Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Cebu City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Numerous flights operate daily to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer regular services. Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can often find competitive fares if you book your flight in advance, especially through platforms like Traveloka.

For those who prefer land and sea travel, bus and ferry options are available, though they are significantly longer. Buses from Manila to Cebu involve a ferry crossing and can take over 24 hours. The cost for a bus ticket can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000, depending on the bus line and service class. This option is best suited for travelers on a very tight budget who have ample time.

Driving to Cebu City is also an option for those coming from nearby Visayas islands. This would involve utilizing roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferries. The journey requires careful planning regarding ferry schedules and routes. Toll fees will also apply once you are on the island's road network. For most travelers, flying remains the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Cebu City.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and nearby islands. Temperatures usually hover around 30-32 degrees Celsius. You can book attractions through Traveloka.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and more frequent rain showers. While rain can occur, it's often in the form of short, intense downpours, and doesn't necessarily disrupt travel plans for the entire day. Traveling during the shoulder months of the wet season (e.g., June or November) can sometimes offer lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds.

For festival enthusiasts, the Sinulog Festival in January is a major draw, celebrating the Santo Niño. If you plan to visit during this time, expect massive crowds and book your accommodation and flights well in advance. For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the early months of the dry season, from December to February.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Cebu is complete without savoring its famous Lechon. Cebu's lechon is renowned for its crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, often seasoned with a unique blend of spices. Look for local eateries or restaurants that specialize in lechon for an authentic taste. It's a celebratory dish that embodies the spirit of Filipino gatherings.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, Cebu's version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in Cebu's warm climate. It’s a perfect appetizer or a light meal that showcases the freshness of local seafood.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the Rosquillos, a type of cookie originating from Liloan, Cebu. These hard, ring-shaped biscuits have a slightly sweet and milky flavor, perfect with a cup of coffee or as a pasalubong (souvenir). You can find them in local bakeries and souvenir shops throughout the city.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Chorizo de Cebu. These small, flavorful pork sausages are often slightly sweet and spicy, made with a generous amount of annatto oil, giving them their distinctive reddish hue. They are delicious pan-fried and served with garlic rice for breakfast or as a side dish.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is a blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influences, and modern Filipino life. Cebuanos are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. Learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated.

Safety in Cebu City is generally comparable to other major urban centers in the Philippines. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and bus terminals, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, local police can be reached at 911.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and estimate travel times. A currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

Additionally, having a local SIM card or an international roaming package will ensure you stay connected. This is vital for communication, accessing online maps, and using ride-hailing apps. Familiarizing yourself with these tools before your trip will significantly enhance your experience exploring Cebu City.

The staff is friendly and helpful. 10 minute walk to Ayala Mall. The first room we stayed in was good except that the shower drainage was slow and overflowed into the toilet and sink area. We extended our stay and the second room had no real issues. The reasturant has a nice breakfast buffet and regular menu options. The buffet was rather expensive at P700 for 2 people, but the menu option is more reasonable. Would recommend and stay again.

We stayed for 2 weeks in a deluxe room. It was alright. There was a cockroach in the room when we first got there but suprisingly that was the only one we saw in 2 weeks. The breakfast was okay, the women service people at the breakfast buffet were attentive and did their job well. Pros: location (in an alley but 10-15 minute walk to Ayala mall), pretty easy to hail a taxi cab at this location, the deluxe room was nice enough, hot water in the shower was consistent and the fridge worked. Cons: service can be slow and inconsistent but we are in the phillipines, breakfast options were pretty limited and imagine eating the same food for 2 weeks, the television service was down for about 2 or 3 days of our 2 week stay, the safety deposit box stopped working randomly one day so I no longer trusted it. Other notes: Wifi was meh, breakfast buffet could be better and should vary from day to day instead of nearly the same food, if someone pays 500 pesos to extend their check out time and has stayed at your hotel for 2 weeks you shouldn't try to charge them 35 pesos for a bottle of water and not allow for a change in towels or bedding. Although this hotel is a decent value, I feel they don't look at the big picture here. If you have someone tipping staff, and giving your hotel 850 USD to stay a few weeks and want their business again someday, don't nitpick small things. Will I stay here again? Maybe but it's unlikely now.

Azia was a perfect place to stay if you are after a clean and comfortable place to stay without having to put a dent in your bank account. Service was quick and staff are nice and always smiling. I would definitely stay here again.

The staff was very welcoming and always conducted themselves professionally and kindly. I highly recommend staying at this hotel if you need to stay in the area and want to save some $ without compromising quality.

Staff is nice Wifi didn't work above 5th floor on any device (i was on 6th floor) Areas of the room wouldn't look very clean, they would make it look nicer but you would still find dust and unclean areas
