Discover Shikoku: Japan's Undiscovered Island Gem for Filipino Travellers

Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands, offers a refreshing departure from the bustling metropolises of Tokyo and Osaka, presenting a more serene and authentic Japanese experience. For Filipino travellers seeking a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and unique cultural encounters, Shikoku stands out as a compelling destination. Unlike the well-trodden paths, this island invites exploration with its ancient pilgrimage routes, dramatic coastlines, and vibrant local festivals, providing a distinct flavour of Japan that resonates with those looking for something beyond the ordinary. Its charm lies in its accessibility and its ability to offer a profound connection to traditional Japanese life.

The island's diverse geography translates into a varied travel experience across its prefectures. From the historic castle town of Matsuyama in Ehime to the lively streets of Kochi-shi, the spiritual heart of Tokushima-shi, and the artistic hub of Takamatsu in Kagawa, each area offers a unique atmosphere. Further afield, Uwajima presents a rugged coastal charm, Miyoshi-shi boasts breathtaking river valleys, and Naruto is famed for its spectacular whirlpools. Understanding these regional differences, from the bustling city centres to the tranquil countryside, is key to crafting an itinerary that perfectly suits your travel style and interests.

With a starting price of approximately ₱ 1,264.24 per night and an impressive average review score of 8.3 from over 192,540 reviews, Shikoku presents exceptional value for international travellers. This affordability, combined with its wealth of attractions, makes it an attractive option for those from the US, Europe, India, and Africa looking to experience Japan without the premium price tag often associated with more popular destinations. The island offers a genuine taste of Japanese culture and hospitality at a cost that is accessible to a wider range of budgets.

The accommodation landscape in Shikoku mirrors its diverse appeal, offering options for every preference and budget. For instance, the Candeo Hotels Matsuyama Okaido provides a comfortable and well-equipped stay, while the ANA Crowne Plaza MATSUYAMA by IHG offers a more upscale experience with excellent amenities. These examples highlight the range available, from reliable mid-range hotels to more luxurious establishments, ensuring that travellers can find the perfect base for their Shikoku adventure. You can easily book hotel accommodations that fit your needs and budget.

Shikoku is an ideal destination for a variety of international travellers. US travellers might appreciate its off-the-beaten-path appeal and opportunities for outdoor activities. European visitors, often drawn to history and culture, will find the ancient temples, samurai districts, and traditional arts captivating. Indian travellers can enjoy the unique culinary experiences and the island's natural beauty, often finding the prices more accessible than mainland Japan. For travellers from Africa, Shikoku offers a glimpse into a different yet equally fascinating Asian culture, with a welcoming atmosphere and rich traditions.

Shikoku's culinary landscape is a delightful exploration of fresh, regional ingredients and time-honoured Japanese cooking techniques. The island is particularly celebrated for its seafood, owing to its extensive coastline along the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Sanuki Udon from Kagawa Prefecture is a national favourite, known for its firm, chewy texture. In Kochi, katsuo no tataki (seared bonito) is a must-try, often served with garlic and soy sauce. Ehime is famous for its sea bream (tai) and citrus fruits like mikan, while Tokushima offers local specialties such as sudachi, a small, tart citrus fruit used extensively in its cuisine.

Exploring Shikoku's food scene is an adventure in itself, with diverse dining options available across its prefectures. In Kochi-shi, the Hirome Market is a bustling hub where you can sample various local dishes, including the famous katsuo no tataki, in a lively, communal atmosphere. Matsuyama offers a range of dining experiences, from traditional izakayas to restaurants serving fresh seafood. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified restaurants might require some research, especially outside major cities; however, many establishments can accommodate dietary needs if informed in advance, and options like vegetable-based dishes or seafood are generally safe bets.

Navigating dining etiquette in Shikoku is straightforward for most international visitors. Tipping is not customary in Japan; excellent service is standard. It's polite to say "Itadakimasu" before eating and "Gochisosama deshita" after finishing your meal. When dining at a restaurant, wait to be seated, and avoid standing in doorways or blocking aisles. Many restaurants have a small dish for soy sauce; use it sparingly. Slurping noodles, especially ramen and udon, is considered a sign of enjoyment and is perfectly acceptable.

When using public transport, it's customary to queue orderly and avoid loud conversations or phone calls. Offering a small gift, known as 'omiyage', is a common practice when visiting someone's home or if you've travelled from afar.

When visiting popular sites like the Naruto Whirlpools or exploring areas around Matsuyama Airport (MYJ), maintaining respectful behaviour is important. While photography is usually permitted, always check for signs indicating restrictions, especially inside temples or private establishments. At natural attractions, adhere to marked paths to ensure safety and preserve the environment.
