This was our first time at a ryokan and our stay was the highlight of our 25 day trip to Japan. Great customer service from staff. Food was delicious (dinner and breakfast) and very accommodating on diet restrictions. They provided shuttle from Yudanaka Station and Snow Monkey Park. I would highly recommend them if staying in Nagano. Arigato Gozaimasu (Thank you) Ryokan Biyunoyado for a lovely stay.

The staff and cleanliness of the hotel was great. However the property is quite dated (there was a little bit of musty smell) around the room and corridors. The food experience was good although I am not sure if worth the price. Overall we had a good stay but I may not stay again.

The staff at the property were amazing. So very helpful and humble people. As a westerner I had always stayed at Marriott properties in Japan and to experience Japanese culture we decided to stay at a Rayokan. The Japanese food was very tasty and very elegantly presented. The Onsen bath was very nice with a wonderful view over the city. If you want to experience Japanese culture in a mountain setting, this is the place.

- arranged pick up did not arrive on time - staff who saw to arrangement was clueless or at least no apology was made by her - did not feel the usual Japanese etiquettes whether on check in, meal services etc. General feeling is that the ryokan is understaffed - no towels provided at the onsen, have to bring and reuse towels from room - meals were ok, not wow - position of heater over the bed rest was awkward, too stuffy to sleep

I had read previous reviews (as you do) before we went to the Biyunoyado and was happy to see it score so well but i was still pleasantly surprised with the place. From the moment we arrived the staff were lovely to the very moment we left, we decided to make the short walk back to the train station ourselves to stretch the legs before the train journey to sendai and we had one of the staff run over to ask if we needed a lift and we were also being waved off by two of the others. The Onsen are lovely, it's nice that they switch round so that you can enjoy both of the rooms, both are lovely so either way you are not hard done to! We also decided to rent the private onsen on the roof for the 40 minutes and i'm really glad we did, it was really relaxing and it was nice to have the time to ourselves and for such a small cost it's such a bargain! There's a free shuttle to the snow monkeys which is worth doing as the walk wouldn't be great, and we found the staff so welcoming and helpful, it really seemed like they were happy to help. We also decided to have the Japanese breakfast instead of the Western and i'm glad we did as it really enabled us to enjoy the full traditional experience, I can understand that it may not be for everyone but I would really urge anyone to give it a go. We stayed for 2 nights after doing the Magome to Tsumago Nakasendo highway and i honestly couldn't think of a better way to relax or rave about it more!

It feels that the hotel really tries to give the most authentic Ryokan experience, which is great! The staff were really helpful. They will pick you up from the train station for free, it is only an 8 min walk but handy for luggage. You can ask the tourist information desk in the station to call them if you don't want to make an expensive mobile phone call. They drove us to the monkey park for free, which is also walkable if you prefer. The rooms are clean and spacious with an excellent view. I am no expert but the rooms are authentic Ryokan style with tatami matting, Japanese style futons and a green tea set. There are Yukatas provided for wearing to dinner. We went half-board (I'm not sure if you can do anything else) and they provide a very authentic Japanese dinner. I am open minded about food and not fussy and I had spent the previous two months in Japan eating Japanese food. However, the dinner was challenging for a western palate (you do not get to chose what you have for dinner). The food seemed to be high quality and we were glad to have the opportunity to immerse ourselves more into Japanese culture. We chose the western-style breakfast which was fine.

We had a very enjoyable experience at our first traditional Ryokan in Japan. The staff goes out of their way to ensure that guests are getting the most out of their stay. For us, an Australian English-speaking staff member named Mitch was very helpful in making sure we were taking care of. He mad sure we had meals ready at the correct times and explained previously unfamiliar procedures at this style of accommodation. He also helped us plan some local activities during our two-night stay. Our favorite parts of our stay in Yamanouchi were the snow monkeys, the private rooftop onsen, and the dining experience. The free shuttle service to the monkey park was a great convenience, though we elected to walk back to experience some of the local flavor of Yamanouchi (which we found really cool, despite many other reviews describing the town as depressing... albeit the town was very quiet while we were there). The rooftop onsen at Biyunoyado is totally worth the nominal fee... we used it twice and it was a comfortable way to experience an onsen. Finally, the food at Biyunoyado was anazing.... a really cool way to experience a broad range of traditional Japanese foods. If we return to Japan in the winter, we'd absolutely return to Ryokan Biyunoyado in Yamanouchi!

This place has the most remarkable service we had ever experienced. Even though we missed a train and had to arrive past midnight through taking a taxi from Nagano station, when we arrived, the staff woke up to greet us and give us our fresh dinner bento boxes. The room was beautiful and they offered free shuttles to the monkey park, and had amazing views at breakfast and in the lobby of the hokkaido mountains! It was amazing, truly incredible hotel experience and the best I've ever had.

The included dinner and breakfast were wonderful, even if you didn't like some of the courses, though I liked all of them. Getting to pick and cook your own mushrooms and having other things heated at the table was a nice touch. This was my first stay at a Ryokan, so it was a different experience for me. We slept on mats which were very comfortable and the room very clean. The public bathing area was clean and well supplied, though a little to stuffy for me. We also used the private bath on the roof which was great, even on the col night we were there. Nice contrast between the hot water and cool breeze. We were met at the train station, even without prior arrangement. Though the sign was in Japanese, one of the greeters at the station pointed it out for us. All the staff were very friendly and willing to help and helped make the enjoyable stay. At check in, meals and free transfer to the monkey park were organised, with minimum fuss. Loved the stay, didn't explore the area, as everything we needed was at the Ryokan (and on a limited time frame).
