My first experience staying at Suites Margonda in the Suites One Bedroom Double room.. Very impressive.. With a price under 500 thousand.. got a standard room.. What was surprising for that price was getting 1 living room with AC and TV facilities.. And for the room, it got the same facilities too.. namely AC and television.. plus free breakfast for 2 people.. The hotel service from the receptionist was very helpful.. Thank you for the service...

During my stay at Hotel Bumi Wiyata, specifically in Suite No. 320 from Wednesday, July 22, 2026 to Wednesday, July 29, 2026, it was quite comfortable and quite pleasant. The room is spacious, divided into 2 rooms, the bedroom and the living room are both spacious. Also, the living room can be used for work when we have to make offers and reports with colleagues, because the table and chairs are quite supportive. Because I stayed there only for work, so I also did not pay attention to other facilities. What is important for me, during my stay at Hotel Bumi Wiyata, the facilities are quite supportive for my personal and work, as well as for meetings with relations related to my work, and at Hotel Bumi Wiyata the facilities are quite supportive. Thank you Hotel Bumi Wiyata. God willing, I will go to Depok again and most likely for accommodation needs, Hotel Bumi Wiyata will be the one I consider next!

For travellers from the Philippines, seeking a destination that offers a different pace and unique experiences within Indonesia, Depok provides an intriguing option. It’s a city where modern development meets traditional roots, creating a fascinating landscape for exploration.

The city’s character is not monolithic; it’s a mosaic of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own personality and appeal. From the bustling commercial hub of Margonda to the more tranquil residential areas like Cinere, and the developing zones around Cimanggis, Depok offers a spectrum of environments. Understanding these variations is key for any international visitor, as choosing where to base yourself can significantly shape your entire travel experience, influencing everything from your daily commute to the local flavours you encounter.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Depok

Depok's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of Indonesia's rich gastronomic heritage, offering a delightful array of flavours that will captivate international visitors. From the ubiquitous Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Satay (grilled skewers) to more regional specialties, the city provides an authentic taste of Indonesian cuisine. For travellers from the Philippines, exploring Depok's food scene is an adventure in itself, with many dishes offering familiar yet distinct profiles, often prepared with a unique local touch that sets them apart.

The city's food scene is best explored through its diverse dining establishments, ranging from bustling street food stalls to casual warungs (small eateries) and more formal restaurants. Areas like Margonda are packed with options, from fast-food chains to local cafes serving Indonesian comfort food. For those seeking Halal options, which are abundant throughout Depok given Indonesia's Muslim majority, looking for restaurants displaying "Halal" certification or frequented by locals is a reliable approach. Exploring local markets also offers a chance to sample fresh produce and regional snacks.

Dining in Depok offers exceptional value for international travellers. Street food and casual warungs can provide a hearty meal for as little as ₱50 to ₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD). Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200 to ₱500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal, a fraction of what comparable dining experiences would cost in many Western countries. Even upscale dining remains relatively affordable, making Depok an attractive destination for food enthusiasts on a budget.

When dining in Depok, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to accept offered food. While tipping is not mandatory in most casual eateries, a small gratuity of 5-10% is appreciated in more formal restaurants. It's common to use the right hand for eating, especially with rice dishes, though cutlery is widely available. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering can also be helpful and is often met with appreciation by local vendors.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Depok

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching visit to Depok. As in much of Indonesia, politeness and a gentle demeanour are highly valued. Greetings are important; a simple "Selamat pagi" (good morning) or "Terima kasih" (thank you) goes a long way. When visiting religious sites or more traditional areas, dressing modestly, covering shoulders and knees, is expected. Observing how locals interact can provide valuable insights into appropriate behaviour, ensuring you navigate social situations with grace.

At key locations like Pondok Cabe Airport (PCB) and Universitas Indonesia, maintaining respectful conduct is essential. While airports generally follow international norms, showing patience in queues and being mindful of noise levels are appreciated. At the university, respecting academic spaces and adhering to any posted rules regarding photography or entry into specific buildings will ensure a positive experience. These public spaces are often busy, and a calm, observant approach will help you blend in and avoid causing unintended offense.

Depok is generally a safe city for international travellers, but standard precautions should always be taken. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, often more so than unmetered taxis. Having offline maps and essential contact numbers readily accessible can also provide peace of mind during your explorations.

In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at 110. For medical assistance, contact the nearest hospital or ambulance service. While Depok is part of Indonesia, it's always wise for Filipino travellers to know the location of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, typically located in Jakarta, for any consular assistance. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover unforeseen medical expenses or other travel-related emergencies, ensuring a secure and worry-free trip.

Getting to Depok and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Depok involves flying into one of Jakarta's international airports, primarily Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Jakarta typically involve one stopover, with total travel times ranging from 7 to 12 hours, depending on the layover. While direct flights are rare, numerous airlines offer competitive fares, making the journey accessible. From CGK, Depok is approximately a 45-minute to 1.5-hour drive, depending on traffic conditions, and travellers can book flight tickets conveniently through Traveloka.

Navigating Depok itself is relatively straightforward, with a mix of public and private transportation options. TransJakarta buses and local angkots (minibuses) serve many routes, offering an economical way to travel, though they can be crowded. Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek are extremely popular and provide convenient car and motorcycle taxi services at reasonable prices, often more comfortable for international visitors. For longer distances or specific needs, metered taxis are also available, but it's advisable to ensure the meter is used.

The best time to visit Depok generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, from June to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for exploring the city and its surroundings. While this period can coincide with peak travel times for some international markets, Depok often remains less crowded than major tourist destinations. Shoulder seasons, such as April-May and October, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, potentially with more favourable hotel rates.

Before departing for Depok, ensure you have your passport with at least six months of validity remaining. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash for smaller vendors and local transport is essential. Downloading offline maps of Depok and essential apps like Grab or Gojek will be invaluable. A local SIM card, easily obtainable at the airport, will ensure you stay connected for navigation and communication.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Depok, Indonesia, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, usually up to 30 days, for tourism purposes. This allows for a convenient entry without the need for pre-application or visa on arrival fees. It is crucial, however, to always verify the latest immigration policies directly with official Indonesian government sources or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before your travel dates.

While visa-free entry is common, certain conditions apply. Your Philippine passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, and you may be required to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your visit. Although not always strictly checked for visa-free entries, having hotel bookings confirmed can also be beneficial. These requirements are standard for international travel and help ensure a smooth immigration process.

Given that immigration policies can be subject to change, it is strongly recommended that all travellers, especially those from the Philippines, confirm their specific visa requirements and entry regulations directly with the official Indonesian immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines well in advance of booking their flights. This proactive step ensures that you are fully prepared and can avoid any last-minute complications, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip to Depok.
