In terms of ambiance, I can give it an excellent rating. Staff were very accommodating, especially Miss Phine. Rooms are clean, location is great because it's near Camp John Hay, and it has an excellent coffee shop also.

Location: Perfect. Because it's near Burnham Park, Good Taste restaurant, Foam Coffee, Harrison Street, Baguio Night Market, Session Road, Vizco's, Baguio Cathedral, sm baguio. Also, beside it, is a grocery store.💯. Food: Perfect. Because you can get as much as what you can consume. They served garlic rice, steamed rice, scrambled eggs, dried fish, hotdogs, pork steak, breads and jams, coffee, juice, salad and fruits.💯. Room: Good. Because I'm not sure if other parts of the room is clean. But definitely the bathroom needs to be scrubbed. The AC unit was loud from time to time. And, there's no room slippers provided. Also, they need to change their old towels, and their busted lights as well. Good thing their bed linens and comforters are clean. Staffs: Perfect. (Even if my request was not followed.) Front desk ladies were kind and accommodating. Every staff we see greets us politely.💯. Thank you, Hotel Veniz Burnham!

Baguio City Proper: The Philippines' Summer Capital for the Global Explorer

Baguio City Proper, often hailed as the Philippines' Summer Capital, offers a refreshing escape from the tropical heat, presenting a unique blend of cool mountain air, verdant landscapes, and a distinct cultural charm that appeals to international travellers. Unlike the bustling metropolises or pristine beaches that define much of the archipelago, Baguio provides a different kind of Philippine experience. Its elevated position in the Cordillera Mountains gifts it a temperate climate, making it a welcome respite and a destination that feels distinctly European in its atmosphere, yet undeniably Filipino in its heart.

The city's character is not monolithic; it unfolds across its diverse neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour for visitors. From the tranquil, residential feel of Pacdal and Greenwater Village to the more central and accessible Legarda-Burnham-Kisad and Rizal Monument Area, there's a distinct rhythm to each district. Asin Road offers a more serene, nature-infused experience, while Lourdes Subdivision and the areas around General Emilio F. Aguinaldo, including Quirino-Magsaysay and General Luna, provide glimpses into local life. Understanding these variations is key to crafting an itinerary that truly resonates.

With an average starting price of ₱ 2,244.73 per night and a solid review score of 7.5 from 49 reviews, Baguio City Proper presents itself as a compelling value proposition for travellers from the United States, Europe, and India. This affordability, coupled with the unique climate and cultural offerings, positions it as an attractive alternative to more conventional Southeast Asian destinations. For those accustomed to higher price points in their home countries, Baguio offers a chance to experience a rich cultural tapestry and natural beauty without a prohibitive cost.

The accommodation landscape in Baguio City Proper mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from cozy guesthouses to more contemporary lodgings. Properties like RiCio Haus, a 2.5-star guesthouse in Pacdal known for its amenities, and Baguio Tiptop Vacation Homes, a 3-star option also in Pacdal offering a rooftop terrace, exemplify the variety available. These establishments serve as excellent starting points for exploring the city, offering a comfortable base from which to discover the many facets of this mountain retreat. Travellers can easily book hotel stays that suit their preferences and budget.

Baguio City Proper is a destination that caters to a wide spectrum of international visitors. For American travellers, it offers a unique cultural immersion and a cooler climate. European visitors might appreciate the historical undertones and the picturesque scenery, reminiscent of alpine towns. Indian travellers will find familiar warmth in the hospitality, diverse culinary options, and the excellent value for money. While direct regional ties might be less pronounced for African travellers, the appeal of a unique mountain city with a rich cultural heritage remains a strong draw.

When dining in Baguio City Proper, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with lunch around noon and dinner from 6 PM onwards. Tipping is appreciated but not always mandatory; a 10% service charge is often included in bills at more formal establishments. It's customary to wait to be seated and to use your right hand for eating or passing food. Familiarizing yourself with basic Filipino phrases can also be a polite gesture.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Baguio City Proper

Understanding local customs and etiquette in Baguio City Proper can greatly enhance your visit and foster positive interactions with the community. While generally a welcoming city, being mindful of certain norms will ensure a smoother and more respectful experience. For instance, Filipinos are known for their hospitality, but it's polite to always greet locals, especially elders, with a respectful "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening).

When visiting popular landmarks like Sassy’s Place, it's important to observe any posted rules regarding dress codes, photography, and behaviour. While Baguio is relatively relaxed, dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, is always a good practice. Queuing culture is generally followed, so patience is key. Showing respect for local traditions and being mindful of noise levels in residential areas are also appreciated gestures.

Safety in Baguio City Proper is generally good, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas. For transportation, reliable options include taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab, which are widely available and offer fare estimates. It's advisable to use official taxi services or apps rather than hailing random vehicles, especially late at night. Having offline maps and emergency contact information readily accessible is also recommended.

For emergencies, dial 911 for immediate assistance. Local police hotlines can also be found through quick online searches. While Baguio is a safe city, it's always wise to be prepared. For international travellers, knowing the contact details of your respective embassy or consulate in the Philippines is crucial. For Filipino travellers, understanding the role of the DFA and having access to their advisories can be beneficial for any travel within the country.

Travel Guide to Baguio City Proper

Reaching Baguio City Proper from major hubs within the Philippines is a straightforward journey, primarily involving flights to nearby airports followed by a scenic land transfer. International travellers typically fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila (MNL) or Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). From Manila, buses offer a direct and economical route to Baguio, taking approximately 6-8 hours. Alternatively, one can take a domestic flight from Manila or Cebu to Clark International Airport (CRK) or Loakan Airport (BAG) if available, followed by a shorter bus or van ride.

Navigating Baguio City Proper is an experience in itself, with its hilly terrain and bustling streets. The most common and affordable mode of transport is the jeepney, which follows fixed routes throughout the city. Taxis are also readily available and relatively inexpensive, with meters usually being used. For a more personalized experience, tricycles are common for shorter distances within neighbourhoods. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are also operational, offering convenience and transparent pricing for travellers.

The best time to visit Baguio City Proper is generally during the dry season, from November to May, when the weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures averaging between 15-23°C (59-73°F). This period coincides with peak tourist season, especially around Christmas and the Panagbenga Festival in February, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher hotel prices. The wet season, from June to October, brings cooler temperatures but also frequent rainfall, which can affect outdoor activities.

Before your trip to Baguio City Proper, ensure you have the local currency, Philippine Peso (PHP), readily available. While major establishments may accept credit cards, smaller vendors and local transport often require cash. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy communication and data access. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for transport, and a translation app if needed.
