Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from Manila, the most common and economical way to reach Baguio City is by bus. Several reputable bus lines, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate daily trips from terminals in Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically lasts between 6 to 8 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000, depending on the bus type (regular or executive). Booking your bus tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons, is recommended.

While there are no direct flights to Baguio City’s Loakan Airport due to runway limitations, you can book flight tickets to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can take a bus or van service to Baguio, which takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. This option might be faster if you find a good flight deal, but consider the additional travel time from the airport to Baguio.

For those driving from Manila, the primary route involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, followed by the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. The drive is scenic but can be long, taking around 5 to 6 hours without significant traffic. Be prepared for toll fees along the expressways.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, making it a popular destination regardless of the season. However, the coolest months are from December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 15 degrees Celsius. This period is considered peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year, and during the Panagbenga Festival in February, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The months from March to May constitute the dry season, with pleasant temperatures ideal for outdoor activities. This is another popular time for visitors seeking respite from the heat. From June to November, Baguio experiences its rainy season. While there can be frequent rainfall, the city is often less crowded, and accommodation rates may be more affordable. The lush greenery during this time is also quite beautiful.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late May or early June, or late November. You can still enjoy the cool air and explore the city’s attractions without the intense peak season rush.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering unique flavors influenced by its highland location and diverse culture. A must-try is the **Strawberry Taho**, a local twist on the classic Filipino snack. Instead of plain syrup, it’s made with fresh strawberry puree, offering a sweet and tangy flavor that perfectly complements the soft tofu and sago pearls. You can find vendors selling this refreshing treat in many parts of the city, especially near tourist spots.

Another local specialty is **Pinikpikan**, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This hearty soup involves a unique preparation method where the meat (usually chicken) is lightly beaten before cooking, which is believed to tenderize it and enhance its flavor. It’s often cooked with etag (smoked pork) and local vegetables, offering a rich and savory taste that’s deeply rooted in the region’s culinary heritage.

Don't leave Baguio without trying **Ube Jam** and **Strawberry Jam**. Baguio is famous for its fresh strawberries, and these jams are a delicious way to take a taste of the city home. They are perfect for spreading on toast or as a filling for pastries. Many local pasalubong shops offer these, often homemade and of excellent quality.

For a more substantial meal, sample **Smoked Meats** like smoked longganisa or smoked pork belly. The cool climate of Baguio lends itself well to preserving and preparing meats through smoking, resulting in a distinct, savory flavor. These are often served with rice or as part of a larger meal, providing a satisfying and authentic Cordilleran dining experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

When visiting Baguio City, it’s appreciated if you show respect for local customs. The Igorot people, comprising various ethnic groups, have rich traditions. A simple greeting and a polite demeanor go a long way. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas and during late hours. When visiting churches or cultural sites, dress modestly.

Safety in Baguio City is generally good, but like any urban area, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places like markets and bus terminals. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. It’s also helpful to have the contact numbers of your accommodation readily available.

For navigating the city and staying informed, several apps can be useful. Google Maps is essential for directions. Ride-hailing apps are available for convenient transport. Weather apps are helpful for tracking Baguio’s famously changeable weather. For local information and deals, the Traveloka app is indispensable for booking accommodations and activities.

Consider downloading apps for local bus companies if you plan extensive inter-city travel. Having a communication app like Messenger or WhatsApp is also crucial for staying in touch with friends and family. These digital tools can significantly enhance your travel experience and ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable trip in Baguio.

Because I am the only woman in the Forbes room, the staff moved me to the other room, the Smith room. They assured me that my belongings were safe and that no one would touch them when I arrived for the first time. A towel and other bathroom necessities are also provided right away. Every morning, the staff cleaned the room, including sweeping and garbage collection. Overall, 3BU's service exceeded my expectations, and because it was less expensive, it was well worth it.

Staff are very accommodating. We arrived at Baguio at 6 am but our check in time was 2pm. They allow us to leave our baggage in their locker (we provided the locks) and we were able to roam around the city before our check in time without big luggage with us. Same with our check out time. We check out around 12 nn but our departure time that day was 10pm, thankfully, they still allow us to leave our things in their locker without any additional fees. The place is also near Burnham and the night market, around 8-15 mins walking. There are near jeepney terminals near the place if you don't like to spend too much money on taxi. Around 5 mins walking to SM. There is only 1 common CR per room. When we arrived the place, the CR wasn't clean (especially the sink, and the trash bin is already full). They provided body towel, toothbrush, soap, and shampoo-conditioner. Food is not also allowed inside the room, but there is a alfresco mini dining place (you can't use it when it's raining, you'll get wet 😂). Overall, it was a nice place to stay. You can really have a good night sleep/a place to rest peacefully after the long day tour around.

The pods were really nice. The lighting and blankets inside the pods are so cozy and comfy. The towels were given to us after a day. So we couldn't bath for a day. Also, I think their shower heater has a set timer. We had to call the guard/receptionist to configure it. There's one small toilet each room. Whatever you do is pretty audible to whoever is in the room. Clean pods but the toilet was a bit too moldy. Toilet needs to be scrubbed clean. The pods become a tad bit warm when the aircon "cools off". I had to remove the blanket when it cools off because it's getting a little hot. Of course, pods are not for sensitive sleepers. Best for cheap stays and/or if you rent a whole room with your friends and family. Accessible too because it has a nice location. Value for money.

The hostel is strategically located at the heart of baguio. It 's near session rd, bus station and sm baguio. However, I had an unpleasant stay because when I went out for the night, the gate of the hostel was already locked, they did not give me any key or access so I can go in. I contacted the number of their attendant, but to my dismay, they did not reply. I even went to their main branch at bonifacio to get assistance but no one was to be found in their reception area. I had to book another hotel just to have the night pass by. All my things were in their hotel.

Accommodation is good, bed is comfortable, bathroom has water heater, dormtel is very near the bus station, stores, restaurants, Session Road, SM, banks, etc. But, everytime the bathroom is being used, water is leaking inside the room, at de Tavera room.
