overall, it was a pleasant stay. obviously, there is not many people during the time I check in, due to the CMCO here in Malaysia. room was nice. breakfast was superb. I love the nasi dagang very much. only the parking area may cause some issue, as you need to walk a little distance to reach hotel lobby. the rest is good. didn't go to the pool as I was on business trip alone..

More about hotels in Redang Island

Redang Island: Malaysia's Tropical Jewel for the Discerning International Traveller

For travellers from the Philippines seeking an escape that blends pristine natural beauty with accessible luxury, Redang Island in Malaysia presents a compelling proposition. Unlike the bustling metropolises or more developed tourist hubs, Redang offers a tranquil retreat where turquoise waters meet powdery white sands, creating an idyllic setting that feels a world away. It’s a destination that allows for genuine disconnection, a chance to recharge amidst some of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant marine life and lush tropical landscapes. This island destination provides a distinct Malaysian experience, focusing on natural wonders and laid-back island living.

The island itself is not a monolithic entity; rather, it’s a tapestry of experiences woven across its various locales. From the more developed areas that cater to a wider range of visitors to secluded coves offering ultimate privacy, Redang Island provides a spectrum of environments. Understanding these nuances, such as the difference between staying near the main ferry points versus seeking out a more remote resort, is key to tailoring your trip. Kuala Terengganu, the gateway city, also offers its own charm, providing a contrast to the island's serenity and serving as a crucial transit point.

With an average starting price of approximately ₱ 2,161.97 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.2 from over 3,700 guests, Redang Island stands out as a destination offering significant value for international travellers. For those accustomed to Western European or North American price points, the affordability of quality accommodation and activities here is a welcome surprise. Indian travellers, in particular, will find the cost-effective options and the ease of travel within Southeast Asia highly appealing, making it a feasible and rewarding international holiday.

The accommodation landscape on Redang Island is as diverse as its marine life, ranging from the exclusive luxury of The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort to the charming, family-oriented Peridot By The Sea @ Redang. These properties exemplify the island's commitment to providing memorable stays, whether you're seeking five-star pampering or a more intimate, boutique experience. For those ready to explore these options and secure their perfect island base, it's time to book hotel accommodations that promise relaxation and adventure.

Redang Island truly caters to a global audience. American travellers will appreciate the blend of adventure and relaxation, with ample opportunities for diving and snorkelling alongside serene beach lounging. European visitors might be drawn to the island's natural beauty and the chance to experience a different facet of Asian culture, with opportunities for cultural immersion in nearby Terengganu. African travellers, often seeking regional travel within Asia, will find Redang a convenient and visually stunning addition to their itinerary, offering a tropical escape that is both exotic and accessible.

Best Areas to Stay in Redang Island

Redang Island, while an island, offers distinct areas that cater to different travel preferences, much like a mainland city. For international visitors, understanding these nuances is crucial for crafting the ideal holiday. Whether you seek vibrant marine life right at your doorstep, a tranquil escape, or convenient access to transport hubs, choosing the right neighbourhood within Redang Island will significantly shape your overall experience, ensuring your stay aligns perfectly with your expectations for a Malaysian island adventure.

Redang Island (Main Tourist Beaches)

This is the heart of Redang Island's tourism, encompassing the most popular beaches and resorts. Here, you'll find a lively atmosphere with easy access to water sports, dive centres, and beachfront restaurants. It's an ideal base for travellers who want to be in the centre of the action, with plenty of opportunities for socialising and enjoying the classic island vibe. Many international visitors, particularly those from the US and Europe seeking a classic beach holiday, find this area perfectly suits their desires for sun, sand, and sea.

Within this area, you can easily access numerous snorkelling and diving excursions, with many resorts offering packages. The proximity to Redang Airport (RDN) is also a significant advantage, making transfers smoother. For those looking to explore beyond the immediate beach, opportunities to book attractions like island hopping tours or marine park visits are abundant. The range of dining options here also caters to international palates, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Teluk Kalong

Teluk Kalong offers a more serene and exclusive experience compared to the main tourist beaches. It's known for its quieter shores and a selection of resorts that provide a more intimate setting. This area is perfect for couples or travellers seeking a peaceful retreat away from the crowds, where the focus is on relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the island. Travellers from Europe and North America often gravitate towards Teluk Kalong for its tranquil ambiance and the promise of a more private island escape.

Accommodation here often includes resorts with private beach access and excellent snorkelling opportunities directly from the shore. While quieter, it still provides access to boat services for exploring other parts of the island or visiting the marine park. Dining options might be more limited to resort restaurants, but they often offer high-quality local and international cuisine. Getting to Teluk Kalong typically involves a short transfer from the main arrival points on the island, ensuring a smooth transition to this peaceful retreat.

Pasir Panjang

Pasir Panjang is a long stretch of beach that offers a good balance between accessibility and a relaxed atmosphere. It's home to a variety of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses to mid-range resorts, making it a popular choice for travellers of all budgets. This area is well-suited for backpackers and independent travellers, as well as families looking for a comfortable and convenient base. Indian travellers, often seeking good value and a lively yet manageable environment, find Pasir Panjang to be an excellent option.

This area provides easy access to local eateries, dive shops, and convenience stores, offering a more local feel than the more resort-centric areas. It's a great starting point for exploring the island's interior or arranging boat trips. The presence of various amenities means that most needs can be met without venturing far. Its location also offers reasonable access to transport links for onward travel or exploring nearby attractions, making it a practical choice for many international visitors.

Pulau Redang Marine Park Area

While not a residential area, the vicinity of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is a crucial zone for visitors interested in marine conservation and exceptional snorkelling and diving. Resorts located near or within the park boundaries offer unparalleled access to some of the best underwater ecosystems in Malaysia. This area is a draw for nature enthusiasts and divers from all over the world, including those from Africa who might be seeking unique wildlife encounters. Staying in this vicinity means prioritising the marine experience above all else.

The primary activity here is, of course, exploring the vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Many resorts in this zone are specifically geared towards divers and snorkellers, offering equipment rental and guided tours. While dining and other amenities might be concentrated within the resorts, the sheer quality of the natural attractions makes it a worthwhile consideration. Access to this area is typically via boat transfer, and it’s advisable to book accommodation in advance due to its popularity among eco-conscious travellers.

Kuala Terengganu (Mainland Gateway)

While not on Redang Island itself, Kuala Terengganu serves as the primary gateway and offers a different perspective for travellers. It provides a contrast to the island's tranquility with its urban amenities, cultural sites, and bustling markets. Staying here before or after your island trip allows for exploration of Terengganu's rich heritage and local life. This area is particularly appealing to European travellers interested in cultural immersion and experiencing a more authentic Malaysian city experience, offering a different pace before or after the island retreat.

Kuala Terengganu boasts attractions like the Crystal Mosque, Chinatown, and the vibrant Pasar Payang market. It's also where you'll find Redang Airport (RDN) and the ferry terminals for Redang Island. For travellers looking to explore the mainland's heritage, sample diverse local cuisine, and find a wider range of accommodation options, including budget-friendly hotels, this city is an excellent choice. It provides a convenient base for last-minute souvenir shopping or enjoying local delicacies before heading to the island.

For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward, as Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most establishments adhere to Halal practices. Look for the Halal certification mark or inquire with restaurant staff to ensure your dining preferences are met with confidence.

Dining in Redang Island offers excellent value, especially when compared to Western destinations. While high-end resorts might charge upwards of ₱ 4,000-₱ 6,000 for a multi-course meal, casual eateries and local restaurants offer delicious meals for as little as ₱ 300-₱ 600 per person. Street food and simple local dishes can be even more affordable, often costing less than ₱ 200. This makes Redang Island an attractive destination for travellers from the US, Europe, and India, offering a chance to savour authentic cuisine without excessive spending.

When dining on Redang Island, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often communal, with dishes shared among diners. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for exceptional service, typically around 10%. It's polite to use your right hand when eating or handling food, especially in more traditional settings. Be open to trying local specialties, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from your server. Understanding these nuances will ensure a more respectful and enjoyable culinary exploration of this Malaysian island.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Redang Island

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching visit to Redang Island. As part of Malaysia, the island observes Islamic traditions, meaning modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting villages or religious sites. While beach resorts are more relaxed, covering up when not on the beach or by the pool is a good practice. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. Greetings are typically warm; a smile and a polite "Selamat Pagi" (Good Morning) or "Terima Kasih" (Thank You) go a long way.

When visiting key landmarks like Redang Airport (RDN) or the Surau Redang Lagoon, adhering to specific etiquette is important. At the airport, general courtesy and patience are expected. For the Surau (prayer house), modest attire is essential – long sleeves, long trousers or skirts, and head coverings for women. Visitors should be mindful of prayer times and avoid disturbing worshippers. Photography is generally permitted in public areas, but always ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals, especially locals in traditional attire.

Safety in Redang Island is generally high, with a low crime rate, particularly in tourist areas. However, standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. For transportation, reliable options include resort-arranged transfers and local boat services. While ride-hailing apps like Grab are prevalent in mainland Malaysia, their availability on Redang Island itself can be limited; pre-arranged transfers or local taxis are often more practical. Always agree on a fare before starting your journey if a meter is not used.

For Filipino travellers, it's reassuring to know that emergency services are available. In case of urgent need, contact local police or ambulance services. The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is the primary point of contact for consular assistance, though it's wise to have their contact details handy. For health concerns, carrying a basic first-aid kit and ensuring you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies is highly recommended. Staying informed about any advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step.

Getting to Redang Island and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching the tropical shores of Redang Island involves a combination of flights and ferry transfers. The most common route from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) would be to fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) or Senai International Airport (JHB) in Johor Bahru, followed by a domestic flight to Redang Airport (RDN) or the nearest mainland airport, Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu.

Direct flights to RDN are less common and seasonal, so connecting via TGG is often more reliable. The total travel time can range from 6 to 10 hours, depending on layovers, with flight costs typically varying from ₱ 8,000 to ₱ 15,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time. It's advisable to book flight tickets well in advance for better rates.

Once you arrive at Redang Airport (RDN) or Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu, you'll need to make your way to the ferry terminal for the final leg to Redang Island. From TGG, a taxi or Grab ride to the jetty (usually Shahbandar Jetty) takes about 15-20 minutes. Ferry services to Redang Island operate frequently during the peak season (typically March to October) and take approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the ferry type and destination on the island. On Redang Island itself, getting around is primarily done via walking along the beaches, using resort shuttles, or hiring local boat taxis for inter-resort travel or island hopping.

The best time to visit Redang Island for international travellers, particularly those from the Philippines, is during the dry season, which generally runs from March to October. This period offers sunny skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving. The peak tourist season aligns with these months, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices, especially during school holidays in Malaysia and neighbouring countries. The monsoon season, from November to February, sees rough seas and many resorts closing, making travel difficult and less enjoyable.

Before embarking on your Redang Island adventure, a few pre-departure preparations are essential. Ensure you have sufficient Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for your expenses, though major resorts may accept credit cards. Having a local SIM card, easily obtainable at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or upon arrival in Kuala Terengganu, is highly recommended for communication and data access. Essential apps include offline maps, a translation app for basic Malay phrases, and ride-hailing apps if you plan to spend time on the mainland. Always carry your passport and any necessary travel documents.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a visit to Malaysia to experience the beauty of Redang Island, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. Malaysia offers visa-free entry for Filipino citizens for tourism purposes, allowing stays of up to 30 days. This makes planning a trip to Redang Island relatively easy, as no prior visa application is typically required. However, it is crucial to ensure your Philippine passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your visit.

The entry requirements at Malaysian immigration checkpoints, whether at an international airport or a ferry terminal, may include presenting your passport, a completed disembarkation card, and potentially showing your return flight booking and hotel reservations. While visa-free, immigration officers reserve the right to deny entry if they are not satisfied with the traveller's intentions or documentation. Therefore, having all necessary documents readily available, including details of your accommodation on Redang Island and your planned departure, is highly recommended to ensure a smooth immigration process.

While visa-free entry is standard, policies can change, and it is always prudent for travellers to verify the latest immigration regulations with the official website of the Malaysian Immigration Department or the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines before their departure. Confirming your entry status and any specific requirements before booking your flights and accommodation is a wise precaution. This proactive approach ensures that your journey to Redang Island is planned with the most current and accurate information, guaranteeing a hassle-free travel experience.
