The hotel staff was very friendly. I arrived at 12 noon, not yet check-in time, but was allowed to check in early. This alone is remarkable, as not all hotels allow this. The location is also very strategic, right in the city center.

REZZA RAHDIAN
Part of my heart is left in Kalimaya. Left with the cool sea breeze, the sound of the waves on the beach, and the sunrise that always wakes me up every morning. I came to Poja Nae for business. Because it is close to the work location, my team and I chose to stay at Kalimaya. The first day we arrived, we were greeted by the very friendly Hotel Manager and during the few days we were here, he was always a close conversation partner. I was very impressed. From the swimming pool area, we can see the open sea with the Komodo island cluster and Gili Banta across from it. Very enchanting. The beach is very beautiful, there we can swim, play kayak, even snorkel to see the underwater life. Or you can be like me, who just chooses to read a book and take a nap under a coconut tree. Maybe one day, I will come back here to enjoy the diving experience that I didn't have time to do due to time constraints. See you again!

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Wera

Wera's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of Indonesian flavours, offering a delightful journey for the palate. Central to the local diet are dishes that showcase fresh, regional ingredients, often prepared with a unique blend of spices that define Indonesian cuisine. Visitors should seek out specialties like *Ikan Bakar* (grilled fish), a staple given Wera's proximity to coastal areas, and various *Nasi Goreng* (fried rice) variations, each with its own local twist. For those interested in authentic tastes, exploring local eateries and markets is key to discovering the true essence of Wera's food scene.

For an authentic dining experience in Wera, exploring the local markets and smaller eateries is highly recommended. Areas like West Rasanae and Bima are known for their bustling food stalls and warungs (small local restaurants) where one can sample a wide array of dishes at affordable prices. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most establishments adhere to Halal practices. Always look for the Halal logo or inquire with the establishment to ensure compliance with dietary needs.

The cost of dining in Wera offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and meals at local warungs can range from ₱50 to ₱150 (approximately $1–$3 USD), providing an incredibly budget-friendly way to experience local flavours. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200 to ₱500 (approximately $4–$10 USD) per person for a full meal, which is considerably less than what travellers from the US or Europe might expect. This affordability allows visitors to indulge in a variety of culinary experiences without straining their budget.

When dining in Wera, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meal times are generally flexible, with lunch being the main meal of the day. Tipping is not always customary in smaller establishments, but a small gratuity of 5-10% is appreciated in more formal restaurants. It's polite to use your right hand for eating and handling food. Observing how locals interact and eat can provide valuable insights into etiquette, ensuring a respectful and enjoyable dining experience that reflects the hospitality of Wera.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Wera

Understanding local customs is paramount for a respectful and enriching visit to Wera. While generally welcoming, Indonesians, including those in Wera, value politeness and modesty. Greetings are important; a simple "Selamat pagi" (good morning) or "Terima kasih" (thank you) goes a long way. When visiting religious sites or more traditional communities, dressing modestly – covering shoulders and knees – is expected. Be mindful of personal space and avoid overly familiar physical contact with strangers, especially between opposite genders.

In Wera, as in many parts of Indonesia, respecting local traditions is key. When visiting mosques or temples, ensure you are appropriately dressed and always ask permission before taking photographs of people or sacred sites. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon. Queueing is not always strictly observed, so patience is often required. For Filipino travellers, many of these customs will feel familiar, but it's always wise to remain observant and respectful of the local way of life to ensure positive interactions.

Practical safety in Wera involves standard precautions applicable to most travel destinations. It's advisable to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets. While petty theft can occur, Wera is generally considered a safe region. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are often available and provide a reliable and transparent way to get around. If using local taxis, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand. Carrying a local SIM card with data can be invaluable for navigation and communication.

For any emergencies in Wera, local police and ambulance services are available. It is crucial for Filipino travellers to know the contact details for the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in critical situations. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) often issues travel advisories, which should be checked before departure. Having comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events is highly recommended to ensure peace of mind throughout your journey in Wera.

Getting to Wera and Getting Around

Reaching Wera from the Philippines typically involves flights from major hubs like Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB), usually with one or more layovers in major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta or Denpasar. Direct flights are uncommon, and the total travel time can range from 10 to 20 hours, depending on the connection. The nearest major airport serving the Wera region is likely Bima Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin Airport (BMU). From BMU, travellers can arrange a taxi or pre-booked transfer to their accommodation in Wera, a journey that usually takes around 1-2 hours. For those planning their trip, it's essential to book flight tickets well in advance to secure the best fares.

Navigating Wera and its surrounding areas is an adventure in itself, offering a glimpse into local transportation culture. While public buses and minivans (*angkot*) serve some routes, they can be confusing for first-time visitors. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are more convenient options for tourists, offering fixed or metered fares and greater comfort. Renting a motorbike is also popular for independent exploration, but requires caution due to local traffic conditions. For longer distances or trips to more remote attractions, hiring a car with a driver is a practical, albeit more expensive, choice.

The best time to visit Wera generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, typically from May to September. During these months, the weather is characterized by sunshine and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region's natural beauty. While this period is considered peak season, leading to potentially higher hotel prices and more crowds, the pleasant climate is a significant draw. Travelling during the shoulder months of April or October can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer tourists, providing a more relaxed experience.

Before embarking on your journey to Wera, a few pre-departure preparations are essential. Ensure you have local currency, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), readily available, though major hotels may accept credit cards. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is highly recommended for data access, enabling the use of navigation and communication apps. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps. Beyond your passport, ensure you have copies of important documents and any necessary travel insurance details.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Wera, which is in Indonesia, the visa requirements are straightforward. Indonesia offers visa-free entry for short stays for citizens of the Philippines. This typically allows for a stay of up to 30 days, intended for tourism or business purposes. It is crucial to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your intended date of entry into Indonesia. While visa-free, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with official sources before your travel dates.

The process for visa-free entry involves presenting your valid Philippine passport upon arrival at Indonesian immigration. You may be asked to show proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free facility, any extensions or stays beyond the permitted duration will incur fees and require application through the Indonesian immigration authorities. It is advisable to have hotel bookings confirmed for the duration of your stay.

While Indonesia offers visa-free entry for Philippine citizens for short stays, policies can change. It is strongly recommended that all travellers verify the most current visa regulations and entry requirements directly with the official Indonesian immigration authority or the Embassy of Indonesia in the Philippines before booking flights or making travel arrangements. This proactive step ensures a smooth and hassle-free entry into Indonesia for your visit to Wera.
