I had the most pleasant stay here. Ubud Valley Boutique Resort has everything we need for a relaxing family vacation. We chose to stay in two bedroom private pool villas with the valley view, when we get there we found the view had exceeded our expectations, way way more amazing then the picture. Authentic balinese thematic building design, spacious and super clean room, lots of common space, infinite design private pool, wonderful scinery, all green nature and serenity. Way down on the valley we can see the river, and also several times we saw birds fly with beautiful colors across our building, which we will not find in the city. Delicious food, perfect combination of afternoon tea and great selection of breakfast menu. The hotel employees are also very friendly. Always greet us as a family and make us feel always prioritized. Staying at Ubud Valley Boutique Resort gave us an extraordinari ambiance to experience the nature of Ubud. I would highly recommend it this is one of the best stay in Ubud.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Ubud

Ubud's culinary scene is a vibrant reflection of Indonesian and Balinese traditions, offering a diverse mix of flavours that appeal to a global palate. Iconic dishes like Babi Guling (suckling pig), Bebek Betutu (slow-cooked duck), and Nasi Campur (mixed rice) are must-tries, showcasing the depth of local ingredients and cooking techniques. The region's emphasis on fresh, local produce also means that vegetarian and vegan options are abundant and creatively prepared, making it a destination that satisfies diverse dietary preferences.

For an authentic taste of Ubud, explore the bustling Ubud Art Market for local snacks and Nasi Campur stalls, or venture into the charming streets of Penestanan and Ubud Central for a wide array of restaurants. Areas near Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit often feature smaller warungs serving traditional fare. For Muslim travellers, seeking out establishments that clearly label "Halal" is advisable, as many local eateries may not adhere to strict Halal practices, though options are increasingly available.

Dining in Ubud offers a spectrum of price points, making it accessible for various budgets. Street food and local warungs can offer delicious meals for as little as USD 2-5 per person. Mid-range restaurants typically range from USD 8-20 per person, providing a comfortable dining experience with a broader menu selection. High-end restaurants and fine dining establishments can cost USD 30 and upwards, offering sophisticated ambiance and gourmet cuisine, which generally represents good value compared to similar offerings in Western countries.

When dining in Ubud, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. Meals are often enjoyed at a leisurely pace, and it's polite to wait for your entire party to be served before beginning. Many local eateries use communal condiments, so it's common to share. Understanding these nuances can lead to more meaningful interactions and a deeper appreciation of the local culture.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Ubud

Ubud's cultural landscape is deeply rooted in Balinese Hinduism, and understanding local customs is key to respectful travel. Dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites, covering shoulders and knees; sarongs are often available for rent or included with entry. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. It's also customary to use your right hand when giving or receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean.

When visiting landmarks like Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit or Rumah Haruku, always be mindful of ongoing ceremonies or prayers. Observe respectfully from a distance unless invited to participate. Photography is usually permitted, but always ask permission before taking close-up shots of people. Entering temples often requires a sarong and sash, and it's polite to remove your shoes before entering any building where locals remove theirs.

Ubud is generally a safe destination, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets. For transportation, reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer transparent pricing. Negotiate taxi fares before starting your journey if not using a meter. Staying aware of your personal belongings and using trusted transport options will ensure a secure and pleasant visit.

In case of emergencies, dial 112 for general assistance. For medical needs, numerous clinics and hospitals are available in and around Ubud. The nearest embassies for major source markets are typically located in Denpasar or Jakarta. It is highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and potential unforeseen events. Staying informed about local conditions and taking sensible precautions will contribute to a safe and enjoyable trip.

Getting to Ubud and Getting Around

Reaching Ubud from key international hubs involves flying into Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). For travellers from the United States (e.g., New York JFK, Los Angeles LAX), expect flight durations of 20-25 hours with one or two layovers, often in major Asian hubs like Singapore, Seoul, or Tokyo. European travellers from London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), or Paris (CDG) will find similar journey times of 15-20 hours with one stop.

Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), or Chennai (MAA) can typically reach DPS in 8-12 hours with one or two connections. African travellers from Nairobi (NBO), Lagos (LOS), Johannesburg (JNB), or Addis Ababa (ADD) will face longer journeys, often 15-25 hours with multiple layovers. From DPS, Ubud is approximately a 1 to 1.5-hour drive, depending on traffic. You can easily book flight options on Traveloka to find the best routes and prices.

Once in Ubud, getting around is relatively straightforward. While walking is feasible for exploring central areas, for longer distances or reaching surrounding villages, options include metered taxis, ride-hailing apps like Grab, and scooter rentals. Grab offers competitive pricing and convenience, with typical fares for short trips within Ubud costing USD 2-5. Scooter rentals are popular for independent exploration, costing around USD 5-10 per day, but require an international driving permit and caution on busy roads. Local 'bemo' buses exist but are less convenient for tourists. For exploring neighbourhoods like Pejeng Kangin or venturing further afield, hiring a private car with a driver for a day can cost between USD 30-50.

The best time to visit Ubud is generally during the dry season, from April to September, which coincides with peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the rice paddies. However, this period also sees higher hotel prices and more crowds. The shoulder months of April, May, and September offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. The wet season, from October to March, brings higher rainfall, though often in short, intense bursts, and can offer lower accommodation rates, appealing to budget-conscious travellers from India and Africa. Before departing for Ubud, ensure you have the necessary travel documents and preparations. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but USD is widely accepted in tourist areas, though exchanging some cash for smaller purchases is recommended. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport or in town is advisable for data access, with providers like Telkomsel offering good coverage. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for transport, and a translation app. While not strictly required for short tourist stays, understanding local customs and having a basic grasp of Indonesian phrases can greatly enhance your interactions.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit Indonesia, including the region of Ubud, visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. US passport holders can typically enter Indonesia visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, with the possibility of extension. European passport holders from countries like the UK, Germany, and France also generally benefit from visa-free entry for similar durations. Indian passport holders are usually eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) or can apply for an e-VOA, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days, extendable once. For many African nationalities, including those from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia, a Visa on Arrival or an e-VOA is often available, but it is crucial to verify the specific requirements for each country, as policies can be more stringent.

The application process for Visas on Arrival or e-VOAs typically requires a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, a return or onward ticket, and a fee payable in USD. For US and European citizens entering visa-free, proof of onward travel is usually sufficient. Indian and most African travellers will need to pay a fee for their VOA, generally ranging from USD 30-50, depending on the duration and type of visa. It is essential to have sufficient funds or credit card capacity to cover these fees and any potential extensions. Some nationalities may require an invitation letter or specific documentation, so thorough pre-travel checks are vital.

Visa regulations and entry policies are subject to change by the Indonesian government. Therefore, it is imperative for all travellers, regardless of their nationality, to verify the most current visa requirements with the official Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia or the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate in their home country well in advance of their travel dates. Confirming your specific visa status and requirements before booking flights is a prudent step to avoid any last-minute complications or disruptions to your travel plans to Ubud.
