Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipino travelers, the most common starting point for a trip to Baguio is Metro Manila. You can book flight tickets to either Clark International Airport (CRK) or Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL). From Clark, you can take a bus or van directly to Baguio, a journey of about 3 to 4 hours. From Manila, numerous bus companies like Victory Liner and Genesis Transport offer frequent trips to Baguio, with fares typically ranging from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200 for regular or executive services. The bus ride from Manila usually takes between 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

If you prefer to drive, Baguio City is accessible via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), connecting to the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway or Marcos Highway leading to Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so it's wise to factor this into your budget. The scenic drive offers beautiful views as you ascend into the Cordillera mountains.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, flying into Manila or Clark is usually the most practical option, followed by a bus or private transfer to Baguio. Some airlines might offer direct flights to Baguio's Loakan Airport, but these are less frequent and often more expensive. Planning your travel in advance, especially during peak seasons, is highly recommended.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a cooler climate year-round compared to the rest of the Philippines, making it a popular destination any time. However, the best time to visit for pleasant weather is generally during the dry season, from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny days with temperatures ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius, perfect for exploring the outdoors.

The peak tourist season falls between December and May, especially during the Christmas holidays and the Panagbenga Festival in February. While the weather is at its finest, expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices. For a more relaxed visit and potentially lower costs, consider the shoulder months of November, early December, or late May. The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, which can sometimes lead to fog and cooler temperatures, but also fewer tourists.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Baguio is complete without indulging in its unique culinary offerings. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry, famously grown in the region. Enjoy them fresh, in strawberry taho, or as part of delicious strawberry shortcake and ice cream. You can find these treats at the public market or various cafes around the city.

Another local specialty is the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam that gives dishes a distinct flavor and color. It's often used in desserts like ube jam and ube cake, which are popular pasalubong (take-home gifts). The rich, earthy sweetness of ube is a flavor profile that many Filipinos adore.

For a savory experience, try the Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This unique chicken dish involves a specific preparation method that results in a tender and flavorful meat, often cooked with etag (smoked pork) and vegetables. It’s a hearty meal that reflects the local culture and culinary traditions.

Don't forget to sample the local coffee. Baguio's cool climate is ideal for coffee cultivation, and you can find excellent locally sourced beans. Enjoy a warm cup at one of the many cozy cafes, often paired with freshly baked pastries or local delicacies. Exploring the food scene is a significant part of the Baguio experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and respectful locals. When interacting, a simple "po" and "opo" (yes, sir/ma'am) goes a long way. The city has a generally relaxed pace, and visitors are encouraged to embrace this calm atmosphere. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas, and always dispose of your trash properly to help maintain the city's cleanliness.

Safety in Baguio is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like the market or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at 911. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers of your hotel and local transportation services readily available.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. Ride-hailing apps or local taxi booking services can be useful for getting around the city efficiently. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. Lastly, having the Traveloka app on your phone will allow you to easily manage your bookings and discover more attractions.

We enjoyed our stay here. Price is affordable. The receptionists and staff were courteous and very accommodating that they even let us leave our bags for an extended period of time after check out. Also, they gave us complimentary breakfast which was a really nice surprise and pretty tasty too (went for the longganisa). The only complaint I can think of is the housekeepers not cleaning our room even though we put the sign out. However, it didn't really bother us cause we were checking out soon. The vicinity of the hotel is worth mentioning, just a few minutes walk to and from Burnham Park, SM Baguio, public market and food establishments such as Vizco's and even Jollibee (with picture). It really is the city center hotel but that meant we could also hear the noises from our room on the 3rd floor. That said, we still would love to stay here when visiting Baguio!

The hotel is in Session Road near to almost anything you need, from convenient stores, dining, malls and groceries, drugstores. It is easy to get a cab or just book using grab from the hotel. If you are okay to walk, the location is just walking distance to the Baguio Cathedral, Baguio Market, Porta Vaga and SM Mall. If you want to get reliable wifi connection during your stay, just choose rooms within 3rd or 4th floor. The first 2 nights we stayed at room 602 and we barely get wifi connection, but on our 3rd night we stayed at room 308 and the signal is good. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, we even got free breakfast despite booking room only in the app. Bring your own toothpaste and toothbrush since the hotel only provides soap and shampoo. No bidet too if that will be an issue for you. Overall the hotel still provided good service and a nice stay at the heart of Baguio CBD.

Room was nice and spacious. TV wasn't as good but it was certainly enough. Free breakfast from Beanstalk was amazing. Staff was also nice and accommodating. Only downside to our room was the reception for 4g was blocked because of a wall by our window.

It was a great stay at City Center. They allow leaving your things before your check-in so you can roam around the city while waiting for your check-in time. What's great about City Center is its location that is in the heart of Baguio City as it's along the famous Session Road. The staffs are all accommodating and friendly, they would always greet you with all smiles. Breakfast wasn't included in the package when I booked but they gave us free breakfast in their restaurant. Food was great too. My partner loved their Longganisa and I loved their French Toast. Although you wouldn't expect it to be like a four or five star hotel, no bedroom slippers and toothpaste and water but this is understood as they are priced relatively cheap as compared to other hotels in the same location. There are 7-elevens along Session Rd anyway, plus there's a supermarket right in the building's basement so this won't be a problem. But basic travel necessities are there - towels, shampoo and soap. Also, if you can choose a room, choose one that's not in Gen. Luna side as this is a street that never sleeps. Overall our experience was great and might be staying here again when I come back. This place is highly recommended.

This is our ninth time to stay with City Center and as always its just awesome :) Smooth check in and check out, very accommodating staff and the location is just perfect. I just hope that they have slippers for their guests but other than that I strongly recommend this hotel.
