Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipinos, the journey to Boracay Island begins with a flight from Manila, the country's capital. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous daily flights to Caticlan Airport (MPH), which is the closest airport to Boracay. These flights typically take about 1 hour and 15 minutes and can range in price from approximately PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book.

It's always a good idea to book flight tickets in advance, especially during peak travel periods, to secure better fares. From Caticlan Airport, it's a short tricycle ride (around PHP 50-100) to the Caticlan Jetty Port.

Alternatively, you can fly into Kalibo International Airport (KLO), which is further from Boracay but often has cheaper flight options. Flights from Manila to Kalibo also take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. From Kalibo Airport, you'll need to take a bus or van to Caticlan Jetty Port, a journey that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and typically costs PHP 200-300.

Travelers from other major cities like Cebu and Davao also have direct flight options to both Caticlan and Kalibo, making Boracay accessible from various parts of the Philippines.

Once you reach the Caticlan Jetty Port, you will purchase a boat ticket (around PHP 50-100) to cross the strait to Boracay Island's Cagban Port. In addition to the boat fare, there are environmental and terminal fees, which currently amount to approximately PHP 300-400 per person. From Cagban Port in Boracay, tricycles are readily available to take you to your accommodation. For AJ Travellers Inn, located in Station 2, a tricycle ride will cost around PHP 100-150.

The entire journey from Manila to Boracay, including transfers, can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, depending on your chosen airport and waiting times.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. The Amihan, or northeast monsoon, brings gentle breezes and lower humidity, contributing to the perfect beach weather.

This period, especially from December to February, is when Boracay is at its most popular, attracting a large number of both local and international tourists. If you prefer a lively atmosphere with plenty of events and a guarantee of good weather, this is the time to visit.

The wet season, from June to October, is characterized by the Habagat, or southwest monsoon, which can bring stronger winds and occasional rainfall. While there can be periods of heavy rain, it's not uncommon to still have sunny days interspersed throughout. This season is considered the off-peak period, meaning fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation.

For Filipino travelers who prefer a more tranquil experience and are not deterred by the possibility of occasional rain showers, visiting during the shoulder months of June or October can offer a more relaxed atmosphere. It's also a good time for budget-conscious travelers looking for deals.

For a balanced experience, consider visiting during the transition months, such as late October or early November, or late May. These periods often offer a good mix of favorable weather and fewer crowds compared to the absolute peak season. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Boracay Island offers its unique charm, but understanding these seasonal differences will help you plan a trip that best suits your preferences.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Boracay Island, while famous for its beaches, also offers a delightful culinary journey that Filipino travelers will surely appreciate. A must-try dish is the fresh Kinilaw na Tanigue, a local take on ceviche. Prepared with freshly caught Spanish mackerel (tanigue), it's marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, chili, and calamansi juice, offering a tangy, zesty, and slightly spicy flavor profile that perfectly complements the tropical climate.

You can find excellent versions at local eateries in Station 2, often prepared right after the catch from D'Talipapa market.

Another local specialty that captures the essence of island dining is Grilled Liempo. This marinated pork belly is grilled to perfection, resulting in a smoky, savory, and slightly sweet dish with a delightful char. It's often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce and steamed rice. Many beachfront restaurants and local carinderias around Station 1 and Station 3 offer this classic Filipino favorite, each with their own subtle variations in marinade.

For seafood lovers, a visit to D'Talipapa market, just a short walk from AJ Travellers Inn, is essential. Here, you can select your own fresh catch – be it prawns, crabs, or various types of fish – and have it cooked at one of the surrounding paluto restaurants. Whether you opt for garlic butter prawns, steamed crabs with garlic, or grilled fish, the freshness of the ingredients shines through.

This "paluto" experience is a characteristic Boracay dining adventure.

Don't leave Boracay without trying Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This refreshing concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream is a perfect way to cool down after a day in the sun. While available all over the Philippines, Boracay's versions often feel extra special, especially when enjoyed at a beachfront cafe while watching the sunset. Look for popular spots along White Beach for a truly satisfying treat.

Room itself was okay but the way to the inn is not good. Super dirt and muddy and he's in the house though he's really close to the beach. Also, I forgot my 2 caps in the bathroom (after a check on the toilet) after checkout, but I just returned from the rest which was super sketchy! In every hotel, you're supposed to safekeep the things that was left in the room. But it was obvious that he was just passing through

Friendly staff. Clean room. It's a bit hard to find the location first but it's worth staying. PS. No breakfast included so low rating on food.

The hotel itself was okay and clean. Staff were very accommodating. However, the location was literally 3-4mins walk going to the beach, in which you need to walk in a fark alley if you want to go to the beach at night. And also, during our stay, it was raining, the place was surrounded by puddles.

We had trouble finding the location and its kind of muddy outside AJ Travellers Inn. Nevertheless, we enjoy our stay and the service.

Nice room. It's clean and its safe to stay there. And the beach is near the inn so no problem at all.
