Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a common route for many Filipino travelers. The most convenient way is often by bus, with several reputable companies operating daily trips. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, offer numerous departures. Bus fares typically range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200, depending on the company and service type (e.g., regular or executive). Travel time is approximately 6 to 8 hours, influenced by traffic conditions.

For those who prefer air travel, the nearest airport to Baguio City is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 2 to 3-hour drive from Baguio. Several airlines offer flights to Clark from various domestic destinations. From Clark, you can take a bus or arrange for a van transfer to Baguio. Booking your flight in advance through Traveloka can often secure better fares.

Driving your own vehicle offers the most flexibility. The primary route from Manila involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, eventually connecting to the Jose Abad Santos Avenue and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it’s wise to budget for these. The scenic Marcos Highway or the Kennon Road are also options, though they can be more challenging to navigate.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a pleasant, cool climate year-round, making it a popular destination regardless of the season. However, the coolest months are typically from December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius. This period is also considered peak season due to the Christmas holidays and the Panagbenga Festival in February, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The months from March to May constitute the dry season, with temperatures slightly warmer but still comfortable, averaging around 20-25 degrees Celsius. This is another popular time for visitors, especially during the Holy Week. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months or the rainy season, from June to November. While there might be frequent rainfall, the city is often less crowded, and you can enjoy lush green scenery.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Baguio is complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Strawberries are a must-try, whether fresh from the farm, in jams, or as the star ingredient in strawberry taho, a warm silken tofu dessert with sago and syrup. You can find fresh strawberries and taho vendors in many parts of the city, including near tourist spots.

Another local specialty is the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam that is used in various desserts like ube jam and ube cake. Baguio is also known for its unique take on Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish made with chicken that is lightly beaten to tenderize the meat and enhance its flavor, often cooked with etag (smoked pork).

For a hearty meal, try the Baguio longganisa, a local sausage that is typically savory and slightly sweet. It’s a popular breakfast item and can be found in local markets and restaurants. Don’t forget to sample the local coffee, which is grown in the Cordillera region and offers a rich, robust flavor that perfectly complements the cool Baguio weather.

When dining out, explore the local eateries and restaurants around Baguio City Proper. Many establishments offer these local delicacies. For a more refined dining experience, consider restaurants along Session Road or those offering panoramic views of the city. You can also find numerous cafes serving hot chocolate and pastries, perfect for a chilly Baguio afternoon.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and rich cultural heritage, influenced by indigenous Cordilleran traditions and American colonial history. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are always appreciated. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Tagalog can go a long way. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any urban area, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is a valuable number to have.

Essential apps for your trip include navigation apps like Google Maps to help you find your way around the city and its attractions. Ride-hailing apps can also be useful for getting around, though jeepneys are a very common and affordable mode of transport for many routes. Weather apps are crucial for keeping track of Baguio’s famously changeable climate.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may speak different dialects. Having a reliable communication app like WhatsApp or Messenger is also helpful for staying in touch with your travel companions or for coordinating with your hotel. These tools can enhance your travel experience and ensure a smoother journey.

Staff were friendly especially the reception folks. We arrived early and allowed to have an early check in. Hotel and room interior needs renovation badly though. Location is quite far from usual tourist spots.

The room was good except for the carpet that is obviously dirty. Good thing they offer slippers in the room! Also, we picked a room which offers free wifi, meaning we have to pay extra for that. Unfortunately, we were informed that the wifi connection only works in the lobby and does not reach our room. Kind of disappointing really.

It was a bit disappointing. The room they gave us was not good (room 501, view was roof of the 4th floor and laundry area) it is also across the housekeeping office and was noisy (we can hear their phone ringing every time someone was calling them), bedsheets were so old and it was itchy that's why wasn't able to sleep properly. Bathroom too is not clean, you can see very old watermarks on tiles and the wood brackets of the sink was infested with termites. Also, the glass in the breakfast area was not cleaned properly, I saw black things floating in the water. Carpets were old and smell like molds. aircon in our room was leaking, holder of the bidet was broken too that's why it always falls on the ground. light in the room was broken, we even asked the maintenance person to fix it.

We were supposed to stay for 2 nights only, our stay during those 2 nights were great. Clean rooms and good location. When we were supposed to check out, my friends and I decided to extend our stay in baguio and decided to stay for the 3rd night. Since we only booked for 2 nights, we had to ask again the staff from the reception if the same room is available to be booked on our 3rd night. She said its already booked and we'd have to choose another room. When we transferred, we had to leave our things right away because we were going somewhere else before lunch. 1.) we went back to the hotel room and found a pair of slippers that was not ours! So right there and then we realized that someone was in our room when we were out! We called the reception and they had to review the cctv. 30mins later, the head of the housekeeping came and apologized for the misunderstanding. They said that a trainee was cleaning the room we left and thought that the pair of slippers was ours so she/he knocked on the door of our new room and when no one answered, she/he decided to open the room and leave the pair of slippers!!!!! Who would do that??? I told the head of housekeeping that the pair of slippers is not ours and before we left, we checked the room we were leaving and the guy who helped us carry our things also checked the room before we decided to leave. So how can someone mistaken the slippers to be ours?!!! They only apologized and said that their only purpose is to return the item to us!!! How ridiculous does that sound?! I told them they should not have opened the door if no one was answering and just left the item in the reception!!! 2.) the flush in the restroom was not working!!! 3.) the aircon was not working properly and they offered us a fan. I told them we should have booked fan room if we wanted to have one. So they gave us another room similar to the one that we originally booked. They initially said that they were fully booked but we found out there were only 18 rooms used out of 50+ rooms available. Please don't stay in this hotel. We're not sure of the safety of your things.

Location was not so good. Some of the staffs, except for the frontdesk, are not so approachable/friendly. Sink is cloged. We have not been advised beforehand that our room is not aircondirioned. Wifi connection is very weak to none. Complimentary breakfast tastes like hospital food. :( We had no towels in our room hence we needed to call and ask for it. Good thing though is that they have a luggage room where we can keep our luggage after check-out. Another plus point probably is the bathtub.

This is my second stay at this hotel. While I was very satisfied on my first stay two years ago, this time was different. Staff on the front desk especially during the evenings of our recent stay were not accommodating and very unapproachable. Hence you'll hesitate to call for assistance. There are times that they will just give you the local numbers for housekeeping/laundry/kitchen so you'll make the request yourself. Bottled waters were not replenished daily, and I still had to explain that it was for my second night, as the staff insists that there is a limit on the bottled water. Toiletries had to be requested also. We also had a hard time borrowing their iron and ironing board on our first try. Lady on the front desk during our first night kept on insisting that we have our clothes ironed on their laundry as there will be a fee for borrowing the iron. (Additional fee for borrowing would not be an issue though, just wondering why the girl kept on repeating that there will be a fee, seems to me that she doesn't like to lend the iron lol) Level of accommodation depends on the mood of the front desk staff, which is not satisfying and not helpful. On the other hand, Housekeeping staff are very helpful and very prompt in assisting us with our requests. Same with the staff that assisted us during breakfast, very accommodating.

I can say that it was a good stay. Nice buffet breakfast served on our day 1 and ala carte option for our last day. Room was okay if your not looking for a very fancy room. You know that the building was already a little old but again it was just okay. Only thing that's not okay was the aircon, it wasn't working and despite the feedback, they didn't fix it. So we slept with just an e-fan that was working. We were there for three days and two nights.

Noise (Loud Musics, Laugh, talks) of other rooms are heard in our room. We call the attention of the Reception, still they continue their talks. We waited so long to have our Breakfast meal, crew at hotel are not that good to manage queries.
