I had the most pleasant stay here. Ubud Valley Boutique Resort has everything we need for a relaxing family vacation. We chose to stay in two bedroom private pool villas with the valley view, when we get there we found the view had exceeded our expectations, way way more amazing then the picture. Authentic balinese thematic building design, spacious and super clean room, lots of common space, infinite design private pool, wonderful scinery, all green nature and serenity. Way down on the valley we can see the river, and also several times we saw birds fly with beautiful colors across our building, which we will not find in the city. Delicious food, perfect combination of afternoon tea and great selection of breakfast menu. The hotel employees are also very friendly. Always greet us as a family and make us feel always prioritized. Staying at Ubud Valley Boutique Resort gave us an extraordinari ambiance to experience the nature of Ubud. I would highly recommend it this is one of the best stay in Ubud.

The allure of Ubud lies in its multifaceted character, a tapestry woven from distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour of Balinese life. From the serene, spiritual ambiance of areas like Pejeng Kangin, dotted with ancient temples and lush landscapes, to the more central, bustling hubs of Ubud itself, the region provides a spectrum of experiences. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Ubud

Ubud's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of Indonesia's rich gastronomic heritage, with a distinct Balinese flavour that tantalizes the taste buds of international visitors. The region is celebrated for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients, often infused with aromatic spices and traditional cooking methods. From the ubiquitous Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Mie Goreng (fried noodles) to more regional specialties like Babi Guling (suckling pig) and Bebek Betutu (slow-cooked duck), Ubud offers an authentic taste of Indonesian cuisine that is both diverse and delicious.

For an immersive dining experience, exploring Ubud's local markets and warungs (small, family-run eateries) is highly recommended. Areas like the Ubud Art Market vicinity and the streets radiating from the central market are brimming with food stalls offering affordable and authentic dishes. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is increasingly common, with many warungs and restaurants clearly indicating their Halal status, ensuring a comfortable dining experience. Look for signs or inquire politely about ingredients and preparation methods.

The cost of dining in Ubud offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and meals at local warungs can range from as little as ₱ 50 to ₱ 150 (approximately $1 to $3 USD), providing an incredibly budget-friendly way to sample local flavours. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 200 to ₱ 500 (approximately $4 to $10 USD) for a main course, while upscale dining experiences can range from ₱ 600 upwards (approximately $12 USD and above). This affordability allows travellers to explore a wide variety of culinary options without breaking the bank.

Navigating dining etiquette in Ubud is straightforward and contributes to a pleasant experience. While tipping is not mandatory, a small gratuity of 5-10% for exceptional service is always appreciated. It's customary to use your right hand when giving or receiving food or money. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to try a bit of everything offered. Be mindful of spice levels, as Indonesian cuisine can be quite fiery; asking for "tidak pedas" (not spicy) is a useful phrase.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Ubud

Ubud, while welcoming to international visitors, possesses a rich cultural tapestry with specific customs that travellers should be aware of to ensure respectful and harmonious interactions. A key aspect of Balinese culture is the concept of 'Tri Hita Karana,' the three causes of well-being: harmony with God, harmony among people, and harmony with nature. This philosophy permeates daily life, influencing everything from religious ceremonies to social interactions, and understanding it can greatly enhance your appreciation of the local way of life.

When visiting sacred sites like Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit or Rumah Haruku, adherence to dress codes is paramount. Both men and women are expected to wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees; sarongs and sashes are often available for rent or provided at the entrance. It is important to be quiet and respectful within temple grounds, avoid pointing your feet directly at religious icons, and never step on offerings. Photography is usually permitted, but always check for specific signage or ask permission before taking pictures of people.

For practical safety in Ubud, maintaining awareness of your surroundings is key. While generally a safe destination, petty theft can occur in crowded tourist areas. It is advisable to keep valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. For emergencies, the local police number is 112. The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta can be contacted for consular assistance, and it's wise to have their details handy.

Filipino travellers should also consider health precautions. It is recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues, and be cautious with street food if you have a sensitive digestive system. The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary point of contact for consular services, and for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) or those seeking support, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) can provide guidance. Always ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining before your trip.

Getting to Ubud and Getting Around

Reaching Ubud from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves a flight to Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), followed by a transfer to Ubud. While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) are not always available, connecting flights through hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Jakarta are common. These journeys can range from 5 to 10 hours, depending on the layover duration. The cost of flights can vary significantly, but booking in advance through Traveloka can help secure competitive fares in PHP.

Once you land at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ubud is approximately a 1 to 1.5-hour drive away, depending on traffic conditions. Several transportation options are available for the transfer, including pre-booked private cars, airport taxis, and ride-sharing services. For those seeking convenience and a seamless arrival, booking a transfer in advance is highly recommended. This allows you to bypass potential queues at the airport and have a driver ready to take you directly to your accommodation in Ubud.

The best time to visit Ubud generally falls within the dry season, from April to September, when the weather is sunny and less humid, making it ideal for exploring the region's natural beauty and cultural sites. However, this period also coincides with peak tourist season, meaning higher prices and larger crowds. For travellers seeking a more tranquil experience and potentially lower accommodation rates, the shoulder months of April-May and September-October can offer a good balance.

Before departing for Ubud, ensure you have a comprehensive pre-departure checklist. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but major currencies like USD are often accepted in tourist areas, though exchange rates may not be favourable. It's advisable to exchange some currency upon arrival or withdraw from ATMs. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is a cost-effective way to stay connected. For Philippine passport holders planning a visit to Indonesia to experience the cultural richness of Ubud, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically up to 30 days. This allows for convenient travel for tourism purposes without the need for a pre-arranged visa. However, it is always recommended to verify the latest immigration policies with official sources before your travel dates, as regulations can be subject to change. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

The application process for visa-free entry, while straightforward, requires specific documentation. Travellers must possess a Philippine passport with a minimum validity of six months beyond their intended stay in Indonesia. Additionally, proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your visit are typically required by immigration officials. While no specific visa fee is associated with visa-free entry, ensure your passport is in good condition and free from damage.

Given that immigration policies can evolve, it is strongly advised for all travellers to confirm their visa status and entry requirements directly with the official Indonesian immigration authorities or the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines well in advance of booking flights. This proactive approach ensures a smooth and hassle-free entry into Indonesia, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip to Ubud.
