In terms of ambiance, I can give it an excellent rating. Staff were very accommodating, especially Miss Phine. Rooms are clean, location is great because it's near Camp John Hay, and it has an excellent coffee shop also.

Location: Perfect. Because it's near Burnham Park, Good Taste restaurant, Foam Coffee, Harrison Street, Baguio Night Market, Session Road, Vizco's, Baguio Cathedral, sm baguio. Also, beside it, is a grocery store.💯. Food: Perfect. Because you can get as much as what you can consume. They served garlic rice, steamed rice, scrambled eggs, dried fish, hotdogs, pork steak, breads and jams, coffee, juice, salad and fruits.💯. Room: Good. Because I'm not sure if other parts of the room is clean. But definitely the bathroom needs to be scrubbed. The AC unit was loud from time to time. And, there's no room slippers provided. Also, they need to change their old towels, and their busted lights as well. Good thing their bed linens and comforters are clean. Staffs: Perfect. (Even if my request was not followed.) Front desk ladies were kind and accommodating. Every staff we see greets us politely.💯. Thank you, Hotel Veniz Burnham!

Baguio City Proper: The Philippines' Summer Capital for Global Explorers

Baguio City Proper, often hailed as the Philippines' Summer Capital, offers a refreshing escape from the tropical heat, presenting a unique allure for international travellers seeking a blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a cooler climate. Unlike the bustling metropolises or pristine beaches that define much of the archipelago, Baguio provides a distinct mountain retreat experience. Its pine-scented air, rolling hills, and vibrant local culture create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and exotic, making it a compelling destination for those looking to explore beyond the typical Southeast Asian itinerary.

The city's character is a fascinating mosaic, with each district offering a different facet of its charm. From the upscale ambiance of Greenwater Village to the historical resonance of the Rizal Monument Area, and the commercial pulse of Session Road Area, Baguio City Proper caters to diverse preferences. Travellers can find themselves amidst the lively markets of Abanao-Zandueta-Kayong-Chugum-Otek (AZKCO), the tranquil residential feel of Engineers' Hill, or the more laid-back vibe of Scout Barrio and General Emilio F. Aguinaldo. This internal variation ensures that where you choose to stay significantly shapes your entire Baguio experience.

For international visitors, Baguio City Proper presents exceptional value. With average nightly rates around ₱ 745.33, it stands as an accessible destination compared to many global mountain resorts. For instance, a comfortable stay can be secured for as little as ₱ 1,031.54 per night, offering a stark contrast to the prices travellers might expect in Europe or North America. This affordability extends to attractions and dining, allowing for a richer, more extended exploration of the city's offerings without straining the budget.

The accommodation landscape within Baguio City Proper is as varied as its geography. Areas like Session Road Area are synonymous with convenience and accessibility, offering a range of hotels that serve as excellent bases for exploring the city's commercial heart. Similarly, the Legarda-Burnham-Kisad district provides a more relaxed setting, often with hotels offering scenic views and proximity to key landmarks. For those planning their trip, exploring options in these areas is a crucial step to finding the perfect place to book hotel accommodations.

Baguio City Proper appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. American and European visitors often appreciate the cooler climate, the remnants of American colonial architecture, and the serene mountain landscapes, drawing parallels to destinations in their home countries. Indian travellers frequently find the city's affordability, diverse culinary scene, and relatively easy connectivity appealing. While direct travel from many African nations might be less common, those who do visit often seek unique cultural exchanges and natural beauty, which Baguio readily provides.

Beyond the typical Filipino fare, the city boasts specialties influenced by its highland setting and historical connections. From hearty stews to unique vegetable dishes and sweet treats, Baguio's food scene is a delightful exploration of local flavours and ingredients, making it a must-experience aspect of any visit.

The city is renowned for its fresh produce, particularly strawberries and a wide variety of vegetables, which form the backbone of many local dishes. Visitors should seek out strawberry taho, a warm silken tofu dessert topped with strawberry syrup and sago, a classic Baguio treat. Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish involving a specific way of preparing chicken, is another local delicacy that offers a taste of the region's heritage. For those with a sweet tooth, ube jam and peanut brittle are popular pasalubong (take-home gifts) that capture the essence of Baguio's culinary identity.

For an authentic taste of Baguio, exploring its local markets and food streets is essential. The Baguio City Public Market is a vibrant hub where you can find fresh produce, local delicacies, and affordable meals. Areas around Session Road and Burnham Park also offer a concentration of restaurants and cafes, ranging from casual eateries to more upscale dining establishments. For Muslim travellers, while Baguio is not predominantly Muslim, seeking out restaurants that clearly label Halal options or inquiring about preparation methods is advisable, especially in more tourist-oriented areas.

Dining in Baguio City Proper offers excellent value for international visitors. Street food and market fare can be enjoyed for as little as ₱ 50-100 (approximately $1-2 USD), offering a budget-friendly way to sample local flavours. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 300-800 (approximately $6-16 USD) per person for a meal, providing a comfortable dining experience. Upscale restaurants might range from ₱ 1,000-2,500 (approximately $20-50 USD) per person for a more elaborate meal, offering a taste of refined Baguio cuisine.

When dining in Baguio, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Tipping is not as ingrained as in some Western countries, but a small gratuity of 5-10% for exceptional service is appreciated. It's customary to use your right hand for eating if dining without utensils. Be open to trying new dishes and engaging with local food vendors; their recommendations often lead to the most memorable culinary discoveries.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Baguio City Proper

Navigating the cultural landscape of Baguio City Proper as an international visitor is a rewarding experience, provided one is mindful of local customs and etiquette. The city, while progressive, retains a strong sense of community and respect for elders and traditions. Understanding these nuances will foster positive interactions and a deeper appreciation for the local way of life, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

In Baguio, politeness and respect are highly valued. A simple "po" and "opo" (yes, sir/ma'am) when addressing elders or authority figures goes a long way. When visiting homes or more traditional establishments, it's polite to remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection are generally kept subtle. While Baguio is relatively liberal, dressing modestly when visiting religious sites or more conservative neighbourhoods is always a good practice, especially for travellers from cultures with different dress codes.

When staying at accommodations like Lafaayette Luxury Suites Baguio or Paragon Hotel and Suites, standard hotel etiquette applies. Respect quiet hours, especially at night, and be mindful of noise levels. Photography within private hotel rooms or during private events is generally not permitted without consent. Queuing is orderly, and patience is appreciated. For any specific rules or customs within your chosen hotel, it's always best to inquire with the front desk upon arrival.

Safety in Baguio City Proper is generally good, with the city being one of the more peaceful urban centres in the Philippines. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and transport terminals. For transportation, utilize reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps like Grab, which are widely available and offer fare transparency. It's also advisable to have offline maps downloaded and to keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

For emergencies, dial 911 for immediate assistance. The local police can be contacted through their station numbers, and tourist police units are often available in key areas. For international visitors, knowing the contact details of your respective embassy or consulate in the Philippines is crucial. For Filipino travellers, understanding health advisories and ensuring you have adequate travel insurance for any unforeseen medical needs is a prudent step before embarking on your journey.
