Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular choice for many Filipinos seeking a cooler climate. The most common way is by bus, with numerous companies operating daily trips from various terminals in Metro Manila, including Cubao and Pasay. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 800, and the journey takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Booking your book flight to Clark International Airport (CRK) and then taking a bus or van to Baguio is another option, offering a potentially faster overall travel time.

For those coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, flying into Clark International Airport (CRK) is usually the most efficient route. From CRK, you can then take a bus or arrange for a private transfer to Baguio. Direct bus routes from other Luzon cities are also available, connecting Baguio to various provincial hubs. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways leading towards Northern Luzon, though be prepared for mountain roads closer to Baguio.

When planning your trip, consider booking your transportation in advance, especially during peak seasons like holidays and the Panagbenga Festival. This ensures you secure your preferred travel times and potentially better fares. The bus journey itself offers scenic views as you ascend into the Cordillera region, making the travel part of the adventure.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

The ideal time to visit Baguio City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is generally cooler and less prone to heavy rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures can drop to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius, offering a welcome respite from the heat.

The period between November and February is particularly pleasant, with crisp air and clear skies. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices. If you prefer a slightly less crowded experience while still enjoying good weather, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March.

The wet season, from June to October, brings frequent rain showers and occasional typhoons. While the city can be beautiful and serene during this time, with lush greenery, outdoor activities might be limited. If you don't mind the rain and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip with fewer tourists, the rainy season can still be a viable option, provided you pack accordingly.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its unique cultural influences. One dish you absolutely must try is the Baguio Longganisa, a local sausage known for its distinct garlicky and slightly sweet taste, often enjoyed for breakfast. Another local specialty is Strawberry Taho, a warm, silken tofu dessert topped with strawberry syrup and sago pearls, a comforting treat especially on cooler days.

For a more substantial meal, seek out Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish made with chicken or pork, which is tenderized through a specific beating process before cooking, resulting in a rich flavor. You should also sample the local strawberries, whether fresh, in jams, or as part of desserts. Many restaurants and cafes around the city, particularly in the central shopping area near A Hotel Baguio, offer these local delicacies.

Don't leave Baguio without trying Ube Kinampay, a purple yam jam that is a popular pasalubong (souvenir). You can find excellent versions of these dishes in local eateries, markets, and even some of the restaurants within hotels. Exploring the food scene is a significant part of the Baguio experience for any Filipino traveler.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that blends indigenous Cordilleran traditions with a cosmopolitan flair. When interacting with residents, politeness and respect are always appreciated. The Panagbenga Festival in February is a major cultural event, showcasing vibrant parades and floral displays, but it also brings significant crowds.

For safety, Baguio is generally a secure city, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your belongings secure and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at their hotline numbers, which are readily available online.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-hailing apps can be useful for transportation, though local jeepneys and taxis are also widely available and affordable. Having a local weather app can also help you plan your day, given Baguio's unpredictable mountain climate.

Parking - they have on-site which is good. But since it’s literally by the lines and lines of public transpo. They have a tendency to literally block the driveway. Facility security or staff, were generally not available. So you have to go to the 2nd floor, which is their main lobby, to tell the receptionist to send assistance. Lots of foot traffic as well, and I mean that. Room - hmmm. There were dust, and hair everywhere- wall, bed, floor. I usually bring my Swiffer dry cloths, since facilities in the Philippines don’t use carpeting, I literally had to use 3 pieces of it, in our small room. Near - walking distance to Burnham, Night Market, SM, and other shopping places

The reception staff were very cheerful & helpful. Our room was comfortable & clean. The water pressure, in the shower was a little bit low. And we didn't have TV in the room. We were disappointed that breakfast was not available. And although there was coffee available in reception, my wife & I thought that a kettle in the room, would have been more beneficial.

Our stay was good and location is excellent. Did not like the fact they charge you if you need an iron and board to use, or an extra pillow.
