We absolutely loved our stay in Wale Walanda. We stayed for 3 nights and very much enjoyed our hosts' hospitality. The place is very special, cottages are built on small ponds with a lot of colorful waterlilies. The interior of the restaurant is very nicely decorated and there are tons of plants and flowers, which adds to the ambiance. :) The host was very nice and helpful. We absolutely loved the breakfast pancakes, which were according to their own recipe and just yummy! If you are coming to the Tomohon area, this is definitely a great place to stay 🩷❤️

A must-try in Kakas and the wider Minahasa region is Tinutuan, a traditional vegetable porridge often referred to as "Bubur Manado." This nutritious dish is packed with various local vegetables and is a staple for breakfast or a light meal. Another local delicacy is Cakalang Fufu, smoked skipjack tuna, which is prepared with a distinct smoky flavour and often served with spicy sambal. These spots often serve the most traditional and flavourful dishes at very affordable prices. Areas like those found in the neighbourhoods of West Tondano or Pineleng can offer a good concentration of such establishments. For Muslim travellers, seeking out restaurants that clearly display 'Halal' certification is advisable to ensure compliance with dietary laws, a practice that is widely available in Indonesia.

When dining in Kakas, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed with family and friends, and it's common to eat with a spoon and fork, though some dishes are traditionally eaten with hands. In Kakas, as in much of Indonesia, politeness and respect are highly valued. A warm smile and a polite greeting, such as "Selamat pagi" (Good morning) or "Terima kasih" (Thank you), go a long way. When visiting homes or more traditional areas, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum, and it's generally advisable to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural communities, to show respect for local customs.

When visiting landmarks or engaging with local communities, always be mindful of photography. It's polite to ask for permission before taking pictures of people, particularly in more traditional settings. When entering places of worship or significant cultural sites, ensure you are dressed appropriately – covering shoulders and knees is often a requirement. Queuing culture is generally observed, but patience is key, as service can sometimes be more relaxed than what international visitors might be accustomed to.

For personal safety in Kakas, standard precautions apply. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or during transit. While Kakas is generally safe, it's wise to use reputable transportation services. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in many parts of Indonesia and can offer a convenient and transparent way to get around. For emergencies, knowing local numbers is crucial. The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta can provide assistance to Filipino nationals in case of serious issues.

During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region's natural beauty. While this period might see slightly higher prices and more visitors, it offers the most comfortable travel conditions. The shoulder months of April and October can also be good options, offering a balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds, making it easier to book attractions and find good deals.

Before you depart for Kakas, ensure you have your passport, which must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and some establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets and smaller vendors. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for easy data access. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.

Visa Information

For Filipino passport holders planning a trip to Kakas, understanding the visa requirements for entering Indonesia is a crucial step in the travel planning process. Indonesia, like many countries, has specific regulations for foreign nationals, and it's essential to be well-informed to ensure a smooth entry and a pleasant stay in the region. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

Philippine passport holders benefit from visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing stays of up to 30 days. This visa exemption is a significant advantage, simplifying travel arrangements considerably. To qualify, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Indonesia, and you should be prepared to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, upon arrival.

While visa-free entry is a great convenience, it's always recommended to verify the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your trip, as policies can change. Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your stay, as immigration officials may inquire about your financial capacity. Familiarizing yourself with these requirements beforehand will prevent any last-minute issues and ensure your journey to Kakas is seamless.

It is imperative for all travellers to confirm the most current visa policies and entry requirements directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. While visa-free entry is generally available for short tourist stays, regulations can be updated without prior notice. Therefore, confirming your entry status before booking your flight is a prudent measure to guarantee a hassle-free travel experience to Kakas.
