The property was so unique and beautiful. Service lacked professionalism and experience but they made up for that with their kindness. Would definitely stay again.

Amazing concept , really enjoyed the stay here ... all the staff are delightful especially Roman, the very charismatic and helpful manager of the hotel . My only recommendation would be offering a shuttle for guests every morning to Sabang otherwise if you stay a long time you can feel quite disconnected as the local area doesn’t have much .... therefore maybe having a free shuttle for all guests at 9am , then returning at 3pm or something like that would be good ! Ofcourse you can pay but for the private transfer but something like this would encourage guests to stay longer at the hotel as it would feel like there’s more to do.

Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight, but budget-friendly options can often be found, especially during off-peak periods. Expect prices to range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip.

For those who prefer land and sea travel, it's possible to reach Palawan via ferry, though this is a much longer journey. This usually involves traveling to Batangas port and taking a ferry to Puerto Princesa, which can take over 24 hours. This option is generally chosen by backpackers or those looking for a more adventurous and budget-conscious way to travel, but it requires significant time commitment.

Driving directly to Puerto Princesa is not feasible due to the geographical separation by sea. However, if you are already in Palawan and traveling from other towns like El Nido or Coron, you can reach Puerto Princesa by van or bus. These services are readily available and offer a more economical way to travel within the island, with journey times varying from 4 to 6 hours depending on the starting point and road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa enjoys a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, making it ideal for island hopping, beach activities, and exploring the Underground River. The weather is generally pleasant, with average temperatures hovering around 28-30°C.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring rain, it doesn't necessarily mean continuous downpours. Often, the rain comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon, followed by sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back atmosphere with fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. It's also a time when the landscape is at its lushest and greenest.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or May. These periods often provide favorable conditions without the peak season intensity. Ultimately, Puerto Princesa is a destination that can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm and set of activities.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, exploring the local culinary scene is a delight for any Filipino traveler. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You'll find excellent versions in many local eateries and restaurants.

Another local specialty is Tamilok, a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees. It might sound adventurous, but it's a delicacy for many. Typically served fresh with vinegar and soy sauce, it has a unique briny flavor and a slightly chewy texture. Trying Tamilok is an experience that truly connects you to the local Palawan cuisine.

Seafood is, of course, abundant and incredibly fresh in Puerto Princesa. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Look for restaurants that serve freshly caught seafood, perhaps grilled over charcoal. Many establishments offer seafood platters, allowing you to sample a variety of the ocean's bounty.

For a taste of something sweet and local, try the Ube Halaya, a popular Filipino dessert made from purple yam. While available throughout the Philippines, Palawan often has its own unique preparations. Enjoying this creamy, sweet treat after a savory meal is a perfect way to round off your dining experience in Puerto Princesa.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino travelers will find Puerto Princesa to be a welcoming place. The local culture is warm and hospitable, with a strong sense of community. It's polite to greet locals with a smile and use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders. Respecting local customs, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with indigenous communities, is always appreciated.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or markets. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services and be cautious of overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp. If you plan on booking tours or activities on the go, the Traveloka app is your go-to for finding and booking attractions and accommodations.

Having a local currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget. Familiarizing yourself with basic Tagalog phrases can also be beneficial, although English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Being prepared with these tools and a respectful attitude will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip to Puerto Princesa.

The property is nice but be aware this place is an hour away from the city. If you’re looking for a retreat, this is a good place. The singing of the birds will wake you up in the morning.

Pros: It’s a beautiful property, the room, porch, and view we’re lovely. Cons and things to note-The beach is hard to get to, and is not swimmable, the pool is 6 feet deep end to end with only a metal ladder for access - definitely not kid or elderly friendly. The food was good but inconsistent - the same dish was ordered by two people at our table and the proportions were drastically different. The service is seriously lacking. It started at check-in. I had originally booked three nights in a chalet, when we decided to stay a fourth night there was only one room available on this site so I booked it. Upon arrival I was told that I would be charged for the upgrade to a chalet for the 4th night. I hadn’t even asked yet! Really guys? The price difference was negligible And wasn’t the issue, but more about guest experience - Welcome, we’re charging you extra for something you haven’t even asked for. The next thing I was told is that there was no bartender working that day, so beer was the only possible choice. We had just traveled five hours from El Nido to get there, this was certainly not the greeting or level of service (especially in the restaurant) we were expecting from a four-star hotel.

The hotel is located about 20 min ride from Sabang. It is located in the middle of the jungle with an awesome ocean view from the hill. It is a very beautiful and comfortable place to stay surrounded by nature. Due to the location however, only transporation available to visit Saban was their private car, which costed us 700P one way with an old pickup truck. We found the place was a bit too expensive due to the lack of hot water. Food was overall good. Overall we had a great time there.

Amazing architecture, spring fed pool was very nice (cool), food was great, staff was helpful with planning day trips, rooms were clean, jungle environment was everything we wanted to experience in The Philippians. Amazing experience and I will return to this hotel if I'm ever in the Philippians again.

If you're a nature-lover, this is the place for you. It's beautifully designed, clean, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is quite good and the pool is nice too. Our family loved being able to explore the jungle, beach, and hidden gems around the property. It's a great place to unplug and unwind!

We found an absolute gem in the philippinian jungle! An hour away from the crowds and the bustle of Puerto Princesa this stay in a true jungle retreat was an awesome experience. Thanks a lot to Roman the manager, who organized excellent activities which made it possible for us to see a lot of the great nature of this island. The food was amazing, especially the chicken curry. We all loved the mango shakes. All staff was very friendly and helpful. We highly recommend this place. Our advice is to take cash with you as there is no efpos facility.

For an eco resort, the Atremaru is a grand, solidly built resort on a magnificent steep site overlooking the bay and forest. Surprising, then, to find ourselves amid construction noise and busyness upon arrival. Perhaps they were not expecting actual guests as there was some confusion as to who to speak to about what. In the evening the workers began videoke, which they graciously allowed our group to join. In some ways the resort was not best suited to small children as the pool is 6ft deep and chilly, and the lodging floors made of stone. Yet the chef cooks very well and produced superb chicken nuggets to keep them happy at dinner. The real treat here was waking amid the forest, exotic birdsong and island views.

Staying at this retreat was one of the best things I did. While staying at this retreat I was able to experience things that I probably wouldn't be exposed to. They didn't have a tv there but that just means I had to venture out more which was a good thing. All in all I would definitely go back here.

This remote resort was a joy to find. We found it to be best and cheaper to do all excursions with the resort. They provided convenience favorable quality in transport to the local attractions. This very clean and culturally enhanced facility was a breath of fresh air. We also were able to take a 25 minute hike to a nearby beach. I can not say enough about the friendly and very helpful staff. The Filipino Breakfast was perfect. I will make more stops at this resort in the future.

Great staff, location and overall amenities. Management could work a little on menu variety, but otherwise, my family and I had an amazing stay with our 2 year old.

The beach was down a very difficult footpath ,it wasn't safe at all . I wouldn't recommend going down there, even though the beach was lovely and the views were wonderful There was a sound every morning at 6 that woke me up and I wasn't happy about that. There wasn't much choice in the break fast and the phone signal was none at all

Great basic hotel in the middle of the jungle well situated for the underground river. Beautiful surroundings and very peaceful. The hotel staff are helpful but a little disorganised in the restaurant.
