The staff was responsive and very welcoming. The layout was incredibly perfect. The lobby, with live music from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, was truly delightful. I waited for my partner for two hours without realizing it. The comfortable chairs and elegant tables, coupled with the live music and the singer's voice were so pleasant, it felt like watching live jazz with a VVIP ticket. Please help Novotel stay in business!

Got a really cheap room even though I booked last minute. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The motorcycle parking area is quite open, but security guards are always on duty, so it's quite safe. By the way, the room was also really nice, I didn't expect much!! I only found out about this hotel because it was my first time trying it. I'll definitely come back here next time I'm in Pontianak 👍

More about hotels in Siantan

Siantan: A Gateway to Indonesian Charm and Value

For travellers from the Philippines seeking a distinct international experience without venturing too far, Siantan presents a compelling Indonesian adventure. This region offers a unique blend of cultural immersion and accessible exploration, setting it apart from more frequented Southeast Asian destinations. Unlike the bustling metropolises or the well-trodden tourist trails, Siantan provides a more authentic glimpse into Indonesian life, where local traditions are readily encountered and the pace of discovery feels more personal. It’s a place where the warmth of Indonesian hospitality is palpable, inviting visitors to engage with the local way of life.

Siantan itself is not a monolithic entity but a mosaic of diverse neighbourhoods, each contributing to the region's multifaceted appeal. From the commercial buzz of Pontianak City Center to the more laid-back atmosphere of South Pontianak and Southeast Pontianak, and the developing areas like Kubu Raya, the choice of where to base yourself significantly shapes your journey. Understanding these distinctions is key to unlocking the full potential of Siantan, ensuring your accommodation aligns with your desired travel rhythm and interests, whether you seek vibrant city life or tranquil retreats.

The economic landscape of Siantan offers a significant draw for international visitors, particularly those from markets accustomed to higher travel costs. With average hotel prices hovering around ₱1,500 per night, this translates to approximately $25 USD, offering exceptional value for money. This affordability extends across various accommodation types and dining experiences, making Siantan an attractive destination for budget-conscious travellers from the United States, Europe, and India, allowing for extended stays or more exploration within a set budget.

The accommodation spectrum in Siantan is broad, catering to a wide array of preferences and budgets. From well-regarded establishments like Lim Pak Kung, known for its convenient amenities, to the functional offerings at PLTG MPP Pontianak, the region ensures that finding a suitable place to stay is straightforward. For those ready to plan their trip, exploring these options and using platforms like Traveloka to book hotel accommodations is the first step towards an enriching Siantan experience.

Siantan appeals to a diverse range of international travellers. For Americans and Europeans, it offers a chance to explore a less commercialized facet of Southeast Asia, with opportunities for cultural discovery and experiencing local life. Indian travellers will find familiar culinary influences and a welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the advantage of affordable travel and accommodation. While direct connections might be less common for African travellers, Siantan's position within Indonesia makes it an accessible and rewarding addition to a broader regional itinerary.

Best Areas to Stay in Siantan

Siantan, while a region rather than a single city, presents a fascinating array of neighbourhoods, each offering a distinct flavour and set of experiences for international visitors. Choosing your base wisely is paramount, as it will influence your daily explorations, access to local culture, and overall immersion into the Indonesian way of life. From the bustling commercial hubs to more tranquil pockets, understanding these areas will help you tailor your Siantan adventure to your preferences.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Siantan

Siantan's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of Indonesia's rich gastronomic heritage, offering a delightful array of flavours that will captivate international palates. A must-try is the 'Gulai Ikan', a rich and aromatic fish curry, often found in local eateries and markets, showcasing the region's fresh seafood. Another local specialty is 'Soto Ayam', a flavourful chicken soup that varies slightly from region to region, but always offers comforting warmth. For those seeking something unique, 'Sambal' – a spicy chili paste – is a ubiquitous condiment that adds a kick to almost any dish, with local variations offering distinct heat levels and ingredients.

For an authentic taste of Siantan, exploring its bustling markets and street food stalls is essential. Areas like Pontianak City Center are known for their vibrant food scenes, offering a wide variety of local delicacies. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, and most eateries adhere to Halal practices. Look for the 'Halal' sign or inquire with vendors; many will readily confirm the preparation methods and ingredients.

The affordability of dining in Siantan is a significant advantage for international visitors. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱30-₱60 (approximately $0.50-$1 USD) per dish, offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱150-₱300 (approximately $2.50-$5 USD) for a full meal, while more upscale dining experiences might range from ₱500-₱1,000 (approximately $8-$17 USD) per person. This makes Siantan a very budget-friendly destination for food lovers from the US, Europe, and India.

When dining in Siantan, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to accept offered food. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries or street food stalls, but a small gratuity may be appreciated in higher-end restaurants. It's common to eat with the right hand, especially when served rice dishes. Observing how locals interact and order can provide valuable insights into dining etiquette, ensuring a respectful and enjoyable culinary journey.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Siantan

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enriching visit to Siantan. Indonesians, in general, are known for their politeness and hospitality. A common greeting involves a slight nod and a smile. When visiting homes or more traditional establishments, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's advisable to maintain a more reserved demeanour in public spaces to avoid causing discomfort.

When exploring Siantan, particularly its religious sites or more traditional areas, dressing modestly is important. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees. While major tourist areas might be more relaxed, adhering to a respectful dress code shows consideration for local culture. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially in more rural or traditional settings. Queueing is generally orderly, and patience is appreciated.

Siantan offers a generally safe environment for international travellers, but standard precautions should always be taken. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. It's advisable to have offline maps downloaded and to keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible on your phone.

For any urgent situations, the local emergency number for police and ambulance services in Indonesia is 112. Filipino travellers should be aware of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in emergencies. It is also recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events. Staying informed about any travel advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step.

Getting to Siantan and Getting Around

Reaching Siantan from the Philippines is typically achieved through flights connecting via major hubs in Southeast Asia. While direct flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to the primary airport serving Siantan, Supadio International Airport (PNK) in Pontianak, are uncommon, connecting flights are readily available. These journeys usually involve a layover in cities like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with total travel times ranging from 6 to 12 hours, depending on the connection. Estimated costs for round-trip tickets can vary significantly, but budget around ₱15,000 to ₱30,000 for an economy class seat, especially when booked in advance. For those looking to secure the best fares, using Traveloka to book flight tickets is highly recommended.

Once you arrive at Supadio International Airport (PNK), you have several options to reach your accommodation in Siantan. Airport taxis are available, offering a direct and convenient, albeit slightly more expensive, transfer. Ride-hailing services like Grab are also a popular and often more economical choice, with designated pick-up points outside the arrivals hall. For those staying in the city centre or nearby districts, the journey typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Within Siantan itself, Grab and other local ride-sharing apps are the most practical ways to navigate between neighbourhoods, alongside traditional taxis.

The best time to visit Siantan generally aligns with the dry season, which typically runs from June to September. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. However, this period also coincides with peak tourist season, meaning higher hotel prices and larger crowds. For travellers seeking a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of April-May and October-November can be excellent choices, offering pleasant conditions at more moderate rates.

Before embarking on your journey to Siantan, a few pre-departure preparations are advisable. Ensure you have Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) on hand for immediate expenses upon arrival, though major hotels and some establishments accept credit cards. Exchanging currency at the airport or in the city centre is straightforward. Consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport for affordable data and calls, which will be invaluable for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, a translation app, and your preferred ride-hailing service.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Siantan, which is located in Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically for tourism purposes, for up to 30 days. This allows for a convenient and straightforward entry process, making Siantan an accessible destination. It is always recommended to confirm the latest visa policies with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as regulations can be subject to change.

The application process for visa-free entry is minimal for Philippine passport holders. Upon arrival at the Indonesian port of entry, immigration officials will typically stamp your passport, indicating the duration of your permitted stay. It is essential to have a passport with at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry and to be able to present proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free facility, ensure you meet all immigration requirements to avoid any issues.

While visa-free entry is a significant advantage, it is always prudent for travellers to verify the most up-to-date information directly with Indonesia's official immigration authority or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. This proactive step ensures that you are fully prepared and aware of any potential changes or specific requirements that may apply to your travel plans. Confirming your entry status before booking flights is a recommended practice to guarantee a smooth and hassle-free journey to Siantan.
