Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) are readily available from Manila, Cebu, and other key hubs. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate regular services. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked early.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer overland journeys, traveling by ferry is an option, though it is considerably longer. Ferries typically depart from Manila and can take over 24 hours to reach Puerto Princesa. While this is a more adventurous and scenic route, it requires a significant time commitment. Bus services are also available for inter-island travel within Palawan, connecting Puerto Princesa to other towns.

Driving to Puerto Princesa is possible for those coming from other parts of Palawan. The main highway, the Puerto Princesa North National Highway, is well-maintained for much of its length. If you are driving from Luzon, you would need to take a ferry that accommodates vehicles. The journey is extensive and requires careful planning regarding ferry schedules and routes.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, perfect for island hopping, exploring underground rivers, and enjoying the beaches. The weather is typically warm and pleasant, making outdoor activities highly enjoyable for Filipino travelers.

The period between December and February is often considered the peak tourist season, with the most favorable weather conditions. However, this also means higher prices for flights and accommodation, and more crowds at popular attractions. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can range from short, heavy downpours to prolonged periods of rain. While this season might deter some travelers, it also offers lush, green landscapes and fewer tourists. If your itinerary is flexible and you don't mind the possibility of rain, you might find better deals during this time. Always check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without indulging in its local culinary scene. A must-try is the **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw in many local eateries and seafood restaurants.

Another local specialty you should seek out is **Tamilok**. This unique delicacy is a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, typically served fresh, dipped in vinegar. While its appearance might be unusual, its taste is often described as briny and slightly sweet, a true adventure for the palate. Be sure to try it at a reputable establishment that prepares it hygienically.

For seafood lovers, Puerto Princesa offers an abundance of fresh catches. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples in many restaurants. Look for places that serve **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup with pork and vegetables, which is a comforting and flavorful dish. Also, don't forget to try **Halo-Halo** for dessert, a popular Filipino mixed-dessert with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and ice cream.

Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will give you a more authentic taste of Palawan's cuisine. Many of these places offer delicious and affordable meals that showcase the fresh ingredients available in the region. Trying these local dishes provides a deeper connection to the culture and the people of Puerto Princesa.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino travelers visiting Puerto Princesa will find the locals to be generally warm and hospitable. It's customary to be polite and respectful when interacting with residents. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying large amounts of cash or valuables. Keep your hotel room doors and windows securely locked. For any emergencies, the local police hotline is 911.

When it comes to essential apps, having a reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around, especially if you plan to rent a vehicle. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. For booking transportation or activities, having the Traveloka app handy is recommended for seamless arrangements.

Consider downloading a weather app to stay updated on the conditions, particularly during the rainy season. Also, having a local currency converter app can be useful for managing your budget. These digital tools can significantly enhance your travel experience, making your exploration of Puerto Princesa smoother and more enjoyable.

We we picked up from the airport for a price of 3500 pesos for the return journey . Public transport price 300 pesos ( we thought this was extortionate. Breakfast was pathetic if you asked for fruit you had 1 slice of mango 4 cubes of water melon and half a small banana.for 2 persons.coffee was ok. We ordered fish from the menu which was priced at 350 pesos . The bill was 500 which we questioned and was told it was a large fish , It was large and I left half and said I didn't order a large fish and should have been charged the menu price. we went on a trip and was charged 1500 pesos to find that the guide only got 500 and the owner took 1000 . we went on no more trips . Our hut was infested with ants even on the bed . When we left we decide not to pay so much for the shuttle and decided to go by bus . the lady owner tried to charge us 2500 instead of the one way price of 1750 which we refused to pay . in the end she insisted that we pay 2000 and also the 500 for the fish. All her prices were dearer than the resort next door called Puerta resort which we would recommend where you get a welcome , good service and good prices. My wife had a massage when the masseur was slagging the owner Lydia off because she said she was only paid 250 out of 500 and that the owner and her husband asked free massages for the family and she was never paid for them. Her tour are more expensive than her competitors and she has 9 dogs that sometimes go in her kitchen WORRYING
