I was so satisfied staying here. The location is strategic, as it's connected to the Ciputra Mall. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious, clean, and well-equipped. Plus, the view from the bathtub overlooks the city, making it so relaxing. I just requested mirror art, and when I arrived, I was given two welcome cakes. One day and one night. The service was exceptional and very satisfying. 😍

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Sawahan

Sawahan, as part of Surabaya, offers a culinary landscape that is a vibrant reflection of East Javanese and broader Indonesian flavours. The district is a fantastic place for international travellers to dive into authentic local cuisine, from bustling street food stalls to established eateries. The food scene here is characterized by its rich spices, diverse ingredients, and a unique blend of sweet, savoury, and spicy notes that define Indonesian cooking. Exploring Sawahan's food offerings is an essential part of the travel experience, providing a delicious insight into the local culture.

The most iconic dishes you'll encounter in Sawahan and Surabaya include 'Nasi Goreng' (fried rice), 'Sate Ayam' (chicken satay), and 'Gado-Gado' (vegetable salad with peanut sauce). For a taste of Surabaya's specific culinary heritage, try 'Rawon', a dark, rich beef soup seasoned with keluak nuts, or 'Lontong Balap', a dish of rice cakes with bean sprouts, tofu, and peanut sauce. Many of these dishes are readily available at local warungs (small eateries) and street food vendors, offering an authentic and affordable dining experience.

For travellers seeking Halal options, Sawahan and Surabaya are generally very accommodating, as Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country. Most local eateries and restaurants will clearly indicate if their food is Halal. Areas around mosques and traditional markets are particularly good places to find authentic Halal Indonesian cuisine. When in doubt, it's always polite to ask, and most vendors will be happy to clarify. The abundance of Halal food ensures that Muslim travellers from the Philippines and other regions can dine with confidence and enjoy the local flavours.

Dining in Sawahan offers a wide range of price points, making it accessible for all budgets. Street food can be incredibly affordable, with meals often costing less than ₱ 50, equivalent to about USD 1. For mid-range dining at local restaurants, expect to pay between ₱ 100 to ₱ 300 per person. Upscale dining in hotels or more established restaurants can range from ₱ 400 upwards. This affordability is a significant draw for international travellers, especially those from North America and Europe, where similar quality dining experiences would be considerably more expensive.

Practical dining tips for Sawahan include embracing the local meal times, which typically involve lunch around noon and dinner from 7 PM onwards. Tipping is not mandatory in most local eateries, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount for excellent service is appreciated. When ordering, be prepared for a variety of spice levels; it's often wise to ask for 'tidak pedas' (not spicy) if you have a low tolerance. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can enhance your experience and show respect for local customs.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Sawahan

Navigating the cultural landscape of Sawahan requires an awareness of local customs and etiquette, which can differ significantly from what international visitors might be accustomed to. Understanding these nuances is key to fostering positive interactions and ensuring a respectful and enjoyable trip. While Indonesians are generally known for their hospitality, being mindful of local traditions will greatly enhance your experience and prevent unintentional faux pas.

When visiting landmarks like Indomaret Dukuh Kepang or Kantor Kramat Djati Arjuna, it's important to observe local behaviour. Dress modestly, especially when visiting any place of worship or more traditional areas; covering shoulders and knees is generally advisable. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, particularly in more rural or traditional settings. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. Avoid public displays of affection, as these are generally frowned upon.

Safety in Sawahan is comparable to many large urban centres. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, often more so than unmetered taxis. It's always a good idea to have a local SIM card for easy communication and access to navigation apps.

In case of emergencies, the general police number in Indonesia is 110. For medical assistance, dial 118. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force in Sawahan itself, local police are usually helpful. For Filipino travellers, it's wise to know the location of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which is typically in Jakarta, and to have contact details for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) should any issues arise. Considering travel insurance is also a prudent step for any international trip.

Getting to Sawahan and Getting Around

Reaching Sawahan from the Philippines is a straightforward process, primarily involving flights into Surabaya's main airport, Juanda International Airport (SUB). Travellers departing from Manila (NAIA/MNL), Cebu (CEB), or other major Philippine hubs will typically find connecting flights, as direct routes to Surabaya are less common. The journey usually involves a layover in a major Asian hub like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hong Kong. Flight durations can range from approximately 6 to 10 hours, depending on the layover.

The cost of flights from the Philippines to Surabaya can vary significantly based on the season, airline, and how far in advance you book. For budget-conscious travellers, booking in advance and being flexible with travel dates can yield fares starting from around ₱ 8,000 to ₱ 15,000 for a round trip. Once you land at Juanda International Airport (SUB), the most convenient way to reach Sawahan is by taxi or ride-sharing service, which will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic conditions, and cost around ₱ 300 to ₱ 500.

Getting around within Sawahan and the wider Surabaya area offers several options for international visitors. The most popular and convenient method is using ride-hailing apps such as Grab, which operates extensively in the city and offers both car and motorcycle taxi services. These are generally affordable and provide a safe way to navigate. For those who prefer public transport, Surabaya has a bus system, though it can be less intuitive for tourists. Local 'angkot' (minibuses) also ply various routes but are best suited for the more adventurous traveller.

The best time to visit Sawahan, and Surabaya in general, is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions. The wet season, from October to April, brings higher rainfall, though showers are often brief and heavy. Hotel prices may be slightly higher during peak tourist seasons or major Indonesian holidays, so booking in advance is recommended for the best rates and availability.

Before you depart for Sawahan, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels may accept credit cards, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller vendors and local transport. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is easy and affordable, providing you with data for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and the Grab app for transportation.

Visa Information for Indonesia (Sawahan)

For Philippine passport holders planning a visit to Sawahan, Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is a crucial first step. Fortunately, Indonesia offers visa-free entry for citizens of the Philippines for short stays. This means that Filipino travellers can enter Indonesia, including Surabaya where Sawahan is located, for tourism or business purposes without the need to apply for a visa in advance. The standard length of stay permitted under this visa-free arrangement is typically 30 days.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders is generally straightforward, but it's essential to meet certain conditions. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Indonesia and should have sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. You will also need to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay. While no specific fee is associated with this visa-free entry, immigration officials may request to see these documents.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, policies can change, and it is always recommended for travellers to verify the latest visa regulations with the official Indonesian immigration authorities or the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines before making travel arrangements. This proactive approach ensures that you are fully prepared and avoid any last-minute complications. Confirming your entry status before you book flight tickets is a prudent measure for all international travel.
