immediate immersion into local life, with a dense concentration of shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. This area is particularly appealing to those who prefer to be in the thick of the action, with easy access to transportation networks and a lively atmosphere that extends into the evening. Its proximity to key attractions makes it a practical choice for first-time visitors eager to explore.

From Xiangshan, iconic sights like Elephant Trunk Hill and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area are within easy reach, often accessible by a short walk or a quick taxi ride. The district is well-connected to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) via airport shuttle buses, and local transport options are plentiful, including buses and taxis. For travellers looking to explore beyond the immediate vicinity, the district's central location makes it a convenient starting point for day trips and excursions throughout the wider Guilin region.

Chixing

Chixing, often associated with the broader Yangshuo area, offers a more laid-back and nature-focused experience, a stark contrast to the urban energy of Xiangshan. This district is a magnet for travellers seeking to immerse themselves in the iconic karst landscapes that Guilin is famous for. The vibe here is distinctly more relaxed, with a focus on outdoor activities and enjoying the stunning natural beauty. It's an ideal base for those who dream of waking up to mist-covered peaks and spending their days cycling through picturesque countryside.

Chixing is the gateway to numerous natural wonders, including the Li River cruise departure points and the famous West Street in Yangshuo, a lively hub for tourists. Visitors can easily rent bicycles or scooters to explore the surrounding villages and rice paddies, or embark on boat tours. While further from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), it's well-connected by bus services from Guilin city. For those wanting to experience the heart of the karst scenery, booking book attractions and tours from Chixing is highly recommended.

Diecai

Diecai district presents a more authentic slice of Guilin life, offering a quieter, more residential atmosphere compared to the main tourist centres. This area is perfect for travellers who wish to step away from the crowds and experience a more local pace of life, while still maintaining convenient access to the city's amenities. It provides a glimpse into the everyday routines of Guilin residents, with local markets, smaller eateries, and community spaces. For those seeking a genuine cultural exchange, Diecai offers a welcoming and less commercialised environment.

Diecai is home to the beautiful Diecai Mountain Park, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape, a less crowded alternative to some of the more famous viewpoints. The district is also relatively close to Guilin University of Electronic Technology, suggesting a younger, more dynamic local population. While not as directly serviced by tourist shuttles from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) as the central districts, it is easily reachable by local bus or taxi, and offers a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing.

Lingui

Lingui district represents the modern face of Guilin, an area undergoing significant development and offering a glimpse into the city's future. It's a district that appeals to travellers who appreciate contemporary infrastructure and a more organised urban environment. While it may lack the immediate historical charm of older districts, Lingui provides excellent connectivity and a growing number of modern amenities, including shopping centres and business facilities. Its strategic position, particularly its proximity to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), makes it a practical choice for transit passengers or those prioritising easy airport access.

Lingui's primary advantage is its close proximity to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), with several hotels and transport links designed for travellers arriving or departing. This makes it an excellent base for early morning flights or late-night arrivals. While it may not be as rich in traditional tourist attractions as other districts, its modern infrastructure supports a comfortable stay, and it serves as a convenient jumping-off point for exploring the wider region. The district is also developing its own commercial centres, offering shopping and dining options.

Yangshuo (as a broader area within Guilin region)

Yangshuo, while technically a county under Guilin's administration, is often treated as a destination in its own right and is a worth visiting for anyone exploring the Guilin region. It embodies the classic karst landscape, with dramatic peaks, the winding Li River, and picturesque countryside that have made this part of China world-famous. The atmosphere in Yangshuo is a blend of natural serenity and tourist vibrancy, particularly along West Street, offering a unique experience for travellers seeking both adventure and relaxation amidst stunning scenery.

Yangshuo is the epicentre for Li River cruises, bamboo rafting, and cycling tours through the rural areas. Its West Street is a lively hub with numerous guesthouses, restaurants, and shops catering to international visitors. While it's a considerable distance from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), direct bus services are available, and many travellers opt to stay here for several days to fully explore its natural wonders. The sheer density of natural attractions makes Yangshuo a prime location for those wanting to immerse themselves in the iconic Guilin landscape.

Longsheng Gezu Zizhixian (Longji Rice Terraces)

Longsheng Gezu Zizhixian, most famous for the breathtaking Longji Rice Terraces, offers an experience far removed from the urban centres of Guilin, presenting a unique cultural and scenic immersion. This area is a draw for travellers seeking to witness traditional rural life and spectacular agricultural landscapes. The atmosphere is one of profound natural beauty and cultural authenticity, with the terraced fields creating a stunning visual spectacle that changes with the seasons. It's a destination for those who appreciate the artistry of human cultivation in harmony with nature.

The primary attraction here are the Longji Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering incredible hiking opportunities and panoramic views. Visitors can stay in traditional guesthouses within the villages set among the terraces, providing an intimate connection with the local Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority cultures. Reaching Longsheng involves a bus journey from Guilin city, and it's best experienced as an overnight trip to fully appreciate the scenery. It's a journey into a different side of China, showcasing its rural heart and enduring traditions.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Guilin

Guilin's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of its southern Chinese heritage, offering a delightful array of flavours and dishes that are distinct and deeply satisfying. For travellers from the Philippines, exploring Guilin's food scene is an adventure in itself, presenting opportunities to savour unique local specialties and experience authentic Chinese dining culture. From the famous Guilin noodles to delicately prepared river fish, the region promises a gastronomic journey that complements its stunning natural beauty, making every meal a memorable part of the travel experience.

The most iconic dish that immediately comes to mind when discussing Guilin cuisine is undoubtedly Guilin Rice Noodles (Guilin Mifen). These thin, chewy rice noodles are typically served in a flavourful broth, often accompanied by a variety of toppings such as pickled beans, peanuts, chili oil, and thinly sliced meat. Another local delicacy is the Beer Fish (Pijiu Yu), a dish where fresh river fish is cooked with beer and a medley of spices, resulting in a tender, aromatic, and slightly sweet flavour profile. Other must-try items include oil-fried dumplings, stir-fried snails, and various seasonal vegetables, all prepared with a distinct local flair that sets Guilin's food apart from other Chinese regional cuisines.

For an authentic taste of Guilin, exploring local food streets and markets is essential. The area around West Street in Yangshuo, though tourist-oriented, offers a plethora of dining options, from street food stalls to sit-down restaurants serving local specialties. In Guilin city itself, areas near the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic spot and the pedestrian streets in Xiangshan district are good places to find local eateries. For Muslim travellers seeking Halal options, it is advisable to look for restaurants specifically marked as Halal or those serving cuisines that naturally align with Halal principles, such as some Xinjiang or Uyghur restaurants, though dedicated Halal establishments might require some searching.

The cost of dining in Guilin offers excellent value for international travellers. A hearty meal of Guilin Rice Noodles from a local eatery can cost as little as ₱ 70-140 (approximately $1.50-$3 USD). Mid-range restaurants offering dishes like Beer Fish or stir-fries might range from ₱ 350-700 (approximately $7-$15 USD) per person for a satisfying meal. Upscale dining experiences, perhaps in hotels or more refined establishments, could cost upwards of ₱ 1,400 (approximately $30 USD) per person, but even these prices are considerably lower than comparable dining in many Western countries, offering a great opportunity to explore diverse culinary options without breaking the bank.

Navigating dining etiquette in Guilin is straightforward for most international visitors. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with lunch typically between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, and dinner from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Tipping is not customary in China, and attempting to tip may even cause confusion or slight embarrassment. It's polite to wait for your host to start eating, and cheap hotels book flight
