Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular choice for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common method is by bus, with numerous companies operating daily trips from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay. Bus fares typically range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200, and the journey takes approximately 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

For those who prefer to fly, you can book flight tickets to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can then take a bus directly to Baguio, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. This option can be faster than a direct bus from Manila, especially if you find good flight deals. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights to Clark.

Driving to Baguio is also an option for those with their own vehicles. The primary route is via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then connecting to the TPLEX and finally the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it’s wise to factor this into your budget. The drive offers scenic views as you ascend into the Cordillera mountains.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

The best time to visit Baguio City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is generally cooler and less prone to heavy rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The months of December to February are particularly popular due to the Christmas season and the cooler temperatures.

However, if you prefer to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better rates on accommodation, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or early December, or in late February and March. The "ber" months (September, October, November) can bring cooler weather but also increased chances of typhoons and rain. Visiting during the Panagbenga Festival in February is a unique experience, but expect significant crowds.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is renowned for its unique culinary scene, influenced by its cool climate and indigenous culture. One dish you absolutely must try is the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish made with chicken or pork, vegetables, and a unique preparation method involving beating the meat to tenderize it and enhance its flavor. It’s a hearty and flavorful introduction to local cuisine.

Another local specialty is the Strawberry Taho, a variation of the classic silken tofu dessert. Instead of plain syrup, it's served with fresh strawberry puree and sago pearls, perfectly capturing the sweetness of Baguio's famous strawberries. You'll find vendors selling this refreshing treat throughout the city, especially near tourist spots.

For those who love savory snacks, try the Ube Kinaiyahan, a purple yam-based delicacy that offers a sweet and slightly earthy flavor. It’s often enjoyed as a dessert or a merienda. Baguio is also famous for its strawberries, so don't leave without trying fresh strawberries, strawberry jams, and other strawberry-flavored products available in local markets and shops.

When exploring dining options, consider visiting local carinderias for authentic flavors or restaurants that specialize in Cordilleran cuisine. Many establishments near Citylight Hotel offer these local favorites, allowing you to easily sample the best of Baguio’s food culture.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that values respect and community. When interacting with residents, a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas and during late hours, to respect the peaceful atmosphere.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. Familiarize yourself with the hotel's emergency procedures as well.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading essential apps. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation. Grab is available for ride-hailing services, offering a convenient way to get around if you're not walking. Weather apps can help you stay updated on Baguio's famously unpredictable mountain weather. Having these apps on your phone will enhance your travel experience.

Clean, the staff is nice, and they have many options for their yummy breakfast. At night, if you're too lazy to go out for dinner, they have a good buffet on the rooftop.

We stayed in Rooms 511 and 513. Around midnight, we heard loud noises from above (chairs/tables being dragged), which disturbed our sleep, my son couldn’t rest at all. When I reported it, the receptionist only said “sorry” without offering any solution. The noise continued even after breakfast. Upon checkout, the manager admitted it was staff preparing upstairs, even at midnight. This shows poor consideration for guests. Many reviews already mention this noise issue, yet it remains unresolved. For the price charged, the experience was not worth it!!!!!

No internet in room, no water pressure in shower and toilette, we had to wait 15 minutes between consecutive showers, not enough sockets for charging electric devices, no small lights for each bed, lights were very low in limens so it was hard to read a book. very low soap quality. It looks like that the management policy is to get good money for the room but avoiding the guest to have any good service

Good customer service. Clean room. However, we check in for 3pax (2 adults 1 child 9yo) breakfast included only for 2 adults, and we pay extra for a child on regular price P320 which is I don’t think it is worth it, since my 9yo doesn’t eat that much. There’s free parking if you’re travelling with vehicle.

Close to sessions road , walking distance to many places. Staff were professional. Place was clean , nothing fancy as far as decor or furniture, has just what you need . A cupule of issues , the toilet has a foot flush I pressed it down only a little water went down , need to keep foot on the flusher until it flushes all the way . Another thing was the shower. There was a sign to heat water to turn all the left and wait 10- 15 minutes. .when time I turned on the shower , the water was trickling out of the shower head low water pressure. Attempted to adjust, the water pressure only better if it was turned all the way to cold , so I was unable to wash my hair because did not want to use cold water and if I used hot or warm the water pressure would have not been enough to get the shampoo or conditioner out of my hair. There is an included breakfast buffet which was very good , many choices to choose from , traditional filipino breakfast food , pancit , variety of pastries and desserts, there was a station were they were making eggs , omelets and pancakes.

Just a average stay. Lots of papers in rooms can be explained during c/in. Breakfast buffet less selections. Chicken wing’s dressing should not be just mayonnaise or ketchup. No power outlets on bed side table , no table lamps . Entrance security guards are friendly and helpful.
