Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular choice for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common way is by bus, with numerous companies operating from terminals like Cubao and Pasay. Buses typically run 24/7, with trips taking approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Fares usually range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive seats. Booking your flight to nearby airports like Clark (CRK) and then taking a bus or van to Baguio is also an option, often providing more flexibility.

For those who prefer to fly closer to Baguio, while there isn't a major airport directly in the city, flights to Clark International Airport (CRK) are frequent. From Clark, you can take a bus or van service directly to Baguio, a journey of about 3 to 4 hours. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer regular flights to Clark from various domestic destinations. Planning your trip and booking your flight in advance can often secure better fares.

Driving to Baguio City is also a viable option for those with their own vehicles. The journey from Manila typically takes around 4 to 6 hours via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), connecting to the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it's advisable to factor this into your travel budget. The scenic route offers beautiful views as you ascend into the Cordillera mountains.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

The best time to visit Baguio City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is generally cooler and less prone to heavy rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The coolest months are typically December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius, offering a truly refreshing experience.

The peak tourist season coincides with the dry months, especially during the Christmas holidays and the Panagbenga Festival in February. While the weather is pleasant, expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices during these periods. For a more relaxed visit with fewer crowds and potentially lower rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, early December, or late January to early February, outside of major holidays.

The rainy season, from June to October, brings cooler temperatures but also frequent and sometimes heavy downpours. While this period might deter some tourists, it offers a different charm with lush, green landscapes and fewer visitors. If you don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a quieter Baguio experience, this season can still be enjoyable, provided you pack appropriate rain gear and plan indoor activities.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that appeal to Filipino palates. One must-try is the **Strawberry Taho**, a local twist on the classic silken tofu dessert, infused with fresh strawberry syrup and sago. You can find vendors selling this refreshing treat in many tourist spots, including Burnham Park. It’s a perfect snack to cool down with.

Another local specialty is **Baguio Longganisa**, a distinctively sweet and garlicky sausage. Unlike other regional versions, Baguio's longganisa is often made with local herbs and spices, giving it a unique flavor profile. Many restaurants and local markets offer this, and it’s a popular breakfast item. Enjoy it with garlic rice and a fried egg for a hearty Filipino breakfast.

For those seeking savory dishes, **Pinikpikan** is a traditional Cordilleran dish worth trying. This native chicken dish is prepared by beating the chicken before cooking, which is said to tenderize the meat and enhance its flavor. It’s often cooked with etag (smoked pork) and vegetables, offering a rich and comforting taste that reflects the indigenous culinary heritage of the region.

Don't leave Baguio without trying **Ube Jam** and **Strawberry Jam**. Baguio is famous for its fresh produce, and these jams are a delicious way to take a taste of the city home. Many pasaluyong (souvenir) shops sell these homemade jams. Pair them with pandesal or toast for a delightful treat. For dining spots near uphill hotel-baguio, explore the local eateries around the entertainment center for authentic flavors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that blends indigenous Cordilleran traditions with modern Filipino influences. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are always appreciated. A simple "po" and "opo" go a long way. The city is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night.

For emergencies, it's useful to have key contact numbers handy. The local police hotline is typically 911, and you can also note down the numbers for the nearest police station and hospital. Familiarize yourself with the hotel's emergency procedures as well. Understanding basic local customs, such as respecting public spaces and disposing of trash properly, contributes to a positive experience for everyone.

To enhance your travel experience, several mobile applications can be very useful. Navigation apps like Google Maps are essential for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions. Ride-hailing apps can be convenient for booking taxis, though traditional taxi services are also readily available. For real-time weather updates, especially during the rainy season, a reliable weather app is recommended.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who might speak Ilocano or other regional dialects, although English and Tagalog are widely understood in Baguio. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable, allowing you to focus on the beauty and charm of Baguio City.

Bathroom is too small and cramped; you get a whiff of dog smell in the reception and in the hallways. Bedroom os tight and not much space to move around. Breakfast selection is limited to unhealthy meals, brewed coffee is not readily available as "it has yet to be delivered by the vendor:" The good: quick check in and check out and hotel staff are all polite, friendly and courteous.

The place is a dump… I reserved 2 rooms from January 31st to February 3rd. Upon arrival I was met by not so accommodating staff due to majority of them were on the job trainees. Inexperienced and not so friendly to my taste. I was handed tickets for breakfast (several of them since I reserved 2 rooms) and not sure what time breakfast starts, Tickets say 7am but on their policy it states 8:00am. Since I was not sure when the breakfast diner opens, I purposely arrived past 8 am. There were only few tables (4 to be exact) available for sit-in breakfast. And 1 table is being used by the cook (Chef) to write down activities for the day. I tried to sit down next to the chef since there is no other available table, but the chef drove me away, and told me to find another table. Food selections for breakfast buffet were limited to pickled papaya, Okoy (fried carrots), soup (Chef told me that it is made from grocery bought broth, and it was actually the best of the availble selection), and steamed rice. The only positive about this hotel, is when you step outside, walked downhill to the next street and flagged down jeepneys to go to the park or downtown. Fare will only coat you P13.00. Coming back is a different story since the steep uphill climb to the hotel will surely drain your energy… I am a 65 year old senior. Finally, I cut short my stay to the 2nd day… I could no longer bear the difficulty of going out due to the hotels location, and no available activities I could find nearby

As an experienced traveler who has stayed at over a thousand hotels, I must say that this particular establishment left a lasting impression, though not in a positive way. The hotel's location is undoubtedly a strong point, as it is easily accessible to various attractions and amenities in the area. Additionally, the staff's friendly demeanor and attentive service are commendable and deserve recognition. However, there are several drawbacks that cannot be overlooked. The rooms were infested with a variety of pests, including cockroaches, mosquitoes, and bed bugs. The beds and pillows were overrun with the latter, while insects were also spotted crawling on the walls. When these issues were brought to the attention of the front desk, the only solution offered was to spray insect repellent, which did little to address the underlying problem. It is worth noting that the pest infestation was not limited to a single room but was present in all three rooms that were booked. This consistency in the level of cleanliness, or lack thereof, is a clear indication of the hotel's failure to maintain proper sanitation standards. While the hotel's location may be convenient for some travelers, it is crucial to consider the overall experience and comfort of the stay. For families with children or those who prioritize hygiene and cleanliness, this hotel is not a suitable choice. The severe pest infestation makes the rooms unlivable and poses a health risk to guests.

Friendly and helpful staff. Loved the free breakfast. The room we asked for was exactly the one we wanted and with city view.

Though not too close to shops, we had a Clean room, friendly and helpful staff. You need to take a Grab ride or taxi to go to The city shops. Especially close to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

What was advertised was not reel , too expensive to that kind of hotel , not efficient personnel not even friendly, can’t decide to a very minimal request , like we lost our stub for free breakfast and they could not even accommodate that . only bath towels and no hand towels, no conditioner only shampoo and body wash, one small roll of toilet paper for the whole 2 nights stay , the added sofa as additional bed was broken , no hot water , the price that was advertised was not the same price I paid , way way super high and expensive
