Run down. Two of the three leather chairs in the lobby had large holes where you sat. After living in Japan for 4 years and the memories I had (1989-1993), I felt it was intolerable for their usual standards.
High volume of budget travelers and constant activity in the lobby. Our rooms were sadly a disappointment in size and feel; it felt shabby and musty.
Our Japanese friend who accompanied us on this trip actually took our room in exchange as theirs was a corner unit with windows and well light, while ours was similar to the feeling of being in a closet.
Being from Oahu and growing up with an economy dependent on tourism it was a familiar feeling of feeling overwhelmed at certain attractions with large tourist buses and having to wait in long lines for everyday services. With this in mind, the Japanese do use on service is what keeps quaint towns like Otaru vibrant and enjoyable. But we are in search of towns with heart and soul and not overrun with tourists.

I was not prepared to stay in a room with cracked sink, old and dirty carpet and dirty walls. I contacted the front-desk and requested to change the room. I was told that most of the rooms were the same condition. Sure enough, I checked another available room, it was the same. One the positive side, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was amazing. It was definitely worth the money if you don't mind a less than desirable room.

It would be a lot more efficient if the staff instead of standing by the check in machine instructing us each step but keying in the required info for us. He didn’t provide us any info about the hotel facilities and the operating hours. I had to look them up.

I frequently booked and stayed in Dormy Inn with breakfast included during past visits to Japan. I booked one night in Dormy Inn Tomakomai and 2 nights in Otaru for this trip. I was sure the I booked rooms inclusive of breakfast because my wife and I like the breakfast but we were told breakfast is not included. Don’t understand what happened. Anyway, we paid for the breakfast in Tomakomai and not eat breakfast in Otaru.

My first impression was of a cheap tourist hotel. Indeed the room was small, a bit Spartan and well worn. However, the public spaces are excellent, in particular the hot springs public bath was great. They have free washing machines including soap (200 yen for dryer), free ramen service in the evening and free coffee in the lobby ( in addition to coffee on the room). Location is good, next to main train station, and a reasonable walk to the local sites.
