Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos. The most common and economical way is by bus. Several bus companies, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate daily trips from terminals in Pasay, Cubao, and Quezon City. The journey typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the specific route taken. Bus fares usually range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive classes, respectively. Booking your bus ticket in advance, especially during peak seasons, is highly recommended.

For those who prefer to fly, the nearest major airport with commercial flights is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 3-4 hour bus or van ride from Baguio. Alternatively, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and then take a bus directly to Baguio. While there are no direct flights to Baguio's Loakan Airport due to runway limitations, flying to Clark can sometimes offer more affordable options. You can book flight tickets to either Manila or Clark to start your journey.

Driving to Baguio City offers flexibility and the chance to enjoy the scenic routes. From Metro Manila, you can take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, connecting to MacArthur Highway and eventually the routes leading to Baguio, such as Marcos Highway or Kennon Road. The total travel time by car is around 4 to 6 hours, excluding stops. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and the winding nature of the mountain roads as you ascend.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, but the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with cooler temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The coolest months are usually December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius, offering a truly refreshing experience.

The peak tourist season in Baguio is during the Christmas holidays (December to January) and the Panagbenga Festival in February. While these times offer a lively atmosphere and festive decorations, expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices. For a more relaxed visit with fewer people and potentially lower rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April. The rainy season, from June to October, can bring heavy downpours, which might limit outdoor activities, though the city retains its charm with a misty, romantic ambiance.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its unique culture and agricultural bounty. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is the Baguio Strawberry. Whether enjoyed fresh, as strawberry taho, or in delicious strawberry shortcake and jams, these berries are a local specialty. You can find them in abundance at the public market or various cafes and bakeries around the city. Don't leave without tasting some of these sweet, ruby-red delights.

Another local favorite is the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This dish involves a unique preparation method where a piece of wood is used to beat a chicken, supposedly to tenderize the meat and enhance its flavor. The resulting soup is rich and savory, often cooked with etag (smoked pork). While the preparation might sound unusual, the taste is deeply satisfying and offers a glimpse into indigenous culinary practices. Look for this dish in local eateries that serve authentic Cordilleran cuisine.

For those who enjoy hearty meals, try the Wagyu beef dishes available in some of Baguio's restaurants. While not exclusively a Baguio product, the city has several establishments that offer high-quality beef dishes, often prepared with local herbs and vegetables. The cooler climate makes it the perfect setting to enjoy a warm, flavorful beef meal. Pair it with some local vegetables for a complete and satisfying dining experience.

Finally, no trip to Baguio is complete without sampling some of the local coffee and pastries. The cool weather is perfect for sipping a warm cup of locally grown coffee. Many cafes offer unique blends and artisanal pastries, including those made with strawberries or ube. Exploring the local bakeries and coffee shops is a delightful way to discover Baguio's sweet side and enjoy a moment of relaxation.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that blends indigenous Cordilleran traditions with modern Filipino influences. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are highly valued. Learning a few basic phrases in Ilocano or Kankanaey, though not essential, can be appreciated. Remember to always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially during cultural events or in more traditional settings.

Safety in Baguio City is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places like the public market or bus terminals. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline. It's also a good idea to save the contact numbers of your hotel and any local friends or acquaintances you might have in the city.

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and estimating travel times. Ride-hailing apps are available for convenient transportation, though jeepneys remain a very affordable option for getting around. Weather apps can help you stay updated on Baguio's famously changeable weather, allowing you to pack appropriately and plan your activities accordingly.

Additionally, having a reliable communication app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger is useful for staying in touch with family and friends. For booking accommodations and attractions, the Traveloka app is a handy tool. Having these digital aids can significantly enhance your comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment of your trip to Baguio City, ensuring you have all the information and services you need at your fingertips.

Travelite used to be my favorite place because it is strategically located near Burnham, Baguio Market, and Session Road. However, I am a little disappointed with my recent stay because the bathroom provided to us was missing a faucet in the shower. Another issue was the water pressure. I'm not sure if it 's the faucet on the sink or the water pressure itself, but it 's inconsistent. No matter how much we try to control the faucet, the water blasts out and ends up wetting our clothes. Now, I'm unsure if I will return.

Actually, it's ok, the people who assisted us are kind, it's just that the air conditioner is a bit weak and the fan is weak, so it's a bit hot inside the room, unlike when you leave the room, you can really feel the coldness of the air conditioner.

Positive feedback: staff 👍, bed/pillow/sheets 👍, big TV 👍. Negative feedback: having no bottled water in the room and just having a water station is hallway is unhygienic 👎. Intercom phone also in the hallway 👎, no bidet 👎, no writing desk 👎, bathroom exhaust not working 👎.

We felt unsafe. We went there early to register around 7:30am for our check in later we were about to leave when their 2 male security had a confrontation and was close to beating one another. We were about to exit the entrance and that 's where they both are starting a fist fight. We went out but felt really unsafe to check in later at 2pm.

Location of hotel is good and closed enough to Burnham. Accommodation is superb, spacious and comfortable and looks exactly the same with pictures. The staff were always friendly, helpful and assist us even in the middle of the night. We feel safe since it has 24hours duty guard on front door of the hotel. Overall this is great hotel and I would definitely stay here again! 😉.

The place was worth it for the price. Only problem were the walls. They were too thin so you can hear people opening their room doors or passing by the hallway and no Netflix/YT on the TV.

I travel alone most of the time and this hotel is like my official home in Baguio. They make me feel secure, comfy and welcome everytime. The cleanliness of the room is 5 out of 5. The hotel staff are friendly, kind and I swear good looking people. Location I mean what can you ask for it is walking distance to burnham park. Safe parking space.

WILL NOT STAY HERE AGAIN! They do not respond to messages and calls. The hotel is the one who will approve your request and provide qrt code, they just started replying, later on no more. Text messages, viber and calls are all a waste of time. 12 times I attempted to call on different times. The worst is their broken outlet, all 3 outlets with 2 sockets each! There was one that worked after itry nungg room service but it ended up damaging my original charger. Need daw kasi ipush. The room service person knows that your outlets are broken. Not indicated in hotel description but need 500 deposit. I wouldn't have done a negative review but we were charged 125 because a towel was said to be dirty. We put that towel on the door of the car because the water is leaking out of the door, you also don't have slippers at all so it was probably dirty when you stepped on it, which is the dirt that can be removed from the laundry. I should have charged you for my broken charger because of your faulty outlet. Their free coffee in the lobby when we went down at 5am was crawling with cockroaches! I even reacted with a cockroach but the woman at the reception was just dedma, she was also the woman who decided to charge us with the towel. There is only one good thing about this hotel ... close to good taste

Accommodation is good and one of the best. Location is very strategic to attraction, park, food trips, mall, shops etc! Very nice and relaxing stay. Reception also offers to have your belongings to be storage after check out if in case your check out and travel time out of the city does not match. All in all very nice place. 10/10 for me. This is our 2nd time to avail on this Travelite Express Hotel.
