Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For many Filipino travelers, flying into Manila is the most common way to reach the capital. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) serves as the primary gateway, with numerous domestic flights arriving daily from major cities like Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights, with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Travel time from these cities is usually between 1 to 2 hours. Planning to book flight tickets in advance can often lead to significant savings.

Traveling to Manila by bus is a more economical option for those coming from Luzon. Major bus terminals like Cubao and Pasay are hubs for inter-provincial travel. Buses from Baguio, for instance, take approximately 5-6 hours and cost around PHP 500-PHP 700. From Bicol, the journey can be longer, around 8-10 hours, with fares in the PHP 800-PHP 1,200 range. These bus rides offer a chance to see more of the Philippine countryside.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those residing within Luzon. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect the capital to various provinces. Toll fees can add up, typically ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 800 for a round trip depending on your starting point. Having your own vehicle offers flexibility but requires navigating Manila's often-congested traffic.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April, and the wet season from May to October. For the most pleasant weather, Filipino travelers often prefer visiting during the dry season, particularly from November to February. During these months, temperatures are warm but more comfortable, with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites.

The peak tourist season generally aligns with the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. If you prefer a more relaxed visit and potentially better rates, consider the shoulder months of November or February. Visiting during the wet season can offer a different perspective, with fewer tourists and lush greenery, but be prepared for occasional heavy downpours.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. Adobo, the unofficial national dish, is a must-try. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants. You can find excellent versions at local eateries and even within the hotel's dining options.

Another beloved dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish, and flavored with tamarind. Its comforting, tangy broth is perfect for any weather. For a taste of something truly Filipino, seek out Kare-Kare, a rich stew made with oxtail and vegetables in a thick, peanut-based sauce, traditionally served with bagoong (shrimp paste).

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is a refreshing treat. You can find delicious Halo-Halo at many local dessert spots and even some restaurants. Exploring the diverse food scene is a significant part of the Manila experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to show respect to elders, and using terms like "po" and "opo" (yes, respectfully) is appreciated. While Manila is generally welcoming, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

For safety, keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets. It's advisable to avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. In case of emergencies, know the local emergency numbers. Having a reliable way to navigate and communicate is essential, so consider downloading useful apps before your trip.

Essential apps for your Manila trip include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for convenient transportation and food delivery, and a translation app if you're not fluent in Tagalog. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone will significantly enhance your travel experience, making it easier to get around and connect with the city.

We have been staying at the Armada for the past thirteen years and the quality has just continued to go down over the years. The following are some examples: poor cable reception, poor internet reception, no warm water for your shower, reduced staffing, reduced menu options in the restaurant. We even had to request simple basic items such as silverware or towels. Your rates are still low but I am not sure we will be back. We switched hotels and stayed at the City Garden Suites. Yes, we paid more, but what we got in return we feel was worth it.

The staff was very helpful, the room was in good condition but the hot water was barley warm, the internet connection was intermittent. The pool water was too cold to enjoy and barley any Sun because of the surrounding buildings. The gym was not open (no working machines.) the Spa was closed. I was very disappointed from my previous stay several years earlier.

It takes entirely too long to check in and out. Its dark in the room lightening is not good. The process of checking in and out is as if you are going thru customs into another country. Never have anything prepared, they have list of reservations for the day, they should be prepared for the customers coming in. Its a horrible system checking in!! I will never stay there again, the wife has more patients and will stay if traveling alone but personally i cant wait 30 mins for you to print, sign, print, fold, sign, or whatever takes you so long. I checkin to newcoasts and it takes 5mins and they offer me my upgrade. Armada.. no upgrade and if you ask they look at you like you are crazy. Everytime no sorry sir we dont know. They know I am expedia member and its suppose to be offered if your a gold member but they never do.. Anyway .. Cheap hotel, good rooms I recommend if you dont mind waiting to check in.

Larg room and toilet. But cold water never hot? VERY COLD. Also no foot mats on the floor easy to slip and fall over in the shower. WiFi weak signal. Main room door difficult to lock the door? they sent engineer and made some modification to the security bolt ( drill hole for the bolt to enter) But main lock still difficult.

A bit disappointing. The pool has gone green so couldn’t use it. Condition of things has slipped a bit. Needs a bit of care and attention.

The room was infested with roaches. Extermination should be completed on a weekly basis until cleared.
