Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from Manila, reaching Baguio City involves several convenient options. The most common and economical way is by bus. Major bus companies like Victory Liner and Genesis Transport operate frequent trips from terminals in Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically takes about 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the specific route. Bus fares usually range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive classes.

While there are no direct flights to Baguio's own airport, travelers can opt to fly to Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 2-3 hour drive from Baguio. From Clark, you can take a bus or arrange for private transport. Alternatively, some travelers fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and then proceed to the bus terminals for the land trip. Booking your flight in advance can often secure better fares.

For those who prefer to drive, Baguio City is accessible via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), connecting to the Jose Abad Santos Superhighway and then the MacArthur Highway, eventually leading to the Naguilian Road or Kennon Road for the final ascent to Baguio. The drive from Manila is approximately 250-300 kilometers, and toll fees can add up to around PHP 600-800 for a round trip, depending on your vehicle.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it an attractive destination anytime. However, the peak tourist season generally falls during the dry months, from November to May. This period offers the most sunshine and the lowest chance of rain, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The months of December to February are particularly popular due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as the cool weather.

The shoulder months, such as November and March to May, can offer a good balance, with pleasant weather and slightly fewer crowds than the absolute peak. If you prefer a more tranquil visit and don't mind occasional rain showers, the wet season from June to October can also be rewarding. During this time, the city's greenery is at its most lush, and hotel rates might be more affordable. The famous Panagbenga Festival, or Flower Festival, takes place every February, drawing large crowds for its vibrant parades and floral displays.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that appeal to Filipino palates. One absolute must-try is the **Strawberry Taho**. Unlike the usual plain taho, Baguio's version is made with fresh, locally grown strawberries, giving it a sweet and slightly tart flavor that perfectly complements the silken tofu and sago. You can find vendors selling this refreshing treat throughout the city, especially near tourist spots.

Another local specialty that captures the essence of Baguio is **Ube Jam**. Made from purple yam, this sweet spread is a popular pasalubong (take-home gift). Its rich, creamy texture and distinct flavor make it perfect for toast or as a filling for pastries. Many local bakeries and souvenir shops offer homemade versions, often considered superior to mass-produced ones.

For those seeking savory delights, **Pinikpikan** is a traditional Cordilleran dish worth trying. This unique dish involves a specific preparation method where a chicken is lightly beaten to induce stress, which is believed to enhance the flavor and tenderness of the meat. It's often cooked with etag (smoked pork) and vegetables, resulting in a hearty and flavorful soup. Several local restaurants in Baguio serve authentic Pinikpikan.

Don't leave Baguio without trying their **Smoked Meats**, particularly smoked pork or longganisa. The cool climate of the region is conducive to traditional smoking methods, resulting in meats with a deep, smoky flavor and a tender texture. Many local markets and eateries offer these, often served with rice for a satisfying meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and respectful locals. When interacting, a polite greeting like "Mabuhay" or a simple "Good morning/afternoon" goes a long way. It's customary to be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas and during late hours. When visiting churches or more traditional sites, dressing modestly is appreciated. Bargaining is common in public markets, but always do so respectfully.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact information readily available.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-hailing apps or local taxi booking apps can be useful for transportation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos. Having a weather app can also help you plan your day, given Baguio's changeable mountain climate.

Stayed here for 4 nights during November and actually upgraded to a deluxe room because not all rooms have a/c. The room was massive for just one person but I barely used the a/c which is okay I didn’t mind the space. The breakfast at this hotel is really nice. It’s sort of a mix between Filipino and western options. Also I loved the location which was so conveniently located close to SM mall, secret garden restaurant which is right opposite the hotel and had great food/cute seating. The staff here is really kind and nice, they helped me from my smallest requests to assisting my friend with early check in. I would totally stay here again! You also have an in room massage option which was such a bonus. You do need to pay in pesos directly to the masseuse so make sure you are prepared. The massage for me was a 10/10! Few cons for this hotel- the room smells like mold. No matter how much I left the windows open, I think it was the carpets unfortunately. Second, the room I got faced the street which at times was super noisy at late and early hours . This noise is mostly from vehicles going up and down right in front of the hotel as you’re facing the road. And lastly, the bathroom stunk a bit like sewage if you turned on the ventilation fan. Overall good experience!

Unfortunately I wanted to love this place as I enjoy discovering boutique hotels all over the world. Upon arriving to our hallway of our room there was a musty strong odor but I realized it was just probably the hallway carpet as there is alot of traffic in and out. We dropped off our belongings and came back in the evening and the bathroom reeked with some odor that I felt was coming in from the pipes. The sink water was was not going down. We had someone fix it. The following day the smell was worse and the shower water was not draining well as well. We had a night manager come in and review it himself and he moved us to better accommodation. Unfortunatel the executive suite they transferred us to also had plumbing problems. The following morning our toilet was plugged ( we know not to place tissues and toilet paper in the toilets in the philippines) we called customer service and no one came to look at it. I think this hotel has potential but they need to fix their smelly carpets, plumbing issues and customer service. Upon sharing our experience to one of the front desk attendants we asked for the day manager. Another attendant raised his hand who was standing by the female attendant listening to us. He stood there but never even acknowledge he was a manager or did anything about it. The previous evening manager, Kristopher, was way more accommodating despite the circumstances. Save your money. Go else where for better service and value. This is a hotel in training.

It’s not their practice cleaning the room unless customer requested. It should be the other way around, customer plug a note not to clean their room. That’s a practice we notice in every hotel we check in. No other tissue except a toilet paper.
