Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines, including Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, operate regular flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight, but budget-friendly options are often available.

For travelers coming from Luzon or Visayas who prefer a more adventurous journey or are looking for a potentially more economical option, bus travel is available, though it is significantly longer. This usually involves taking a ferry from various ports in Luzon or the Visayas to Palawan, followed by a land trip. The total travel time can extend to over 24 hours, making it a journey for those with ample time and a desire for a more immersive travel experience.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option, particularly for those already in Palawan or coming from nearby islands accessible by car ferry. The roads within Palawan are generally well-maintained, especially the main highways connecting major towns. However, the extensive travel time and the need for multiple ferry crossings make this less practical for most travelers coming from distant parts of the Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, making it perfect for island hopping tours, exploring the Underground River, and enjoying the beaches. The weather is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can also lead to tour cancellations or disruptions due to weather conditions. If you plan to visit during this time, it's advisable to remain flexible with your itinerary and always check weather forecasts. The shoulder months of November and May often offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without savoring fresh seafood. Given its coastal location, the city offers an abundance of grilled fish, prawns, squid, and shellfish. Look for restaurants that serve "Kinilaw," a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing and flavorful dish that highlights the freshness of the catch.

Another local specialty to try is "Tamilok," a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees. While it might sound unusual, it's considered a delicacy by many. It's typically eaten raw, dipped in vinegar, and has a briny, slightly sweet taste. For the adventurous eater, this is a unique Palawan experience. Ka Lui Restaurant, mentioned earlier, is a great place to sample some of these local flavors in a unique setting.

Chicken Inasal, a popular grilled chicken dish marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, is also widely available and loved by Filipinos. The smoky flavor and tender meat make it a satisfying meal. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and restaurants throughout Puerto Princesa. Don't forget to try "La Paz Batchoy," a hearty noodle soup with pork and vegetables, perfect for a comforting meal.

For those with a sweet tooth, try local delicacies like "Ube Halaya" or "Buko Pie" made with fresh coconut. Many local bakeries and pasalubong centers offer these treats. Exploring the local markets can also lead you to discover other unique snacks and delicacies that are popular among residents. Trying these dishes offers a deeper connection to the local culture and culinary traditions.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. A friendly greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas. It's also common to remove your footwear before entering someone's home.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but it's always wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact number for Balay Inato Pension readily available.

For communication and navigation, ensure you have a reliable mobile signal. Consider downloading apps like Google Maps for navigation, Grab for transportation if available in the city, and a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may speak different dialects. Having a local SIM card can also be beneficial for staying connected and accessing data services.

When engaging in tours, especially island hopping or visiting natural attractions like the Underground River, always book with reputable operators. This ensures your safety and helps support legitimate tourism businesses. Familiarize yourself with the local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP), and carry some cash for smaller purchases and local transport, as not all establishments accept cards.

Stayed here for one night before flying the following day. The location of the property was great, and the layout just back from the road was really nice. The room itself was bigger than I expected. There was a fairly big gap underneath the door and by the time we were going to sleep I noticed ants all over the floor, a group on the wall by the ac, a group underneath our table. It made me feel very uncomfortable. The light coming in through the thin curtains also didn’t help. Free breakfast was available and there was a transfer to the airport which was good.

Friendly and helpful staff. Our room was clean and beds were comfy. It was nice to call it our home while we were there. The food at the restaurant was superb!! My only suggestion is for the water heater in the barhroom, we didn't have to use it this time but for our next visit, we intend to bring our Canadian relatives who would need hot water to shower. Overall, we loved our stay and would recommend this amazing bed and breakfast hotel. :)

Didn't start well, left waiting for an hour for our promised transfer bus. We seemed to be the only ones who's accomodation hadn't picked them up. Made our own way, no apology. Not very good English. Not always some one on the desk. We had booked a tour and minibus on to El Nido, this hadn't been done also. Took forever for them to get back to us and confirm (it was after 10) because the bar shut, here isn't much around the local area either. So early night. Room and the general property are abosulutely fine. I left my selfie stick on the tour bus the following day. I have emailed twice and not had a response.

I got there very late and left pretty early so I wasn’t there very long. The room was clean, bed okay, shower good. There was no Wi-Fi in the room at all and it stated there was. They told me that when I checked in. Also the breakfast was pretty bad. A piece of very over cooked fish to which you could get two bites out of, I swear if they had a gold fish bowl I would have sworn that’s where it came from and some white rice and a very greasy egg. They did provide a ride to the airport in an actual car instead of a tricycle so not a bad place just room for improvement.

Couldn't be happier with our stay here, next door to some amazing places to eat, 5 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes walk into city centre, breakfast was served in the restaurant opposite, was super tasty and we ate in there a couple of nights too, staff couldn't have been more helpful. Rooms are basic but clean, there is a water cooler at reception for you to fill up your own bottle. Wifi could be better but it's the same everywhere in the Philippines.

It’s next to a pretty decent restaurant. The room and the beds in particular were really bad. Even though I had already paid for the room I left and went to another place. The exterior of the property is decently kept. The rooms have no business being on any website!!!!!
