Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common method. Major airlines offer frequent flights to Manila from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. You can often find competitive fares if you book flight tickets in advance, with prices for domestic routes typically ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati. The travel time can vary significantly due to traffic, usually taking between 30 minutes to over an hour. The estimated taxi fare would be around PHP 300 to PHP 500. For a more economical option, consider using public transport like the MRT, though this involves multiple transfers and can be more time-consuming.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces like Pampanga or Laguna, bus services are readily available and offer a more budget-friendly alternative. Bus fares typically range from PHP 200 to PHP 400, and the journey can take two to four hours depending on your starting point and traffic conditions. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connecting to Metro Manila, though toll fees will apply.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its vibrant street life. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can disrupt outdoor plans. However, indoor attractions like malls and museums remain accessible, and the rain often brings a refreshing coolness to the city.

For travelers looking to experience local festivals and events, consider visiting during specific periods. The Christmas season, from September to December, sees Makati adorned with festive lights and decorations, offering a unique celebratory atmosphere. The Panagbenga Festival in Baguio (though not in Makati, it influences travel patterns) in February and the various local fiestas throughout the year also draw crowds.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage. While in Makati, make sure to try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households and restaurants. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Poblacion.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish. The distinct sourness comes from tamarind, though other fruits like guava or calamansi are sometimes used. Its comforting warmth and unique flavor profile make it a beloved dish, especially during cooler evenings or after a long day.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an absolute delight. This popular dessert is a colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down on a hot day and offers a delightful mix of textures and flavors. Many Filipino restaurants and dessert shops in Makati offer their own unique take on this iconic treat.

Don't leave without sampling Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While a whole lechon is often for celebrations, many restaurants offer portions of lechon kawali (deep-fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (lechon simmered in a sauce). The rich, savory taste is truly a Filipino culinary highlight.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally friendly demeanor are highly valued. While Makati is generally safe, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets, particularly in busy public transport and markets. It's advisable to avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. Having the contact details of your hotel and local authorities readily accessible is also a good practice.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city. A currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget, and a translation app can assist with basic communication if needed.

I arrived at the hotel at 5AM. Unfortunately, I needed to wait until 12NN because there was no available room for me yet. I booked a Deluxe Double Room but I resorted to downgrade to a Standard Double Room because I was not satisfied with the room I’ve originally chosen. First, I find the Deluxe Room’s aeration at 5th floor very poor. Another, I had issues with the lighting. I went there for a study therefore it was highly important for me to have a well-lit place. On the other hand, credits for all the staff and receptionists, they were all very respectful, accommodating and helpful. Moreover, the Standard Room at 2nd floor was clean although I’ve also noticed that the unit was not well-lighted. I was able to concentrate studying during my stay and this is also one thing I liked about staying at Artina Suites.Furthermore, business and shopping districts were just walking distance as well. Overall, I would like to book again with Artina Suites and I definitely recommend it to others.

On our 2nd day, When we requested for extra towels, the room boy was so hard on us. When we requested for water, he said it is not his department. I have to dial 104. Then he left with a warning that we were automatically charged 1k for smoking in the room just because he saw my room mate has unlitted cigarette on his lips when he walk out the room to go to the smoking area. Even he doesnt smell this. Or if he does, not sure that its from our room. Bo cigarette bud or anything. Then when we asked for the reciept of the 1k for the fine. They refuse to issue. :( not only rude. But corrupt.

It was very great experience to stay in this hotel. My room was upgraded for free. It's about 250 Peso from airport using Grab. The location is easy to find and really strategic. It is located on the main road, very close to 7eleven and Century shopping Mall that in case you need some stuff for your holiday. It's also located in center of Makati, so its very easy to find night market, club, or bar for your nightlife. The check in process was so quick and they charged me for free to early checkin. It depends on their room availability. It's mandatory to deposit 1000 Peso for your stay. The room was so great and big. Its more likely q apartment not a budget hotel. I had a big living room and kitchen set. There is no stove, but they provided water heater. There is a sofa for your quality time. They provided full toiletries, including towel. The air conditioner was working well. I tried some food for my breakfast. The foods were so tasty and delicious. The price is about 100-200 peso for 1 pax. They have large parking are. The staffs were very friendly and helpfull. They always gave the best smile everytime you come in or out of the lift. The security was helpful. They opened my taxi door and help me bring my luggage to the room. The wifi was so fast. In addition, the check in process was so fast and they bring my stuff that left on the room after chekout. Overall I have no complaint with this hotel and very recommends you guys to stay at this hotel.

It was my second time to stay at Artina Suites. I think they upgraded my room. I stayed in a room with a kitchen and living area, and I don't remember booking that one. It was very spacious and comfy. Unlike other hotels, Artina Suites does not charge early check-in. However they have 1k deposit on arrival. In other hotels they require you 2k! The food taste good; and they are very hygienic when delivering your food at your room. All food, even coffee! were covered with plastic wrap. Other hotels don't do that.

The front desk staff less of the hospitality should be more smile, response of the staff too slow, how together solve the problem guest (especially guests came from other country / foreigners). No tissue, no glass, no pot for make hot water (by order) my opinion there is minimum requirements. For restaurant is good: for the staff, taste of food & price.

The place is cozy but I wish the bed was not making too much creaking sound. Also please add curtains to your windows thanks and also check your showers sometimes it's not hot.

The room is great. I would like to commend their customer service. It was beyond I'd expect but I was a little bummed out that they rushed us out of the room since they can't offer us a late check-out.
