Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major cities like Cebu or Davao, flying is the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Puerto Princesa. Several airlines operate regular flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on your point of origin. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance or during promotional periods. To secure the best deals, it's recommended to book flight tickets through platforms like Traveloka.

While less common for long distances, bus travel is an option for those coming from other parts of Palawan or who prefer a more overland journey. This can be a significantly longer trip, often spanning many hours, and may involve ferry transfers depending on your starting point. Bus terminals in Puerto Princesa serve various routes, connecting the city to towns across the island. Fares are generally more affordable than flights, making it a choice for the extremely budget-conscious or those with ample time.

Driving to Puerto Princesa is possible for those embarking on an extensive road trip through Palawan. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects various parts of the island, and while scenic, it requires significant planning and time. This option is best suited for adventurers who want to explore Palawan at their own pace and have the flexibility to stop at various points of interest along the way. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition and you have necessary navigation tools.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it ideal for island hopping, beach activities, and exploring the Underground River. The weather is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C, perfect for outdoor adventures.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period can bring occasional rainfall, it doesn't typically mean continuous downpours. Showers are often short and heavy, followed by sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back experience with fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. However, it's advisable to check weather forecasts regularly, as heavy rains can sometimes affect tour operations, particularly boat trips and island hopping.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or February. These periods often provide excellent weather conditions without the peak season crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Puerto Princesa offers its unique charm and attractions year-round, ensuring a memorable trip for every Filipino traveler.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Princesa, indulging in the local cuisine is a highlight for any Filipino traveler. One dish you absolutely must try is fresh seafood, prepared in various ways. Given Palawan's abundant marine life, expect succulent grilled fish, buttery garlic shrimp, and flavorful kinilaw (Filipino ceviche). Many restaurants, especially those near the coast or in the city center, offer daily catches prepared to perfection. Don't miss the chance to sample these ocean treasures.

Another local specialty to seek out is Tamilok, a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, often served fresh or lightly fried. While its appearance might be unusual, its taste is surprisingly briny and unique, often described as similar to oysters. It's a true Palawan delicacy that adventurous eaters will appreciate. You can often find this at local eateries or during food tours that highlight regional specialties.

For a taste of something sweet and refreshing, try the Lato, a type of seaweed salad that is crisp, salty, and often served with a simple vinaigrette or soy sauce. It’s a light and healthy appetizer that complements the richer flavors of other dishes. Many local markets and restaurants offer this as a side dish or appetizer, providing a refreshing break for your palate.

Finally, no trip to the Philippines is complete without enjoying some classic Filipino comfort food. In Puerto Princesa, you can find excellent versions of Adobo, Sinigang, and grilled pork belly (Liempo). These familiar dishes, prepared with local ingredients and a touch of Palawan flair, offer a comforting taste of home while you're away. Exploring the local eateries and carinderias will lead you to these delicious staples.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino travelers visiting Puerto Princesa will find the local culture warm and welcoming. The people of Palawan are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. It's customary to be polite and respectful, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with elders. Learning a few basic Tagalog or Cuyonon phrases can go a long way in fostering positive interactions. Always greet people with a smile and be mindful of local customs.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It’s advisable to use reputable transportation services and to be cautious when walking alone in unfamiliar areas after dark. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and Adventist Hospital Palawan is a key medical facility nearby.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. For communication, ensure you have messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. If you plan on booking tours or activities on the go, the Traveloka app is extremely useful for finding and booking attractions and accommodations. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

Understanding local transportation options is also key. Tricycles are the primary mode of transport within the city, and it's good practice to agree on the fare before starting your journey. Beautiful place that is very clean and well run. Staff is kind, plenty of shared bathrooms and showers, and clear rules to follow. The only downsides are the noice from outside (roosters, motorbikes, etc) which the owners cannot control—I suggest you bring earplugs. Also, mosquitoes when you’re in the kitchen or dining room since those are exposed to outside.
