Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers heading to Baguio City, the journey typically begins in Manila. The most common and economical way to travel is by bus. Several bus companies, including Victory Liner and Genesis Transport, operate frequent trips from terminals in Cubao and Pasay. The journey takes approximately 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions, especially when leaving Metro Manila.

Bus tickets usually range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,200 for a one-way trip, with options for executive or first-class seating offering more comfort. It's advisable to book your tickets in advance, particularly during peak seasons like holidays and the Panagbenga Festival, to secure your preferred schedule.

If you prefer to fly, the nearest major airport to Baguio is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga, which is about a 3 to 4-hour drive from Baguio. From Clark, you can take a bus directly to Baguio. Alternatively, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and then proceed to one of the bus terminals for your onward journey to Baguio.

While flying directly to Baguio is not an option, booking a flight to Clark or Manila is the first step for many. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka, comparing prices and schedules from various airlines to find the best option for your trip.

For those coming from the Visayas or Mindanao, flying into Manila (NAIA) or Clark (CRK) is the most practical approach. From these airports, you would then connect to a bus service heading to Baguio City. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) leading you towards the scenic route up to Baguio. The drive from Manila typically takes around 4 to 6 hours without significant traffic.

Be prepared for winding mountain roads as you ascend, and factor in toll fees, which can add a few hundred pesos to your travel cost.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a distinct cool climate year-round, making it a popular destination any time of the year for Filipinos seeking respite from the heat. However, the weather does vary, and understanding these nuances can help you plan your visit. The dry season, generally from November to May, offers the most pleasant weather with sunny days and cool evenings, perfect for outdoor activities.

This period, however, also coincides with peak tourist season, especially during Christmas, New Year, and the Panagbenga Festival in February. Expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices during these months.

The wet season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, which can range from light drizzles to heavy downpours. While this might deter some, it also means fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for hotels and flights. The city takes on a different kind of charm during the rains, with mist often shrouding the hills and a cozy atmosphere pervading the cafes and restaurants.

For travelers who don't mind the occasional rain and prefer a more tranquil experience, the shoulder months of June or October can be ideal. If you're planning to visit during the peak dry season, booking your accommodation and transport well in advance is highly recommended.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the months of November, early December, or late January. These periods fall within the dry season but are just before the major holiday rushes. You'll still enjoy the cool Baguio air and sunshine, but with fewer people around compared to the Christmas and Panagbenga periods. This allows for a more relaxed exploration of the city's attractions and a more personal experience of its unique charm.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its highland setting and cultural influences. One dish that stands out is the **Strawberry Taho**. While taho is a common Filipino snack, Baguio's version is elevated with fresh, locally grown strawberries, adding a sweet and slightly tart dimension to the silken tofu, sago pearls, and arnibal.

You'll find vendors selling this delightful treat in many tourist spots, including Burnham Park, and it's a refreshing snack on a cool day.

Another must-try is **Pinikpikan**. This traditional Cordilleran dish involves a unique preparation method where a piece of meat (often chicken) is lightly beaten to draw out blood, which then cooks with the meat, resulting in a richer flavor and a distinct reddish hue. It's typically stewed with etag (smoked pork) and local vegetables like sayote. While the preparation might sound unusual, the resulting dish is deeply savory and comforting, a true taste of the region's culinary heritage.

Look for this at local eateries that specialize in Cordilleran cuisine.

For those who enjoy something hearty, **Baguio Longganisa** is a local specialty worth seeking out. Unlike the sweeter versions found in other parts of the Philippines, Baguio longganisa often has a garlicky, savory flavor profile, sometimes with a hint of spice. It's a popular breakfast item, often served with fried rice and eggs, but it's also delicious on its own.

Many local markets and restaurants offer this, and it's a great souvenir to bring home if you can keep it properly chilled.

Don't leave Baguio without trying **Ube Jam**. While ube jam is available nationwide, Baguio is renowned for its particularly rich and creamy versions. Made from purple yam, condensed milk, and butter, it's a sweet spread that perfectly complements toast or pandesal. Many souvenir shops and bakeries in Baguio offer high-quality ube jam, often homemade, making it an ideal pasalubong (take-home gift) for friends and family.

Finally, for a unique dining experience, explore the local **Strawberry Fields** and farm-to-table restaurants. Beyond just strawberry taho and jam, many establishments incorporate fresh strawberries into salads, desserts, and even savory dishes. Visiting a strawberry farm allows you to pick your own berries and enjoy them fresh, a delightful activity for families and couples. When exploring these culinary options, consider using Traveloka to book dining experiences or find highly-rated restaurants near Baguio Holiday Villas.

It's important to be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting religious sites or attending cultural events.

Not good for Business travelers on the Go: I was looking forward for the Tinapa Rice Breakfast, without elaborating during check in of the breakfast time I asked By 7am the next day and they can't cater breakfast to guests who have to wait until 7:30 am despite those guests with engagement meetings by 8am or 9am. Breakfast bid goodbye, I went to Starbucks in the end.

We came at around 5pm so the standard rooms were no longer available and so they upgraded our room to deluxe instead. Hotel room is definitely okay. You get what you paid for. And the breakfast was superb.

Less expectation, less disappointment. The pictures of the room was really deceiving. I though everything in the picture was there, so I expected too much. I was wrong, there's no ac, complimentary drinks and the hot water was in the lobby area also the shower heater was not functioning well.

The place is good for groups and families! The garden is nice, it added so much to the serenity of the place. The staffs are nice and very accommodating. The only con I noted is the lacking of the basic toiletries in the villas. But, overall, our stay is very good. Will definitely come back to this place.

The hotel is good for a large group. The room was spacious and quite clean. The food is also good. The only problem is the water. When 1 person is using the bathroom in the ground floor, no water goes up to the bathroom in the second floor.

This hotel is perfect for family because of villas available where cooking is allowed. The plated breakfast is very good especially the homemade longganisa. All staff are courteous, helpful and very accommodating. The hotel rooms provide basic amenities such as shampoo, liquid siap and tooth brush. Complimentary bottled water is not available, but hot water is available 24/7 at the restaurant area. Seven eleven is also located at the ground floor. Jollibee, Chieking and Giligand’s are very near the hotel. It is also near Burnham park but Session Road can be reached by foot for about 20 minutes.
